Somerset And The Confederate Flag

Recommended Posts

OK so Somerset rebels had an emblem that may have in latter days offended a couple of people with their own agenda, but at least the emblem had some relevance to the name Rebels, now they have a dragon( sorry Wyvern) so how abut a change to the Somerset Dragons ( or Wyverns) at least the name will then have some relevance to the race jacket emblem.

Just going to put my tin hat on as I prepare for the deluge of people who disagree !

As mentioned earlier, Somerset Speedway is close to the site of the Battle of Sedgemoor, part of the Monmouth Rebellion.

This is from Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sedgemoor "Lord Grey of Warke led the rebel cavalry forward and they were engaged by the King's Regiment of Horse which alerted the rest of the royalist forces. The superior training of the regular army and their horses routed the rebel forces by outflanking them."

So the Rebels nickname is very appropriate, even if the Confederate flag isn't historically relevant..

Because of this, using a Dragon is a very strange change for me. There must be something appropriate relating to this they could use. Perhaps a silouhette of this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monmouth_Rebellion#/media/File:%27The_Morning_of_Sedgemoor%27_by_Edgar_Bundy,_Tate_Britain.JPG

Im as anti-PC as the next man but the confederate flag has very negative connotations. I could understand if the flag had pre-dated the negative connotations (so White City and Oxford) but in Somersets case the flag has no local connections, it's not "cool" any more so it's unnecessary.

If there was a genuine reason for the flag it would be PC but there's not is there? Somerset's used of the flag is all to do with the American Deep South and the rebels there. So why use it?

PC bullrubbish is making sure that next year there will be black people nominated at the Oscars. Not removing symbols that only have negative connotations and nothing positive.

Until recently and I am 57, I had no idea that the confed flag had connections with slavery, but I do now! The trouble with all this PC bullshine, is it often stirs up things that were not there. We have the situation with the statue of Cecil Rhodes, did I know he had connections with apartheid? No, but I do now! Have these revelations enriched my life? Not at all, just let's me know there are a number of people out there, willing to drag up the past and cause agro.

...or Swedish club side Indianerna 'Indians!'

There have been lawsuits or similar against teams like Indianerna, Frölunda Indians and Chicago Blackhawks (and other teams as well) for using alternate names for native Americans as nick names.

I must say I never thought of any connotations with racism until this thread blew up. The Confed flag was originally the symbol of a group of states claim for independence. It was only about 80 years later that the Ku Klux Klan tried to adopt it as their own but their power or influence is tiny in today's terms. Personally I don't see it as any different to dropping the Union Jack as the GB teams emblem because the EDF use it. It's not really a big deal one way or the other because it's only a Speedwáy club emblem but it seems to me that if people make these changes the racists have won. I suppose it's sensible for Somerset to change though. These days a tiny number of nutters either racists or PC people can cause a lot of agro that hard pressed clubs don't need, even though the average Speedwáy fan has better things to think about. A sad reflection on modern life.

The flag in question is actually not the Confederate flag. Its the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It was created to avoid any potential confusion on the battle field as the actual Confederate flag was very similar in design to the Stars & Stripes flag of the Northern armies.

Personally it doesn't bother me at all (obviously i'm not racist, I hate everybody equally  ) but its probably best to change it given the current political climate. I do think however that all this political correctness associated with minority groups is getting a bit ridiculous. Book burning next

For someone who claims to be anti-PC, you're doing a very good impression of doing exactly the opposite here.

I can't put it better than Ben Jones (Cooter) from the Dukes Of Hazzard:

That flag on top of the General Lee made a statement that the values of the rural south were the values of courage and family and good times.

Our beloved symbol is now being attacked in a wave of political correctness that is unprecedented in our nation of free speech and free expression. activists and politicians are vilifying Southern culture and our heritage as being bigoted and racist. We know that this is not the case. And we know that in Hazzard County there was never any racism.

We are not racists. We despise racism and bigotry. and we think the people who are creating this 'cultural cleansing' are the real bigots in this story.

When we say our flag stands for 'heritage, not hate' and 'pride, not prejudice', we mean it. And we believe that old saying, 'you can't know where you are going if you forget where you came from.'

I'd say someone from the Southern States has a better idea of their values than someone from South Wales. ;) Why do you want to take the heritage of these people away from them?

All the best

Here is a southern opinion as well.....

"We acknowledge that demanding the removal of these hurtful images and symbols that represent decades of hatred and oppression is only the first step in addressing the racism plaguing our country, but we must also acknowledge that symbols matter," said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.),

And in all honesty it isn't often that a racist admits to being a racist......a very recent incident,in the best possible taste

I live in the southern United States. If you are white it is a symbol of Southern heritage and something to be treasured. If you are black it is a symbol of racism and very provocative seeing it in use today. If is a very divisive symbol. Whether or not that is relevant to a speedway team in England I don't know.

The Flag has been around for a long time Alan......when did the black people of southern USA decide it was a symbol of racism? If they always have, then fair enough, but if it is a relatively recent thing, then 'someone' has jumped on some kind of band wagon.

One could also ask the question as to why the use of the flag gained popularity at roughl the same time as the black civil rights movement in the south?Coincidence?
