The White Knight
I feel that the ref last night at Peterborough got it wrong to exclude Kurtz, i thought ther was just the minimum of contact, Kurtz had atleast three quartes of his bike past, didn't move off line. imo Speedway is starting to get like football, wher a player is afraid to make a tackle in the box, if the player goes down, its a penalty! Sorry - I don't agree - Kurtz banged in to Berge's elbow and then brought him down with his bike. Accidental perhaps - but - Kurtz had to go. Rightly so in my opinion. Also Kelvin Tatum thought the Referee got it right too.

Bigballs
Ref got it spot on Imo.Let's hope you don't become a ref he got it wrong berge was unbalanced on the bike his left leg shot back then he fell if riders go down every time they get a tap it would take all night to run a meeting that ref saved me a few quid because I had backed summers to beat Kurtz on rider match up so thank you very much REF
speedibee
Very unfair to denigrate Ms Turnbull for Monday, I didn't think she got any decision that she COULD make under the rules wrong. Monday was completely the fault of the meeting steward Paul Clarke who is the only official that can halt a Sky match and order a track inspection. That's correct we should concentrate on blaming her for EVERY other meeting she IS in charge of . same goes for Vardy and Horley . every single meeting they are in charge of has controvertial or just plain pathetic decisions . get rid of them before they damage speedway any more

Falcon Hammer
Notes from the Scunthorpe programme 02/05/77 Re: their match at Edinburgh 22/04/77 In heat one Bert Harkins clearly broke the tapes which were left strung along the safety fence. Then we discovered that there were no telephone at the starting line. A phone call to the referee Mr Jack Cuthbert after the race had finished brought forth the answer, "the tapes were not broken at all" In heat two Mal Chambers broke the tapes, the race was stopped and the red exclusion light was displayed. Shortly afterwards it was turned off and then turned on again which prompted Mr Neil MacFarlane, Edinburgh team manager, to phone the referee and persuade you should reinstate Chambers - which he did! His explanation to us was that Chambers should now not be excluded because Mr MacFarlane had explained to him that Chambers did not really intend to break them but had developed a mechanical fault with his machine In heat three Jack Millen broke the tapes which were again left dangling over the track - no exclusion and the explanation that Mr Cuthbert had no idea who broke them! Probably hardly able to believe his luck Millen again broke the tapes in the five - no exclusion and a comment from the referee that he knew best, he could see best, and a comment to stop protesting every time the tapes were broken and nobody was excluded In heat 11 Dave Baugh clearly broke the tapes - all four riders were allowed in the re-run and in view of the referees instructions to us we did not bring this to his attention In general refereeing has improved!

That is very true sidney. He was a great crowd pleaser (or crowd winder upper) depending on what Team you were supporting. ALWAYS fondly remembered at Sunderland. He gave us some great moments. barncooseboy
South west based ref Barry Richardson died a couple of weeks or so ago, a former copper in Exeter he was proud of finding new interpretations of long standing rules. A very nice man to talk to R.I.P. Barry

Then'as he got older he got more impressive!!
scaramanga
Do the speedway refs have to go through the same sort of training that a football ref doe's. from what I have seen and the issues that they seem to have no control on, makes me wonder if some of them went to their first speedway meeting a couple of weeks ago, like what they saw and decided to become a ref, got the job, spent a meeting in the box with another ref for a meeting then they where left to their own devices. Some of then have not got the slightest grasp of the rules in the sport. Are they tested on the rule book and what qualifications do they need to get to be a ref. The SCB needs to tighten up on the quality of the refs they have, because some of them are just to idiotic to belive. i wouldnt think so as football and speewday are 2 different sports and have you seen the size of some of the speedway refs they wouldnt pass the fitness test
StevePark
When was the last time anyone was at a meeting with a Trainee Ref in charge? The last one I seem to remember at Brough Park is Stuart Wilson, which must be about 10 years ago now.
