Robbie B
Very sad news on the lost of Geoff RIP Many condolences to his family and friends. His record of not only reaching a World Final 1953 but also finishing 3rd in the event while racing for a third tier team (Aldershot) in Great Britain will most likely never be equaled or bettered. norbold
Very sad news. But I believe Geoff Mardon was riding for Wimbledon when he came 3rd in the Final in 1953. He had qualified as second reserve two years earlier when riding for 3rd Division Aldershot. Still a record as the only rider from the 3rd tier to make it to a final but he did not come 3rd as a 3rd division rider.

customhouseregular
Not many of the old-timers left now. I don't think I ever saw him ride but obviously knew he was one of that select band of riders in the 50's. RIP

I did remember his excellent record (before I was born) but I got muddled up with the details. I still doubt anyone would will ever equal it. It just goes to prove what an excellent rider he was. A sad day for his family, freinds and speedway Edited August 7, 2015 by Robbie B

This is the reference on Wikipedia re Geoff Mardon's World Championship appearances: -- He moved to England in 1951 and joined the third division team, Aldershot. He qualified as second reserve for the 1951 World Final. The following year he transferred to the Wimbledon team. He rode in the 1953 World Final and finished in 3rd place.[2]

OveFundinFan
Another one gone. I just about remember him, he must have been towards the end of his riding career when I started going regularly as a teenager (early sixties) though Mum and Dad used to talk about him. norbold
I think Geoff Mardon retired from British speedway at the end of the 1959 season, though he carried on in New Zealand for several more years.
