Sheffield Vs Berwick

Recommended Posts

Well, my first visit to Owlerton for a while and I've got to say I was surprised how average the 'racing' was. Maybe it was a poor Berwick side and my expectations were a little high but it was all forgettable. I used to be a regular at Owlerton but circumstances have resulted in my attendance being limited so I was looking forward to going tonight.

On the plus side, Garrity looked absolute class, Josh Bates also stood out. Berwick, Jorgensen and Doolan apart, and to some extent Fisher, were woeful.

Don't give up the day job.

Hahaha worth a punt, it was in an ideal world but I really wasn't expecting Bates to score what he did and was expecting Hall to pull his finger out on a track that he is so familiar with but that didn't happen...Oh well TJ and Kev done well, they've been brilliant all season but we're struggling at the bottom end now as well as the lack of riders at the top end of our team

the old national league is the way we should be heading British and commonwealth riders only no guests no double ups no overseas commitments

It may well be the way to go, start all over again, so to speak.

I can the "new" National League being inundated with clubs trying to join next season. It has saved the likes of Birmingham and Eastbourne. From what you hear, there are a lot of Premier League clubs struggling this season and may look to the National League as a way of surviving in the meantime. Unfortunately I don't there are just not enough riders around at that level to cope with more teams joining.

Agree, but how can the Promotions not figure out how he sport is going downhill and do something radical .Fans just get fed up of being told were whinging about nothing and just walk away IMO .

Unfortunately the sport is being mismanaged massively. Because the promoters basically make the rules up themselves, they are only interested in helping themselves, by making small adjustments like tweaking the points limit, bringing in tactical rides, scrapping bonus points for aggregate wins etc. and not taking long term views on fundamental issues like rider availability, safety, machinery costs, track preparation / covering.

I too made my first visit to Owlerton for some time and was dismayed by the amount of long gaps there are particulary after every 4 races for track grading.

I am certain that in the 60's and 70's when I watched the sport at Halifax, fans were not subjected to these tiresome delays.

The meeting lasted 2 hours and the racing lasted 15 minutes - that's 1 hour and 45 minutes of staring at the hoardings on the back straight with absolutely nothing happening.

And then we get an interval.

There is no way speedway will atract a new, young audience if this is typical of an average speedway meeting today.

Youngsters today have short attention spans with limited amounts of patience, and they live in a totally different world to those of my generation.

There is no chance whatever that they will tolerate a sporting event where for most of the time you are in the stadium there is nothing happening.

The main meeting should be run slickly, be done and dusted in an hour or so - and then we should have a second half.

Sorry to be a misery, but the future looks bleak because the sport just doesn't seem to get to grips with the modern world.

I am pretty sure that when I started watching speedway in the early 80's meetings took longer than an hour. Including the second half I suspect it was more like 2 hours.

What I do agree with, though, is that the sport should do away with intervals. Never met a fan who likes them and by all accounts riders don't either.

Good win for us tonight some decent racing.Josh was on fire again, top performance from him.I think Arthur needs somebody to show him some lines to ride he seems to be struggling at the moment but has plenty of talent.Well done to all the team.Could our new rider be Italian and in the side next week ?

Regarding Arthur, I agree. Rene Aas, who spanners for Arthur, is always telling him to move further out, but it's not happening. Perhaps someone, say Andre or Jason, could have Arthur following them round during free practice after meetings. He would then have a better chance of using the right lines.

A good Sheffield performance last night, and frankly Berwick were not that good.

Strange having a meeting against Berwick with no Shadders and Bandits 4va.

The meeting did drag on, but they did have a break for the sun early on in the meeting (seems to be fashionable these days), and I don't think it helped by the fact that both teams were using rider replacement which meant riders taking consecutive rides.

But I could not understand the need for an interval towards the very end of the meeting.

In saying that the Promotion in general this season made big improvements to the timings and presentations of meeting and last night was more of an exception to the rule.

As for the teams performances only once did Sheffield not provide the race winner which showed how dominant we were as a team.

Looking at the table after last nights result the Play Offs looking a distinct possibility, but even if we don't make it I think that we have done well considering the injures this season and where we have been with the League positions for the last three seasons.

As for Berwick I cannot see them getting into the Play Offs, injury problems and some the Bandit riders who are not quite performing to their true potential.

Playoffs looking slim now, injuries catching up with us. We got away with it for a while, but you can't do it for ever. TJ and the captain are number 3 and 4 riders having to act as number 1 and 2 these days and are giving it their all. Garcia will take time, something you don't have when you are struggling. To be effective we need one / both of the reserves to fire. That's not been the case in the last two meetings and it's been our downfall.
