International Day Trips For Speedway

Recommended Posts

I visited Nässjö in Sweden on Saturday afternoon for a very enjoyable Division 1 fixture. I took an early flight from Stansted to Gothenburg Landvetter and then returned back to the UK in the evening. During the season I generally do about 5 overseas trips and where I can I will take in two or three meetings per trip.

However, I would be interested in doing some more day trips and just wondered if anyone else has discovered an easy day trip where the current flight schedules fit in well.

Many thanks

Ot appears to be an interesting venture - but was it costly and what was the time factor involved?

So far as costs are concerned the flights were £44 but I have done them for £20 before now. Car Hire was £49 and the fuel cost £14. Speedway admission was £8 and the programme £2. Naturally I spent money on food etc: but no more than if I had been travelling around the UK.

It depends how one measures the time I guess. Entering Stansted airport to exiting it was just under 18 hours. I did not leave from home nor return to home straight away so I don't have a reliable door to door time!

Perhaps one of the early Polish fixtures on Sundays?

I'd imagine there would be a number of meetings in Northern Germany that people could make by flying into Hamburg,Lübeck or Berlin.Flying into Hamburg or Lübeck also means you could fairly easily reach tracks in Southern Denmark

Hi Eddie, Certainly Wanda Krakow is do-able-Ryanair Stansted to Krakow return.

Gorzow early start match would also just be ok Easy jet luton to Berlin return

Rzeszow also Ryanair Stansted to Rzeszow return-this route could also be used for Tarnow possibly.

Lodz Ryanair to Warsaw return

Rybnik Ryanair Stansted to Krakow return

Ostrow Ryanair Stansted to Wroclaw

Krosno Ryanair Stansted to Rzeszow return

Lublin Ryanair Stansted to Rzeszow return

Obviously These all would depend on start times

.

On Wednesday 22nd July Rzeszow are home to Zielona Gora in a re-arranged round 9 match start time 5pm-so over by 7pm

Ryanair Stansted 7,05 am to Rzeszow arr 10.40am back Rzeszow 10pm arr 11.35pm

If I didn`t have to work on Wednesday`s I might just fancy it !!

The other easy day trip meeting is to see Griparna who race in Nykoping - just a stones throw from Stockholm Skavsta airport which is served by Ryanair from Stansted.

Thanks Ghostie, iris and r & r.

I'll certainly check out some of those Polish trips Tim. I know what you mean about work getting in the way but I guess it's a means to an end. I look at my work as a form of Sponsorship to fund my Speedway!

All these trips are do-able if you happen to live in the South-East, but sadly I don't. I've done a few, but they've usually turned into three-dayers from my side of the UK!

  • 2 weeks later...

"Day Trips" sound a bit hectic to me.

We like to add a day or two's "tourism" into the bargain. Cheapest one this year was a trip to Daugavpils for the Lokomotiv v Polonia Bydgoszcz match (strangely enough, being about as far away from the UK as you can reasonably get). Flights from Birmingham to/from Kaunas were £55, car hire was about £20 per day, and it was a 2 hour drive from Kaunas to Daugavpils. On the way back, we took in a sightseeing day in Vilnius before flying back to Birmingham from Kaunas. Hotels ranged from £15 - £20 per night, depending on the level of comfort and location that you wanted.

Can't wait to do the trip again next year, maybe taking in Riga as the destination on the "R&R Day".

Other than that, I do enjoy my Friday to Monday jaunts to Poland, where there are both Saturday & Sunday fixtures to take in. I did the WSL / Grudziadz v Stal weekend this year, and I've done the Gorzow GP + Falubaz v Stal derby in weekends gone by. This year I'll be going to the Silver Helmet final in Pila the day after the Gorzow GP.

I did one slightly longer trip this year, when it was only £50 to fly to Szczecin if I flew on a Thursday instead of £120 to fly on a Friday. That £70 saving went on another night in an Ibis Economy hotel (£15) and it enabled me to go to Gustrow and Teterow on the Friday and Saturday, returning to Szczecin on the Saturday night, and then to drive to Zielona Gora to be in with the Stal fans, "in the cage" for the Falubaz v Stal fixture. 3 speedway meetings plus the Bergring event and a nice day of sightseeing in Szczecin made for a nice trip all in all. £60 total for the car + 2 tanks of juice for it to drink, cheap food and drink, reasonable hotels also made it very affordable.

We did a bit of Sweden last year, when we flew into Stockholm (Nykopping known as Stockholm lol) on the Thursday, and from there we hired a car and went to see Lejonen v Grippana on the Thursday night, before staying overnight in Norkopping. From there the next day we drove to the real Stockholm, to catch the ferry to Helsinki, from where we drove to Tampere for the GP. Sunday saw us reverse our course, and sail back from Helsinki to Stockholm (a ferry ride that can't be recommended highly enough) and after a touristy day in Stockholm on the Monday we went to see Inianerna v Elit Vetlanda on the Tuesday before flying home on the Wednesday. In case the thought of the costs of a whole week in Sweden / Finland sound scary, bear in mind that Aldi and Lidl are all over the place over there, selling stuff for impromptu BBQ's and picnics (also to be highly recommended at one of the many scenic picnic areas) as well as beers and soft drinks at very reasonable prices.
