But I do feel that perhaps riders feel invincible with an air fence around them.

Riding myself I don't believe this to be the case. It certainly gives a bit more confidence going into the corners, but not invincibility.

The Air Fence has 100% made a positive impact with the sport, but I think all riders and supporters are fully aware of their short comings.

To me the mentality and respect for fellow riders has changed through the years. Where once you would never witness a move, if it meant contact was made, now it's an everyday occurrence....

Following the Stars like I have, I can remember times when there were no injuries to riders for season after season. The team was always the same every week, and that when we rode 40 matches a year. Now the accidents and injuries come so frequent, the team changes every meeting.........

There's something wrong somewhere....

It's great when people can make up such nonsense. There was far MORE contact made in years gone by. As for injuries, they have always been part of the sport and there were NEVER times where there were no injuries to riders 'season after season'.

More importantly fantastic to hear Lewis is now breathing unaided.

I hope that photographer had complaints raised against him to his employers and speedway do the decent thing and suspend him from all uk tracks.

Photographers/paps can make massive money for sick pictures,I think it's wrong & disrespectful but some of them it's about the money.

So pleased to read lewis has made some progress over night

I didn't know this was set up,but what a great way of helping Lewis and his family at this very distressing time.I don't know if this has been put on this thread but I thought I would anyway.Lets give this as much exposure as we can.

Re photographers and film crews I think it's important to capture what they can but obviously not continue to film/photograph a stricken person. These pictures while hopefully not released into the public domain could help investigations by the SCB/ACU into why the gates opened so learning lessons and good practice to hopefully prevent further incidents.

Very pleased to hear that Lewi is making some positive progress and hopefully going in the right direction.

As others have said once he is well on the road to recovery I am sure more info about the crash, pics and what happened afterwards will come out but it seems the medical team literally did save a life on Sunday by their quick actions and skills.

Gr8Scot,

I'll be at the OTA on Tuesday and hope that there is a collection for Lewis. The people of Somerset are generous.

It seems the bands will not be ready in time for me to bring them South and the good folks at Newcastle have underestimated the demand. More have been ordered so patience will be required.

The first batch will be on sale at Newcastle on Sunday

I disagree, I think air fences as they are can be far more dangerous than the previous fences,I would feel safer with the old fences, there wasn't as many injuries as there is today.

So pleased Lewis is awake now, looking forward to hearing further progress soon.

Not sure they are more dangerous, an air bag landing has to be better than wood, concrete etc. While I can see that hitting the mesh fence may be similar to an air bag, there is still the risk of the posts holding them up. The injury to Lewis Rose {televised on SKY} is testimony to that. My real concern with air bags currently is their lifting from the ground with the bikes impact prior to the arrival of the rider. Can something not be done to remedy this situation. If the Newcastle track guru Tsunami or any others with a similar role would care to comment, I would like to know their views. The injuries to both Chris Holder and Jarek Hample were caused by this occurrence to name two of the more high profile cases.

I can't remember who but someone suggested the bags contain water, not completely filled but just the bottom bit would do as the weight would hold it down. Would that not be a good idea?
