mythman666
That is absolutely fair comment, the only problem with it is that you don't know what your income will be. Putting out a less expensive team might well lead to lower crowds and the whole thing turns into a downward spiral. If they were really being realistic, teams should probably budget for a 10% reduction in crowds each year, that seems to be what is happening at most places. But then that's that downward spiral again. What a genuinely well constructed post. A very fair point you make
YAMYAMBANDIT
What a genuinely well constructed post. A very fair point you make It really is a good point Al Stewart makes, but has Berwick put more bums on seats because of it's signings. It was the main statement, Barker will put bums on seats, at the moment we have the worst attendancies in a decade. I sincerely hope that if we get into winning ways the fans will return. Yeah, and if Barker doesn't put bums on seats, then you have to question if the fans are really into speedway any more.
YAMYAMBANDIT
Yeah, and if Barker doesn't put bums on seats, then you have to question if the fans are really into speedway any more. You may be closer to the truth than you think, the sport is in serious decline and not just in the UK, some of the crowds in Denmark, Sweden and Czech are frightening.

Mind the weather is biblical at the moment. On another note the attendance at saturday's Grand Prix was dire. and Tai's assesment of the track/racing being boring probably summed it up. sparkafag
What Speedway rider puts “bums on seats” at Berwick? Scott Smith was as popular as any rider on the terraces. He was basically a lunatic who could only actually get around Berwick. It sounds quite like a rider who was signed a couple of weeks ago. In recent years Berwick fans have typically been won over by riders who try like Clews, Complin etc even going as far back as a journeymen like Dean Felton. I would personally say that the current 1-7 is made up of riders who for the most part put in the effort, that, rather a winning side has typically been the answer at Berwick. The expectation of some that Berwick are going to sign marquee riders to pack out the side is absurd, it shows a complete lack of grasp of business, economics and geography. The general level of recruitment for Berwick the last few years has been far beyond the typical correlation of where it should be based on catchment area/crowds/number of local businesses. As well as all of that the fact the crowds are regressing across the country and are at their lowest at most tracks that they have been for years, often seems to be completely ignored and instead focus solely turned on what it is that Berwick, and Berwick alone are doing wrong....the problem runs far deeper than Berwick, or even just the current Berwick promotion. I ran the May Fair in Berwick for 8 years, and every year through May we spent our time bricking it just in case the weather was as bad for the last weekend in May, we were very lucky and always got away with it. The point is this amount of rain is normal for May, not unusual. I also learnt when I was a youth, never, run an out door event in June. bigeddiechek
I would say the Berwick Promotion are doing a lot more than others to try and turn things around. Considering the bad luck at the start of the season, I thought both the team and the racing on show again Newcastle was excellent. If fans want speedway to continue, they have to start getting themselves through the turnstiles.
topsoil
The problem is far bigger than the Berwick promotion or Berwick club in general, the problem is the sport and the people who run it. It is paying the price for basically treating fans (customers) very poorly over a number of years. There are far too many examples to quote of meetings called off at the last minute or without fans being informed at all. Too many meetings spoiled or even abandoned by poor track preparation. The last but one Grand Prix was a perfect example. To have an event cancelled because of the tapes not working, in the 21st century, is inexplicable. Promoters have not invested in stadia, track equipment, safety equipment or facilities in years. You only need to look at air fences. These should have been brought in years ago, but tracks waited until basically a gun was pointed at their head before they did anything. Basic track covering has still to be addressed. Meetings are held up / abandoned because of lack of medical cover. In this day and age and with the competition the sport faces against other forms of entertainment, is it really surprising that the sport is suffering when it fails to look after it's customers on such a scale?
