Richie Worrall (the Future Of Speedway)

Recommended Posts

No idea of today's situation really but in the 90's I was told by a rider that it was relatively easy for a rider to make money riding speedway.......that was a rider who maintained his own bikes so didn't have any massive tuning costs and he definitely made more than a good living out of speedway....and to be honest there wasn't that many more meetings in Britain then than today....I really don't think it would be massively different today for a mechanically able rider to be honest.

To me, his form has declined over the last two years, he wasn't improving with Belle Vue or Ipswich and that sealed his fate for this year. I wish him well and hope that he can get back to his best form.

CAN you explane why he can't guest for Leicester on Wednesday at Lynn ( he was replacing Sam masters)??

I doubt the BV team manager favours Aussies in his choice of guests and I have never heard any BV fans say that is the case I but if it is true that is a local problem for BV to sort out, and it's not what Richie was complaining about in his SS interview . He was complaining though about the fact that Belle Vue fell over themselves to buy him and now don't give him a team place, (and this was before Mark Lemon took over as TM). I can understand his frustration with Belle Vue though. Reading between the lines of the interview it seems Richie is not altogether happy with their lack of support for his career. Personally I don't think Carswels influence at Belle Vue has been a good one, since he became involved on the promotional side.

Whatever the ins and outs of the original financial dispute between Richie and Lakeside, going to BV has not been a successful move for Richie especially when you consider how successful his replacement, Richard Lawson has been since coming into the Lakeside side as a 3 point reserve who couldn't ride small tracks.

I'm hoping Lakeside stick with Richard Lawson. He's average is 5.54 and when Richie finished on 5.53 he didn't get an EL spot.

We need to persevere with these lads especially when you think that Lawson was signed on a 4.80 average and has improved by 0.74.

Carswell has influenced things as he was instrumental in us signing Fricke whereas I think the other two would have had Richie in the side.

Lawsons was signed on 6.5 so has actually gone backwards. Odd as he had a great start to the season in the EL - yet in the PL it was the opposite, started badly but come good.

Didn't Belle Vue offer Richie a place but he dragged his feet, expecting an offer from Kings Lynn (that didn't arrive), so BV signed Stead instead?

Averages don't tell the whole story. Richard was top bonus point scorer at Lakeside this year and when you throw that into the equation his value as a team man is self evident.

However, looking at PL averages they tell a different story and maybe explain Richie's apparent lack of progress. Until this season one could say that Richard and Richie were roughly comparable riders but according to Speedway Star , the PL averages for this season only show Richard in the PL top ten averages while Richie is not even in the top twenty. It's reasonable to assume that the widening gap is ar least in part because Richard is not only doubling up in ELand PL but has also had quite a lot of guest bookings in each league while Richie has only been riding in one league with relatively few guest appearances, and probably not had enough riding to stay sharp while Richard has if anything been over riding, as well as driving himself everywhere and doing a loot of his own spanner work.

No doubt that Richie desperately needs to double up next year for more rides but at the moment I can't see who might take him unless Kings Lynn has clear out and take him back.

As for Richard he is very popular at Lakeside and his positive attitude and team spirit have been praised by Jon Cook in the programme notes but the bottom line is that the team needs to be strengthened next year so he may well be one of those who can't be fitted in especially as a d/u rider who may be missing if there are fixture clashes.

There is another side to this, Richard gets on well with team mates and management, whereas Richie ........ Lakeside need strength at the top.

You have totally missed the point of what I said. The point was that in days gone by the investment in machinery was a lot less than it is now. One bike pretty much lasting a season, now two bikes needing to be serviced every few meetings, therefore todays costs are bound to be far higher I think everybody understands that.

I don't understand the rest of your post. DIDENT...ridding....engins....sence....sick the bike in the dirt. Even Sidney would struggle with that.

Norman hunter used to service his JAPs after EVERY meeting if he had the time. He also did engine tuning for other riders occasionally. When he moved onto jawas he found them slightly more reliable allowing bigger gaps between servicing and the Weslakes could go even longer between services.

My brother in law ran one engine throughout a British season...promoters often thought that unprofessional but he spent ages after each meeting completely draining the oil from the bike and was always the last to leave the pits and that engine didn't break down and was competitive enough without spending fortunes.....so I say that's pretty professional...promoters were just impressed when a rider lined up 3 gleaming machines in the pits because it looked good !
