Berwick 2016

Recommended Posts

Right whose first one everyone's team sheet?

I was very worried that I would never be able to ask that question again!

Mellgren. If he had an injury free run I think he could be another TJ. It has been said about him for a couple of seasons now but he is still young and a very capable rider when on form. He has been exceptionally quick around Berwick, worst case scenario I would expect him to keep his average, on form I could see him adding 2 points to it.

First things first, excellent news and my Saturday nights are sorted for 2016. I hope the promotion, fans and riders (they need to get involved too) make a big effort next year to really promote the sport and get the club back on a healthy footing and bring in new / lapsed fans.

As for riders, no point in guessing until the AGM sets the points limit / make up of teams. Here's my verdict on riders for what it's worth:-

Ben Barker: if the club can afford him I'd have him back. Probably on a false average and would be interesting to see what he could achieve given an injury-free run.

Kevin Doolan: have him back in a heartbeat. Gave a captain's performance all through 2015.

TJ: again I'd have him back. At times he was a hero this year, but not a Berwick asset, so who knows.

Anders Mellgren: from the short time he was with Berwick you saw flashes of what he could do. Probably one of Berwick's best gaters (not much contest there) and again could be on a false average.

Coty: If rules allow, I'd like to see him at reserve next year. Will improve with decent equipment and now he's seeing everywhere for the second time.

Liam: I always like to see local riders in the team. Again, let's see what he can do now he's back from injury.

Others: Theo Pijper? Either of the Worralls? all seem to go round Berwick.

But we're back, that's the main thing. March 2016 just got that little bit closer!

Obviously its great we have speedway to look forward to and I take my hat off to those who have stepped forward with an investment that allows speedway to continue. I hope for the betterment of Berwick Speedway the club and it supporters club sit down and thrash out whatever differences they seem to have last season, as it did no good to either party and IMO they need each-other if the club is to survive and flourish into the future. IMO we don't need a VIP club especially when there is already a popular, well run supporters club run by people who bend over back wards to help the club. Obviously there is two sides to every story, but surely that should be put behind and confined to history.

Spot on 2 sides to every story the Bbsc didn't have a problem when it was announced that the 50/50 draw would be run by the promotion, however the VIP CLUB was the proverbial kick in the balls basically thanks for everything now buggar off. Who knows what 2016 will bring, in a perfect world we will all be singing from the same hymn book let's wait and see.

Like I say the club needs its supporters club every bit as much as the supporters club needs the speedway club, working separately is no good, the supporters club can still be independent of the club yet still work hand in hand.

It hasn't taken long for the good news to be diluted by vague hints of unrest.

Look, speedway seems set to continue, with the local community(not just the die-hard, set in their ways fans) having clearly convinced the current promotion to declare hope and interest in going forward.

More than a few people have said they felt last season was flat and lacking enthusiasm. Now is the time to regenerate the old enthusiasm, which in many ways is much more than caring who is wearing the colours. Real fans cheer the jersey, not who is wearing it!

It is necessary for every sector of the club to focus on ensuring it runs to a stable financial structure, and if that means the supporters club helping to pay some of the speedway's bills, that would be surely help bond them back together and offer a happier, healthier way forward.

Lots of good ways to promote the sport. I approached Perrymans buses last year and for roughly £100 per month you can advertise on the back of one of there buses which would be a good idea especially in summer months when holiday camps are busier.Maybe a flier in each copy of the Berwick Advertiser nearer the start of the season with say £10 admission to that meeting on production of the flier. Listening to supporters talking there are lots of good ideas mentioned maybe needs the promotion to hold an open night where these things can be put across.
