semion
I thought Godrey was claiming he needed another 100 through the gate to make it pay at the start of the season, but that 100 has now become 200.

eric i
I think the standard of Premier league is higher than when Scunthorpe first moved up to the PL in 2008....... 2008 team Andy Moore Carl Wilkinson Magnus karlsson Vicktor Bergstrom Richard Hall Byron Bekker Benji Compton This team finished 10th out of 16. I think crowds have dropped to some extent due to the poor results and maybe due to the working class people of Scunthorpe having less spare cash to spend on speedway. From Scunthorpe's point of view a shake up of the leagues in 2016 might be good, with some of the bigger PL clubs going EL and some of the bigger NL teams joining the PL. Last year, I informed our fans that we needed around 100 more people through the gate a week. This year, the situation has worsened, maybe because we haven’t been successful on track. The Bank Holiday crowds have been OK, but our Friday night attendances have been very poor. We no longer need another 100 fans a week, we now need another 200". cityrebel
The club belongs in the NL just like plymouth. The likes of eastbourne and brum have survived purely because of the NL. Cut your cloth accordingly and ride out the storm, that is the only way british speedway will survive.

Yes, the point being that the attendance figures on Fridays have gone down by around a further 100. 100+100=200. All the best Rob

semion
If they need a 100 extra fans to break even thats circa £1500 loss a meeting, now thats doubled to £3k a meeting over, what, say 20 meetings thats a £60k loss in one season. eric i
Maybe Scunthorpe could put on a fund raising meeting at the end of the year invite all the past Scunthorpe riders. Surely Woffinden would find time to help Scunny through this difficult season.

TheScotsman
If Bank Holiday crowds are ok, is the problem that the race night is a Friday? Is a Saturday or Sunday an option?
OILYRAG
Promotors have to learn that 15 quid is too much for speedway , a tenner is the limit and a penny over that turns a lot of people away from the sport.
SCB
Promotors have to learn that 15 quid is too much for speedway , a tenner is the limit and a penny over that turns a lot of people away from the sport. It's not that simple sadly. Drop prices by 33% and you need to increase your crowd by the same to make up for it. Will that happen? It's a brave promoter who trys it. screm
Sadly something tells me this isn't the last press release of this kind we will see. I hope the people of Scunthorpe get themselves along to their speedway meetings from now to the end of the season, Scunthorpe Speedway is a real jewel in the crown, if for no other reason it is one of the very few tracks where riders are able to practice virtually all year round and surely that has to be worth saving. Promotors have to learn that 15 quid is too much for speedway , a tenner is the limit and a penny over that turns a lot of people away from the sport. Berwick tried that a couple of seasons ago, crowd levels were virtually unaffected, if there was an increase it was more kids who were getting in free anyway. proud panther
Think Scunthorpe is one of the best tracks in the country, & would be gutted to see it close. Why is the National League not an option Rob ?

So it seems that the people who stopped going after it went over a tenner are lost to the sport then. As soon as you tell someone who shows a slight interest in going its 15 quid 2 quid a programme and 2 quid to park at Sheffield they lose interest , 15 minutes action is not worth 20 pounds. Also the bar is a rip off , 2 pints and a coke is around 9 quid ! Edited July 7, 2015 by OILYRAG
Halifaxtiger
Half the PL and probably half the EL too. And lets not forget that in the last 12 months we've seen Birmingham and Eastbourne go from EL to NL. I must admit that in sharp contrast to the PL, I haven't heard any such noises from the EL or NL. I seem to recall when they set out in the National League with the likes of Woffy, they had amazing team and smacked everyone. Gates were good then. Maybe that is their real level, back in the National League. Not sure its their real level but it might well be an option. It would be dreadful to see it close altogether.
spin king
Lets hope that Rob Godfrey get things sorted at Scunny, the man has worked hard to bring good entertaining speedway to the city of Scunthorpe. Will Scunny get the crowds they need, is the million dollar question. I seem to recall at the start of the season that Rob was saying needed more bodies through the gates. No denying that Scunny have alot of bad luck with injuries and it is going to take mammoth task to attract more fans when the team is the wrong end of the table. Lets hope that they are succesful.
