Somerset And The Confederate Flag

Also, if I never heard that loathsome "You have two minutes" in an American accent again I would be delighted, what's wrong in having the two minute warning in local accents?

The riders might have problems at Glasgow

my local shop has sold 'out of date' beer,,, at full price, that's definitely wrong :(

Hope you went back for a refund, after you had drunk it then noticed the date.

It's a mystery to me why anyone in Britain would want to use any American emblem on their sports team equipment.

Surely too, Somerset was pivotal in the "rebellion" in the English Civil War in any case?

Can they count up to two in Somerset.  :D :D :P

Why other non-British items too? Blackhawks, Vikings, Maltese Cross... Even bears, lions, tigers, barracudas etc...

Then again, Christians could be offended by the use of "devils" and "saints" while other religions could be offended by "crusaders". Where does it end?

Almost certainly no black people there even from nearby Bristol, let alone the deep south of the US

Those black people probably would have no problem with it. :approve:

They might very well not have a problem with it,because as has been explained its meaning and power is lost to many in another country.Just like other than a few places in Scotland and more places in Northern Ireland, the Irish flag has no real controversy in the rest of the world. But again that is one of the reasons why its use at Somerset is questioned, because it has no real meaning.Speedway exists in its own little world and no-one really takes any notice of it.A football player can hardly fart without the world going crazy about it,but a top speedway manager can call fans names and no-one takes any notice

But I would say a major problem for speedway is that it hasn't managed to attract ethnic minorities. If it did,we might not have to speculate on how they would react and speculation is something I thought you didn't like, unless of course it suits your argument :nono::drink:

I doubt if you know many if any black people personally, but you seem to know how they would react.Normally you always state you will wait for the facts, but when it suits do like to speculate to the nth degree :icon_smile_clown::t::party:

I don't know many black people that is true. I do know some though, none of whom, as far as I know, would have a problem with the Somerset 'Rebels' Flag.

We, I thought, were discussing the Confederate Battle Flag and it's influence and significance I stated my views clearly that it should be Banned and gave my reasons as to why. You obviously haven't grasped the point that we are discussing something that has various connotations, various ways of looking at it. The only thing I have speculated on is the view of black people, granted I only know a few of them, but those I do know would probably laugh at this discussion we are having and say we were both a couple of idiots. I believe that they would be at least half right.

I leave you to speculate which one. :icon_smile_clown: :icon_smile_clown: :icon_smile_clown: :icon_smile_clown:

No chance of race riots any time soon then. That has to be a plus point surely ? Where does it end ? The rebel flag has no bad connotations over here. Any flag you dare to mention could get some white lefty dickhead upset , usually on behalf of someone who isnt offended in the slightest. That crap EU flag is a symbol of suppression in Greece , lets stop flying that. Ban it at the Ryder Cup and anywhere else. Lets all get offended about everything. It is all total bull , its up to the yanks to do as they see fit , none of our business. If you go to far down the PC route , we're all doomed.

What people outside the US often don't understand, is there are vast areas with very little practical law enforcement, and where police help can be many miles away. People need to have guns for their own protection.

There have also been a couple of events in the UK in recent times - the container ship wreck and the nationwide riots - where law and order broke down almost completely. This demonstrated that even in the most stable, prosperous nations, we're only ever one step from anarchy if people feel there will be no consequences for their actions. In these circumstances, how are people expected to protect themselves?

Surely it's easier for people with guns to riot? Would have been far more chaotic during "our" riots if people had guns freely available.

If you study most American riots, guns are not usually the weapon of choice. Thugs seem to prefer rocks and similar items which they lob at the police, and also use to break shop windows so they can start looting...
