Do Averages Tell Us The Full Story?

Recommended Posts

They are still paid the same. Do riders really care about their averages unless specifically told about them for a specific reason.EG - get your average up, you need a work permit. Or, get your average down, we need to strengthen the side.Either way, again, it works both ways. Plusses and minuses on either side.

I don't think riders generally care about their average..not in my experience anyway...as long as they get paid the same as a win that's the the important thing to them..so you're right..it's not a big issue to riders really, and again you're right in that for a lot of riders it might be an advantage to actually stay behind their partner these days as it actually reduces their average which might be an advantage down the line to them.

I just think it's fairer to have bonus points in averages as it gives a fairer reflection of a rider to be honest, especially for work permit situations...but I'd agree to most riders it wouldn't be an issue they would even think about

I suppose the point I was trying to make when starting this topic is that in other sports, for example football and baseball, all kinds of different statistical analysis is used to examine the performance of a player, whereas in speedway it seems limited to what a rider's average is.

The "riders beat - riders beaten" ratio, detailed analysis of how a rider has earned the points he's scored in a heat and individual heat analysis are just some of the ways that I feel you could attain a rider's true worth to your team.

Get rid of the tactical rides, get rid of the ridiculas double points, the tem with the most points wins the meeting as it should be, not by a rider scoring 6 points to bring the score closer. or win the meeting. As for bonas points, yes it is a team sport and if 2 riders are out there riding as they should as a team and stopping the oppostition from getting more than 1 point, then the rider in second place should get the bonus point added to his average.

This is now why the see team speedway, being raced as an individual race, the riders go off from the tapes like rockets, they don't give 2 hoots if their team mate is behind them trying to fight off the 2 opposite riders, when he should be there to help his team mate to get the much needed second place to make sure the team win the meeting.

Far to selfish, the way they ride now, the art of team riding is almost gone and forgoten, there are very few riders who even realise that they are 2 riders who should be racing together, not for 1 rider to zoom off to the front while his poor team mate battles against the other 2 and end up scoring nothing, when they could have got a much needed 5-1 or 4-2.

So yes the bonus points should count, that is why you now see the young Aussies getting the win at all cost so they can get their visa the following year.

Lets add the points teach them how to team ride and stop all these stupid TR and Double points, because a win is a win , if a team is 10 points behind, then the team that are in front well deserve to be there,

I can't the point of being a half lap or more behind the actual racing, and doing stunts on your back wheel, like you have just crossed the line in first place. What is the point of it. If you are not prepared to come to a meeting to race and win, then just hand in your colours and find a team that wants you, that is if anyone would bother taking you on board the club. Doubt it very much.

I know what I would do with them If I managed the team,

"Do averages tell us the full story?"
A man has his feet in 2 bowls of water, the average temperature of which is 50 deg.C.
According to the average he should be pleasantly content, BUT
. . . one bowl is full of boiling water at 100 C. ,
. . . the other is full of iced water at 0 deg.C.

In reality he's in extreme pain from both feet !

Answer to the question? - You decide.

yeah,,, but after a period of time, both bowls will be at the same temperature,,, as long as they are not tampered with :-),,,

or, if the said man has wooden legs, it shouldn't make a difference anyway ;-)

Well team speedway should be about riding as a team - if necessary shepherding your partner home ahead of an opposition rider, rather than selfishly trying to win. That's why bonus points were devised, although being paid for third place is a bit farcical if there's no fourth place finisher.

The scoring system should reflect who you beat opposition wise, not team mate wise.
