Why Was Wembley Better Than Cardiff?.

Recommended Posts

Well to be honest we are sick and fed up of Cardiff hotels hiking up costs...this year by some 60% in some cases...The Marriott want £265 a night....with a 2 night minimum..... at least Dick Turpin had a mask !!

So this year we are trying a fabulous 4 star (real real quality) Hotel Bristol in Bristol right on the harbour with all its bars, restuarants etc...and a huge NCP car park next door.

Then we coach people in to Cardiff centre at 2.00pm...add the Somerset meeting on friday...2 nights hotel....all for £179 which is heaps less than 1 night at Cardiff (which you can't get !!)

Maybe it will work..but I personally am fed up to my **se begging for rooms and IMO being overcharged...one day they (Cardiff hotels) will realise Speedway people are not prepared to pay Rugby match rates.

You will have a good time in Bristol

Bristol is an amazing city...once had a very good speedway team in a pretty fair stadium. maybe will again one day, who knows.

However, staying in Bristol and coaching it to Cardiff sounds a good idea, but not as good as staying in Romford and getting the c2C to Stratford

But clearly they are. Otherwise the hotels would be empty on gp week, and they would drop their prices the next year, or closer to the event.

Why would u think it ok to raise prices for rugby and not speedway? I remember having to pay about 120 qiid for a b&b when I went to watch the all blacks around 13 years ago.

I absolutely love the whole weekend of the SGP in Cardiff.

But I also happen to live within about 5 miles of Wembley, in London.

And know so well, what the Capital has to offer

It's just a bit stupid for people who should know better to damn London just to bolster Cardiff.

It does not need it.

And it just makes the poster look daft.

YOU really don't get it do you? Do you go to Cardiff? Thousands of fans arriving and spending all day in and around the stadium with plenty to do, drink and eat creating a fantastic atmosphere. How would that work around Wembley if everyone got on a tube and disappeared into the London metropolis?

If Humphrey thinks London is cheaper than Cardiff he probably hasn't been there lately.

I think that Humphrey is right

Next weekend

Premier Inns 2 night's for 2

Cardiff City Centre £206

Wembley Park £178

Then you can add on the extras to that for the Cardiff hotels which they always do on a GP weekrend

Mick you are so right say you go to London at Wembley take the missus she does not like speedway but will go with you.Take her out to a few sites have a reasonable place to lay your head a few nice days at the Capital.Cardiff is overated generally poor racing, bloody expensive and i have been a few times it is not a touch on Wembley. It is great to meet up with a few mates but if you have to justify the price to your partner who is not that bothered about Speedway Cardiff is a mega expensive few days TORUN is much better value and has a better track and facilities just as good.As a promoter i have always thought they would see London as a great venue, maybe for a one off meeting Cardiff is good but not that good i would love the new Belle Vue Stadium and the Olympic stadium to be considered for big meeting's in the future.

Holding the British gp in Torun is just silly.

Only joking! I would love for it to be at Wembley, it's only 20 minutes up the road for me. Won't happen though, the FA wouldn't want to risk their precious pitch getting damaged.

After all they stopped it at the old stadium for that reason.

Of course I get it. There's a stadium there that's probably being rented relatively cheaply because the WRU are desperate to hold anything to reduce their losses on the place, the Welsh government throw money at it, and 40k fans are willing to stump up outrageous prices for the privilege of staying. No-one is suggesting it's not a good concept for the organisers, and if the still fans are happy, then I suppose even better.

By contrast, Wembley would cost the organisers a fortune and there are already enough things going on in London that the local tourist board probably isn't going to pay to bring a low key event there. However, I'm sure you could create an atmosphere in the Olympic Park if the will was there, and there's much more alternative in terms of accommodation that you're not going to be held to ransom unless something like the Olympics itself is on.

BTW - I go to London very often, and Cardiff once or twice per year. The point is not whether Cardiff is cheaper 353 days of the year, but the 2 when the GP is on.

There's nothing precious about the pitch at Wembley these days. The FA are quite happy to hold concerts on it, and it's been relaid umpteen times.

I'm not sure how conducive Wembley would be for putting a track in though, as there's not enough room around the pitch. If you can't lay a track over a disused pitch at a Finnish stadium, then little hope at football's premier venue.

Olympic Stadium would be a better option.

After all they stopped it at the old stadium for that reason.

Has it ever really been prove that was the reason, given that the FA didn't actually own the old Wembley? Probably more a convenient excuse with respect to the cost of staging it there.

ALTHOUGH the FA didn't own Wembley they undoubtedly put enough pressure on the stadium to kick out speedway because it was allegedly damaging their hallowed turf. More so, apparently, that the Horse of the Year Show!

.

A slightly odd point as The Horse of the Year Show has never been held at Wembley Stadium.

Nor, actually, ever on turf.

Hallowed or otherwise.
