Grigorij Laguta

Recommended Posts

Been a big follower of Grigory Laguta since his 10-11 switch to Wlokinarz Czestochowa from Lokomotiv Daugavpils...

Always been impressed by his tenacity and style on the bike....

Thought he was at his best in the SEC Round 4 unreal last year

This season bar the challenge match at Krosno and Wroclaw (A) bikes have been slow maybe the pressure of racing for Torun? Had a a good few tape exclusions which I find infuriating. Maybe he was racing at his maximum 2 years previous had a few smashes since. Maybe a move back to Daugavpils would help?

Anyone know what is going on with him - injuries, bikes?

Come back Griscza

You are mixing him up with Martin Smolinski.

Whose form took a notable downturn once he couldn't use his switch anymore!

With regards to Greg Laguta, I've read nothing but constant hype about him and his brother, yet I've never seen anything from either of them to warrant it.

I'm not denying they've had great meetings, just that in the 20 or so times I've seen them ride they've been average..i think perhaps I'm expecting too much from them.

It depends what is average for you. Probably wouldnt be a contender in the SGP straight away but he would be in the top 8 for sure.

Hes an odd one Greg Laguta - a few times I've watched him and he's be great, a tenacious battler who fights his way from the back in great style. Other times I see him and he always seems content to sit in 3rd and do very little. How can a rider go from wild boy to gating tart?! Odd.

It's usually after they've found out that falling off a bike hurts, or they find a good woman ;-). Has he had any significant injuries of late? I won't ask about his love life.

You see, this is my point.

This kind of hype!

He's below Lindback, Vaculik, Protasiewicz and Kolodziej in the European Championships... none of whom you would say would be 'top 8' GP riders for sure.

Granted, its only 2 meetings and he may turn that around somewhat in the final 2 rounds, its just that given all the hype I've heard about him, he's been disappointing.. (as he has in the league matches I've seen from Sweden).

He did have a long time out due to injury last season which possibly has some effect but I have seen have wild boy meetings since. But certainly that injury may have had some effect.

That's a very good point regarding injuries.

Some riders can bounce back from injuries, for others it can have a big effect on their careers.

Two examples of the top of my head, Sam Ermolenko, came back from major, major leg injuries to be a better rider that he was before... whereas Joe Screen after he broke his leg was never quite the same rider again.

Please don't take that as a knock on Joe Screen, or any rider that wasn't so good after an injury!

Grigorij was injured twice last season. He sustained a foot injury prior to the season and then about halfway through the season he broke the same foot again.

It wasn't a crash though but rather he got his foot somehow stuck between the ground and the footrest.

As far as his love life is going, he is married and have two kids.

Also I disagree about him being a gating tart, he is usually a very poor gater but is very good at finding lines to pass other riders however that requires

a track with more then one line which is why his results is usually very poor at tracks where gating is everything.

This season he is top scorer in Torun. He has the 8th best average in ekstraliga, gp riders ahead of him: Woffy, Hampel, NP and Hancock. I guess you can say he is struggling in Sweden this season he only has the average of 1,857 points/heat.

Last year he had 2 injures and only rode 5 matches in the ekstraliga average: 2,5 points/heat and only started the last race of the euros which he won with 17 points.

He won bronze medal in 2013 at the European Championships.

I dont follow his results in the russian league but i can imagine that not many riders can beat him there.

Apart from the 2 European Championships round this year and some nights in the elitserien he is done really well in the last couple of years.

And his tough riding style adds to his hype:

I've no doubts in Poland and of course Russia he is a very good rider... but there have been many riders over the years who have been brilliant in Poland but not been able to replicate it at the next level.

I also don't doubt he is a good rider, he clearly has to be to have achieved what he has done and for people to think so highly of him.

I simply commented, for some reason every time I watch him, he's not that good. I must be a curse!

Dolgin's rankings, which take into account all meetings over the last two years and are arguably the most comprehensive ranking system around, still have him rated third in the world.

My own system had him towards the lower end if top 20 at the end of last season.

In reality I would say he is somewhere between those two points.
