Why Was Wembley Better Than Cardiff?.

Recommended Posts

cardiff's social scene it literally outside of the stadium, hence all the speedway fans are together, that wouldn't be the case at Wembley there is nothing around the stadium

the hotels might not increase but i wouldn't want to stay in wembley its not a nice area and if you're staying in the center of london hotels are not cheap

the flights i'll give you but most budget airlines go into stanstead or lute, miles from Wembley

And that's why the Olympic Stadium would work... it would retain the 'party' atmosphere of Cardiff, while it would have the prestige and national media coverage of having a Speedway Grand Prix in London.

I 100% agree with you on that one

Forget Wembley.

Go for the Olympic Stadium.

Bars, restaurants and hotels all within a few hundred yards.

A permanent running track on which a speedway track could be laid.

Brilliant public transport (I went to the Anniversary Games a few weeks ago, and it's amazing how quick and easy it is to get back onto the Central Line).

50,000 fans inside THAT stadium would make the national press sit up and take notice.

Has it got a roof.

Has it got a roof.

A partial roof (it's been reconfigured since the Olympics). Wouldn't cover the track down the straights, but decent covers would do the job.

In any case, having a roof didn't help Gelsenkirchen in 2008, Warsaw in 2015, and very nearly Cardiff in 2013.

It's surely easier to prepare a decent track in an open stadium. There's been more problems with GPs in roofed stadiums than open stadiums, where moisture is a major problem which has never been completely fixed. The Cardiff track in 2015 still left much to be desired.

Cardiff is a good day out, but the actual meeting itself is often poor.

NO but it had a track.

That it did Philip, that it did and I'm sure you enjoyed the on-track action as much as I.

BUT there is a whole lot more to do, more bars, restaurants and hotels within half a mile of the Millennium than Wembley Stadium.

Rather a silly answer unless you are disabled or perhaps you never eat out unless it is within half a mile of your house

Wembley Park underground is just two stops to get to the London West End.

I am sure that all of the people at the Cardiff GP don't stay in Hotels within a half a mile of the stadium but I stand to be corrected if that is the case.

Whilst I'm sure enquiries have been made about Wembley Stadium, would have thought the Olympic Stadium would be a far more realistic option, especially given IMG's attempts to get the management rights.

London would be a far better location than Cardiff, roof issues aside. I've got nothing against Cardiff which has its charms, but it's a relatively inaccessible and grossly overpriced city for a GP, although I suppose not when compared to the likes of Krsko, Daugavpils and Malilla.

I suppose next it'll be claimed the Danish GP has been moved to Horsens because there's nothing to do in Copenhagen, although I think it was down to the expense of the bridge wasn't it? ;)

YOU really don't get it do you? Do you go to Cardiff? Thousands of fans arriving and spending all day in and around the stadium with plenty to do, drink and eat creating a fantastic atmosphere. How would that work around Wembley if everyone got on a tube and disappeared into the London metropolis?

If Humphrey thinks London is cheaper than Cardiff he probably hasn't been there lately.

Fair point, yep London prices are high, but a trip in to the city & you are spoilt with michelin star restaurants!

How many speedway fans can afford them?

Niamh

Got to say though having just got back from a trip to London that the amount of eateries in London has exploded over the past decade and there is something for every pocket on practically every corner.Amazing how they can all survive, but you won't starve in London. My partner even asked if people still cook/eat at home.......

NOT relevant to the forum Philip, but when you go to Stockholm in September, go to Gastrologik in the City. One michelin star & rising, better than Noma Copenhagen! Young team, very good young sommelier. If the GP turns out to be more memorable than a visit to Gastrologik, it will be the best GP ever!!!
