Swindon Robins V Coventry Bees 26th May 2015

Recommended Posts

Before they start I presume someone will get a compass out and make sure the track is the right way round to avoid the low sun? Don't need any more with problems like Leicester and Kings Lynn, not that it will bother me as I can't go to Swindon now. Good luck with the new stadium though. I suppose the jobsworth stewards will be transferring over there and the 'no dogs' policy will still be in force?

Don't know, my pooch would be petrified of the noise! Only racing dogs possibly?

Just bought the local rag and the match has taken over a quarter of the front page with action shot!!!

Howarth named as reserve for World Cup.

Do not know the reason why, but a few weeks ago the stewards were running around like demented lunatics as one spectator had bought a dog in.

Enjoyed that last night.

There was a bit of bleating a few weeks ago about the average or fair weather fan not being enticed by the advanced fiver offer. Gladly, that one has been safely put to bed. Huge crowd with plenty of families and kids about too. I think a lot of people underestimate the power of good old fashioned word of mouth to draw friends and family in. Proves that the crowds are out there...even for a match on TV AND on a Tuesday. Sky will be itching to come back if it's at all possible, maybe a two for 10/15 quid might make people rope a few extra friends and family in that haven't been before. Market it, put the word out early, make people commit. People are used to booking stuff in advanced these days, people can plan their weeks around it. It's far too easy these days to have soft plans to do something but then get distracted or just not be bothered after getting in from work if you haven't committed to it financially. Thank christ the weather played ball for a change!

Hopefully the casual and new fans saw something that they were entertained by last night. It's hard to imagine anyone didn't enjoy that last night.

First half of the meeting was slightly turgid racing wise, but luckily the score kept it very interesting. We certainly got all that we could wish for in the second half of the meeting, and the home fans went home happy. Ideal.

Think Coventry should be very disappointed not to get more than a point from that. Even before heat 13 (hope Hans is ok soon) Cov should have had a handy cushion of points with Swindon being massively outgunned at reserve and Batchelor effectively riding like a reserve (food poisoning or not he hasn't looked comfortable at Swindon at any point this season, doesn't have the fitness/confidence to go into the bends full bore like we know he can do). Luckily the rest of the team showed plenty of character to prove Crazy Robin's predictably gloomy mid-meeting prediction as total cobblers. What a great way to predict the outcomes of matches against your own team....get it right and you look like a genius. Get it wrong, at least you can enjoy (does CR do enjoyment?) a win for your team. Either way, you're a winner.

I like this team, plenty of guts and enthusiasm in it, at home at least. Will be interesting to see what happens with Adrian coming back. If he ends up losing his team place, I'd happily have North back in the fold. Ok he probably will come up short in terms of consistent point scoring ability compared to PK, but you'll at least get plenty of commitment which I think is the best we can hope for from this season and hope the middle order carry on their good form.

More nights like that at home, I don't think people would be complaining too much.

First chance I've had to watch this meeting, great entertainment and good advert for the sport.

Havvy made himself look rather foolish with his comments about refereeing decisions. 15 against them? Bet that's really harming their chances so far this year NOT.

Think it was the right call. Garrity was fully commited to the move and I would expect no different from him - love to watch him. However I think the decision by the ref was right. If you come steaming into a band and unsettle a rider then it's likely you will be the one to go.

The Bees deserved a point tho and really should have won.

With Hans out the Robins should have smelt blood and stopped the Bees getting anything from the match.

Yet to be convinced by the Robins so far this season.

Just to add I hope Hans is ok, could have been so much worse.

Forgot to mention the great crowd, pity they weren't proper speedway fans though. The give away was the huge cheer when Sargeant fell off. Shame but I'm sure the Swindon regulars would have explained that cheering when a lad falls off at 60mph could be perceived as being a bit moronic.

Being there it was barely audible. It really was a tiny minority - its one of my pet hates and had it been any more than that I'd have ranted about it. I can only assume the tiny minority were near a camera so it was picked up and sounded far worse than it was.

The Swindon fans near us were a great laugh,we have some great banter with them and it seems reading others posts on here, facebook and twitter it was the same elsewhere around the stadium.

Don't know how they managed that as we only got as far as the car park. Paid the fee and the two stewards on the gate made a fuss of the dogs but at the next checkpoint charlie we were told we couldn't stay and that there was a lay by up the road we could use. I knew the dogs would just go to sleep as they'd been running around all day but no way would I leave them out of sight. As it happened when the steward had finished escorting us out we took a wrong turn and ended up behind the stadium still in the car park so instead of going back to the Travel Lodge we did get to see the match.

Anyone that knows me and Lucy will know that she goes to sleep on her blanket. In fact on Monday the Thompson twins dad walked by and said 'How can she go to sleep with that noise?' Well, that's probably the reason why Thomas (Peterborough) and Edward (Coventry) are quite famous but Lucy isn't because she's so boring and doesn't watch the racing.

I have noticed that before about Swindon a bit over zealous and there seems to be loads of stewards compared to other tracks, why no dogs is a mystery, it is a dog track! A few years ago i took my own drink in and got told to take it out, most other tracks have this rule but dont enforce it.

They arn't cheering because the rider maybe hurt though are they? Edited by foreverblue

It was a small dog, a hairy rat type, and when they left they put it in a bag. It must of been bought in that way.

We have had dogs at the track in the past, one of them used to be next to the start line and when the bikes went past he would put his feet up on the fence and bark at the riders.

.

I have to say I tend to agree. I have always said I thought this Swindon team look top 4 and very strong but on Tursday's performance I wasn't as convinced.

Coventry had JK really struggling but still led until heat 11. The fact it then went to pot for the bees in the next 3 heats (ex heat 12, lost Hans to injury heat 13, Ex heat 14) I would have expected Swindon to really have taken advantage esp at home & extended their lead but yet bees still pulled it back to only lose by 4 on a off night for some Cov riders. I think Swindon still just have the edge over Wolves now Blackbird is injured but room for improvement as they have a good team on paper.

Yeah. Hands up on that one. I was maybe thinking about my own situation where it's difficult to know before the day whether or not I can go, but (along with good weather, good promotion and it being half term) it worked a treat and we had a good crowd.

In the end, i bought a couple of tickets the day before and took advantage of the offer myself too.

It's great, also, to actually get a good night of speedway once the crowds are in, and hopefully some will return. This was a reminder that speedway can be a great night out if done properly so well done Swindon. They even got the music right (one of my other bleats in the past!!)

Enjoyed that, best sky meeting of the season.

Great to see the ex Colts do well. When Howarth and Garrity were winning everything for Belle Vue it was Garrity who was top dog but the tables have been turned with Garrity happy to take the easy ftr rides. Howarth was always that bit cleverer though (which isn't saying much to be fair) and he's definitely now the Colt to beat, the move to pass Harris was a proper bit of speedway.

Apart from that the other big talking point was heat14. From what I've just watched Garrity just backed into North and the only reason it wasn't a bigger mess was North turned right and tried desperately to avoid a nasty burn from Garrity's tyre. Minimal contact but sometimes a rider will deliberately lay down to avoid an out of control rider so that's not the issue. Correct decision.

Forgot to mention the great crowd, pity they weren't proper speedway fans though. The give away was the huge cheer when Sargeant fell off. Shame but I'm sure the Swindon regulars would have explained that cheering when a lad falls off at 60mph could be perceived as being a bit moronic.

Once you get the larger crowds in, you will also get a more partisan home crowd and more reactions like this. I realisse at Belle Vue you only get a few die hard enthusiasts in, but maybe you'll see more of it there too next year.

I don't cheer when riders fall off, but I don't see a problem with it as long as it's not a serious accident. That's the sort of thing that gets the atmosphere going. That's "atmosphere" DAC. Don't worry. You'll hopefully have some of that next year.

Really enjoyed last nights coverage!

Good meeting, great crowd and atmosphere, close racing, close scoreline, abit of drama, and good work from the sky team. Shows what a good product speedway can be when everything comes together. Both Glasgow and Swindon have shown it can be done, so now its up to other clubs to follow suit.

Totally agree on this! Although was great to see 2000+ there last night, no way can clubs afford to offer £5 a ticket every week.

£5 x 2000 = £10,000

£17 x 800 = £13,600

Promotors just cannot take the risk of offering £5 a ticket all season and getting less money than they do now from 800 die hards every week. Sky money obviously helped last night but running a meeting at £5 a person is not sustainable.

£10 a ticket? Is that reasonable? Would those 2000 fans still come week in week out through out the season? Im not sure unfortunately.

100% the right way of going about it though is offering cheap tickets for sky meetings etc, will hopefully get people back through the turnstiles again!

Either way, we need more fans back into stadiums.

Another way to look at it is £5 x 2000 = £10000

£13 x 600 = £7800

£17 x 200 = £3400

Total £11200

Not much different when you take the age profile of the average Speedway fan into account!

Why do they bother with a victory lap...most of the crowd have gone, and the riders are just chatting or looking at their phones.

Needs to be more rapport between fans and riders.

Coventry lost because Robson, JK(useless) and Bomber(very poor) couldn't win a race, should have taken advantage of the Batch horror show, and Morra Howarth North and Zengy were excellent. 9-6 heat wins to the Rockin Robins.

Or you could argue that Swindon should be ashamed to only win by 4 against a team whos heat leaders only scored 14 points!

the fact that the named 3 riders had a poor night (esp JK scoring 0) and still only lost by 4points proves the point I made. Had they been firing as usual then it could have been embarrassing.

If me auntie had bollox she would be me uncle

IF they had R/R instead of Batch and/or Killer would have been more of a hammering
