Cradley Vs Mildenhall 13/05

Recommended Posts

The Heathens preview mentions it but just advise to fans coming to this, theres roadworks and a few roads closed around the stadium all week. From what I can see the Aldridge road is closed from Wellhead Lane to the slip road of the A34 from 7pm in the direction of Birmingham. The other road Harrier way which is the road the stadium entrance is on, although surely they are well aware of an event at the stadium and will probably work on the bit under the flyovers.

Fans that come down the A34 usually bear left onto Harrier way ( before flyover) and then take right at the lights that takes you to Perry Barr Island. If Harrier Way is open you will have to go left at lights, right onto Wellhead Lane, then right onto Aston Lane which will take you up to Perry Barr Island. Its only a slight detour and this is from 7pm onwards

Thanks for the info. :t:

With news of a rider signing being announced tonight I think we can read in to this that the club's promoters feel things are going well enough that this is a worthwhile exercise. I'm sure they'd have been nervous about how the move to Perry Barr plays out so this can only be a good thing for Cradley Heathens.

First chance I've had to watch the Heathens this season.

Mildenhall were poor although Kingston looks to be a great prospect if he could gate.

First chance to see Perks on the track but he was pretty dire. Certainly an off night.

What a long and tedious night tho. The issue with lights took 40 minutes to decide how to proceed when it was obvious all along what the common sense answer was (which naturally occurred, but why rake so long to decide).

Either the riders were incompetent or the track was a major issue with fallers galore making a rather tortuous night of rather tepid racing.

It was far from a classic and lacked the excitement of the Eastbourne and Coventry matches, the atmosphere wasn't helped by the faulty PA and the delay but I enjoyed it nonetheless (decent weather, good company - I'm easily pleased!).

Impressed with Kingston when he didn't struggle with the first and second bend, although he wasn't the only one who suffered. Tom Bacon was also impressive from reserve.

Ellis Perks was obviously still struggling with the knee injury, he looks far from comfortable on the bike compared to the meetings earlier in the season. Harris will benefit massively from moving to reserve and with Mogridge really firing and Williamson enjoying a really good spell at the moment things aren't looking too bad for the Heathens

Was reported after the meeting that the crowd was the largest so far this season which can only be a good thing, unless too many were put off by the delay I suppose

And whatever YOU want to talk about.

Sparrows eh? Still should be a good meet to EL clubs now in NL having also brought it close against Heathens :t:

There was a bit more to deciding on the alternative starting procedure than people might think. The referee Margaret Vardy gave all the riders the chance to give their preferences and was I thought, very fair with them. Some riders wanted a flag start because they thought that the bungee elastic might be difficult to see, but this was overcome by attaching four pieces of white cloth to it.

One rider rather hopefully suggested that the referee go easy on riders moving at the start "on account" (he said) that she "might not be able to see the elastic rope!" She shot that idea down in flames very firmly, stating that there was nothing wrong with her eyesight - as the rider concerned would quickly find out if he wanted to try it on!!

Ms Vardy listened to all the views but in the end she made the decision - which is how it should be. She even listened to my suggestion that we moved the four starting "boxes " to the right so that the rope wouldn't catch in anyone's front wheel!

The elastic rope was released in all of the races by The Speedway Control Bureau Manager Graham Reeve who kept his back to the riders "cycle-speedway style", and although I agree that the delayed start was an irritation, I think the alternative system worked reasonably well and was much more preferable than having a flag start.

As irritating it was having the initial delay, I think all of the riders coped well and from where I was standing (first bend, somewhere I'm not used to watching from) there appeared to be less movement at the start and most races went off first time. Well done to all given the conditions.
