Oh Well Theres Always Next Season!

Recommended Posts

I am very far from 'deluded' thank you - I said 'possibly' - if it does come to pass - then I hope your 'usual incentives' work. There is no guarantee that they will and, just because Lakeside have a poor season (we have had them before) is no real reason to speculate that we will not run EL in the future.

If you think the BSPA will let the EL fold just because Lakeside may not be in it, you are somewhat deluded. The usual 'incentives' will be offered to the likes of Sheffield, Ipswich and maybe Glasgow to step up. :t:

Glasgow would be a good call seeing the new promoters allegedly have a few quid

Let's hope so. Lakeside have had a decent record in recent seasons and clearly belong in the EL. As for the EL not running without Lakeside - why not if that were to happen?

Some seem to think that the EL can't go below 8 teams, yet both the biggest leagues (Poland & Sweden) have only 7 teams in their hugely successful top teams and leagues.

I thought Sky once stipulated that for them to stay involved it needed to be at least 8 teams?

With talk of Rye House interested in join EL that could make 8. However why all the talk about Lakeside dropping out of the league when nothing has been suggested by the club.

Worry more when it has or when your stadium is planning on being made in to flats like ours 😔

It was post #20 and your post #21 that suggested the possibility of there not being an EL if Lakeside weren't in it!! I was merely putting an alternative and imo a more likely scenario.

On the other hand, Sky used to stipulate a minimum 8 team EL when they were 'sponsoring' the league. They don't sponsor it any more. The current contract is just for TV coverage so not sure that they have the same requirement.

If they do - and there is a danger of dropping below 8 teams - then that would support my earlier opinion that other clubs would be approached to join the EL.

It's all very well having incentives when you are desperate to get more teams in the EL. Teams should want to go in the EL without the incentives for the right reasons. Speedway always seems to do things in a 'coerce' sort of way rather than what is natural for the supporters/teams/sport/riders.

The Lakeside Speedway twitter tweeted to the Kent news article about positive news from the planning meeting and more news soon. Why do that if there was nothing in it? Not stirring rumours surely?!

Baring in mind the most if not all the management team reside south of the river it will be no great loss to them personally should a move to Kent be required or made out of choice if they felt the net gain would offset any loss.

Such a move would not nessesarily mean the end of speedway at the venue, but as far as Friday nights it would, ps I am aware that drift events at the circuit are extremely popular and I am given to believe a lot of these take place on Fridays so maybe that is a potential factor, but my personal opinion has always been Friday night is the worst possible night you could have for this location, call me an old git by all means but I miss the days when Arena were in the then National League, racing Saturday's at 7pm.

As a Bees supporter living in Kent, I have been to the Arena Essex and Central Park, Sittingbourne on several occasions and the Sittingbourne stadium is vastly superior - there is a grandstand for a start. There are other examples of 2 teams in one stadium - Brandon, Monmore Green and Norfolk Arena.

Thursday nights were a nightmare for me, struggling down the A13 and those awful flyovers!

Driving from Wickford to Wimbledon on a Thursday evening was no fun either. Re Friday nights...why not?. On my many "Make it a date, Friday at 8" trips to Hackney I seem to recall the crowds were good.

Interesting how these rumours start about the possible switch for Lakeside’s Elite League’s licence to Kent. Rumours normally start towards the end of the season, not at the start!

From what I’ve heard [more rumours] the Woodroffe's have increased rent for each season by a considerably amount year on year. No question they, Lakeside, are well supported in the Elite League, but I think It’s a well-known fact Stuart Douglas has put a lot of money into the Lakeside team. I did hear a few years ago it was a 5 year plan when he started promoting with Len Silver for Lakeside to basically make money and get some silver ware. Would the Lakeside crowd support in numbers Premier League Speedway? Certainly NL isn’t in the equation. What race day would they race? Can’t see Rye being happy with a Saturday night rival just a few junctions around the M25. Perhaps, as again rumours suggest Rye will go Elite-god I hope not- then they may change their race day.

With Kent supposedly being given planning permission to run from 7:30pm to 9:30pm only on a Friday it does make you wonder though. It’s also been suggested one of the swale Council’s conditions is that Friday night is for Elite League only at Central Park.

I think had Kent been given planning permission last season for 9:30 finishes, the Elite League licence at Eastbourne would have moved to Central Park this year with the NL Licence going the other way.

Certainly Central Park has better facilities but the track needs to be sorted.

If, and it’s a big if, Lakeside do move their EL licence to Kent, where does that leave the Purfleet track? There have been rumours that the Woodroffe'd want to sell up. The stocks I think take each year as it comes as they’ve been told they want to keep a stadium there but move it to the area behind the 1st/2nd bend.

Rumours, rumours, who knows what the future holds, but there is as they say “no smoke without fire”
