Just Imagine…….

Social Media (albeit its often anything but social!) is one thing, obviously. That said, there are probably a few old f@rts like me that don't have/see the point of using Facebook; never check Twitter, etc. However, aren't these advertising mediums read, in the main, by people who already know that speedway (or particular clubs) still exist?

What about the old ways of promoting - something revolutionary, called 'posters'?

Hackney Speedway posters used to be everywhere in the east end of London; readily accessible to the eyes of everyone in local cafes, shops, etc.

When I lived in Essex, I lost count of the amount of people in the local couple of pubs I drank that, when mentioning Lakeside, responded "oh, is speedway still going"? I lived about 5 miles from the track.

The local papers hardly ever covered it, and promotion locally was non-existent.

As others have eluded to, some people in this game have got a bloody cheek calling themselves 'Promoters'. They truly are anything but.

I don't know how dogs manage to survive being left at home while they're owners have to go to work.:cheers:

A know, it's a bloody disgrace having to go to work and leaving your little furry friends behind, unless your a dog walker or something, you could take them with you, for free :)

Now that's a good point because I'm sure I've got this thing called 'Dog Separation Anxiety' and wonder if there is a cure for it? I blame Lucy because she sleeps at the side of my bed, sits at the front door waiting when I pack my Speedway bag for Coventry and Peterborough visits, likes to sit on the front passenger seat on the journey so she's next to me. I can't even go to the loo without her bounding up the stairs to accompany me. Bloody dog is a pain in the neck.

Yeah, some dogs are like that, ever thought about getting a bungalow ?,,, it would save the 'stairs' issue :)

Coventry have been putting heat results out over their twitter feed during most home meetings and even some away ones which is good. They've also started tweeting a build up towards the meeting with photos and asked to share the meeting preview in Facebook. It's all basically free advertising that fans like ourselves can help with by just pressing a button. Some other clubs have already been doing things like this and others now catching up. Oh and Coventry let dogs in....

I've seen 'K9' dogs at speedway, so do some allow it and some not ???

cos that's discriminating, bordering on racism :(

I went Newmarket races once and they wouldn't let the dogs in, blaming the foot and mouth carry on, so I thought, ok,,, but apparently dogs don't carry it, a dunno,,,

My take on this ….

The thing is with social media is that you can target certain groups. I have 3 pubs, i pay a guy to sort out my twitter and Facebook publicity, he set up a professional account and for a small fee ( 10€ i believe ) you can boost a post by targeting certain groups … by age, gender, whether the "like" a certain product, certain style of music etc … whereas with one bar for instance i have 700 people who like and follow it, a "boosted" post of an upcoming event can reach 5000 people ! You can also look after to see how many people "liked" or said they were going , which you can cross check with increased turnover to see if it was effective.

Everyone and their brother is online now, if you targeted….

people between 20 - 60

like motor sports

like motorcycles

live within 50 miles

etc,….

The list is endless of what kind of groups you can target and you can reach literally thousands of people for the same price as a few posters. Plus anyone who "likes" or clicks on the "will be going to" button … you immediately have their details to target in future

Im an old bugger myself and i don't understand all aspects of social media but i do know this guy who i pay is worth his weight in rocking horse sh*t. it's not just the stadiums that need to move with the times.

I was working in the finance department of a major soft drink producer recently. The sums being paid to promote their products in social media were quite eye-watering.

Formal ads are just the tip of the iceberg. Comments being made saying how wonderful products on facebook or twitter (or even forums) aren't quite as innocent or accidental as many would think. There's a lot of professional PR people out there passing their comments off as genuine.

It all works on the basis that if you get people talking about a product the sale is on its way.

I know, especially when it's a black dog.

It doesn't seem to work that stadiums don't allow dogs due to Greyhound racing because Coventry allow them but have dog racing, yet Leicester don't and only have Speedway. Well, they might do as people keep telling me they've seen dogs at Beaumont Park but trying to find out one way or the other is like trying to find out what happened to Lord Lucan. My email has been ignored so I'll stop at home ~ they've obviously got enough supporters and don''t need any more.

Just to add to the poster suggestion that I mentioned earlier.

I've just driven back from my Mother-in-Laws this afternoon. During a drive of about 2 miles, I spotted SIX (yes, I did actually count them) posters advertising a circus locally. No doubt, there will be many more in local shops.

Most circuses I have been to seem to sell out - I wonder how much they spend on social media; compared to whacking a few eye-catching posters up around the town?

Fly-posting is illegal, social media is legal.

The days have moved on since Len Silver got away with covering east London with posters.

A circus turns up for 5 days a year. Speedway is there for about 20. Not really a fair comparison.

Considering that these posters were on a boarded background and fixed to lamp posts and traffic lights, how does anyone know whether or not agreement was sought, and subsequently given, by our local council?

Given that the circus is being staged on council open-space ground, again with payment to the local council, maybe what they have done is perfectly legal?

It's a pity that since the cessation of The Speedway Mail, we appear to have a few Daily Mail readers instead.

Do you also believe in fairies and Father Christmas? I read the Mail once but the obnoxious right wing politics were so crudely put I raced back to my Independent.

Don't you think that this has been looked into professionally and with lawyers?

I'll leave you to your Beano.

To answer your first two questions, no.

Never read The Independent. As a member of TUSC, I don't read any newspaper, other than The Morning Star.

To answer your third point, dont know - nor really care.

I'd imagine there's far fewer circuses than speedway tracks, and they travel from place-to-place so any given audience would only get to see them very occasionally.

yeah, and once a year is probably enough,,, you normally see 'half price' or '2 for 1 tickets' for circuses, which is good, but then you get scanked with an overpriced crap toy, lol,,,

Be gone by the end of the season.

Would be good if charging a tenner, it increased that crowd of 500 up to 1000.

I have spoken to a few people lately who say they used to go and enjoyed going but found it became to expensive and haven't been since.

I also appreciate you know the costs of running speedway.

Oh come on be fair ~ just child's price not full. Lucy is only 5 so I'd be reluctant to pay £18 for her, especially when she just uses the time to have a good sleep. :)
