Gerhard Engine

What parts will they use in a service after a full seasons riding will it be complete rebuilt from top to bottom? will they hone the Conrod or will it be a one new valves ,springs, a new piston or just rings ? Wonder how much a service will cost because I think you would need to completely rebuild it if you were to use it for a second season how many season will they guarantee the engine after the amount of races it once you buy second hand warranty ?

Radical/Stupid idea alert...

Has three lap races ever been considered?

Most races seem over well before the last lap anyway as riders have invariably become more spaced apart the longer the race has gone, so maybe it would lead to closer racing?

What it would definitely do is save 25% 'wear and tear' on engines and chassis, 25% tyre usage and 25% fuel, and maybe tracks would be less slick at the end of the meeting...

And surely make cost savings which could be passed on in reduced admission....?

Thus maybe getting some 'newbies' to attend (who wouldn't probably know it used to be four laps anyway)..

Tin hat on time.....!

not the worst idea tbh

Warranty won't be worth the paper it's written on, escape clause will be dirt getting through the air filter, that will destroy any engine, if you saw the state of some Riders filters you would cry, mixed with methanol drawn into the engine, it's like grinding paste.

My tip would be to buy the engine using a Credit card, at least you have some protection if it goes bang.

Would be poor vfm at some tracks e.g less than 40secs per race at Plymouth.

But would all four riders still be in contention as they go into lap three most races?

If so, I would suggest the punters wouldn't even notice the race time..

20/20 cricket was thought to be a 'novelty one hit wonder', now its the most popular form of cricket worldwide..

'Fast and Furious' is the tagline often used for Speedway, 3 lap races could do that justice..

People also often complain about no second halves due to curfews and meetings taking over two hours to complete. Less laps of racing would sort this..

And vfm perception can also be influenced massively by what happens 'off track' too, (as T20 shows so well)..

Taken from an interview with Ross Brawn on changes to F1. I'm inclined to think the same applies to speedway.

"That is something we need to discuss with the teams," Brawn said. "They have made a huge investment in these engines so you can't just discard them and say: 'We are going to change the engines.'

F1 has changed it's engine regulations many times.

While Bernie was in charge yes. Brawn comes from the other side of the fence and has more of a team prospective and I have to say I agree with him.

Did you mean 'perspective'? Now that it has American owners, maybe they might adopt a few American ideas? Different engines different tyres and different brake materials, coupled with a more seat of the pants requirement for driving, might restore more of the relevance to more of the public and enable smaller or newer teams to be more competitive. The GTR would be gradually phased in and is already competitive with existing equipment, so I don't quite see the connection to Ross's statement.

Yes I did :)

Not just the technical side, they are talking about a more even distribution of funds between the teams, which I think is just as important. More social media interaction to try and attract more fans and make them feel involved with the sport is also being discussed.

If looking at a shortening of race lengths then the one idea would be 1/2 lap races because if you are honest at least 50% of races are over before the 3rd bend. And you could have 30 of them or even 50. With rev limiters fitted the increased number of starts would not lead to more wear and tear on engines. Yes you would miss out on the 3% of real races with passing that are worth watching. If not I go with the idea of one lap races and have 30 in a match. All of these with no "gardening" of course - up to the tapes and Go!

if you only have 1/2 lap races, would you not need a additional finish line and for it to be manned, or even another referee to call the finish ? This would all add to the cost of running a meeting and in the long term might not be good for speedway ;)

No need, just add a start gate and line on the back straight, give the ref some binoculars to do the starts, the finish will be on Tue old start line, so 2 refs not required....
