National Speedway Stadium Opening Tickets Now On Sale

Recommended Posts

On that site, CH, the centre of ENGLAND is claimed to be Lindley Hall farm, Leicestershire, challenging Meriden, West Midlands

Matters not, the new National Speedway Stadium is at Belle Vue, Manchester which doesnt claim to be centre of England, simply a brand new speedway stadium which will have modern facilities for riders and supporters..

I see from the Wiki article that one claimant to the centre of the UK is Dunsop Bridge in Lancashire. As this is only about 25 miles from Manchester, it would suggest Manchester is the perfect place to have the National Stadium.

I couldn't care less how central (to the Country) it is - I am just delighted that Belle Vue have taken the initiative and have invested in the new Stadium.

It took a lot of courage, in these times of austerity, for anyone in Speedway to attempt something like this, especially considering the parlous state of our Sport at present.

As Belle Vue is my Team - the new Stadium is the centre of the Country(in the Speedway sense) for me. ;):) :)

- helpfully gives latitude and longitude af all British tracks.

Central location for:

1) all UK league tracks (only counting tracks once where there are two teams): Just South of Derby (about 5 miles from the much missed Long Eaton) - nearest current track is Leicester

2) EL tracks 10 miles west of Northampton (nearest track Coventry)

3) PL tracks: 5 miles south west of Huddersfield (nearest current track Sheffield)

4) NL tracks (including second teams and double counting Birmingham): 3 miles SW of Wellingborough (nearest track Coventry)

Ipswich is in fact the most Easterly track in the UK (Glasgow West, Plymouth South and Edinburgh North are the other extremes)

Yes it officially is... Freddie Flintoff visited it on his Lord of the Fries programme as he's from Preston.......there was a plaque there from BT saying it was the centre of Great Britain.

Certain posters still claim Poole is the centre of the speedway world

For a domestic speedway venue it is OK. I think for a National Stadium, a further upvamp at Foxhall Heath would have fitted the bill - and Ipswich can also offer overnight camping faciities.

Well Belle Vue is not a National Stadium, regardless of what it may claim. The nearest track to being a national speedway stadium is Coventry, which could have and should have been the premier venue of the sport, although now sadly under threat.

Ipswich is not in any way shape or form central to anything - nor are the road links to it especially great. Neither is Belle Vue really, as whilst it might be close to theoretical geographic centre of the UK, it is not speedway wise. There are only six tracks north of Belle Vue, whilst there are eleven in the South (if you include King's Lynn and Peterborough) and eight in the Midlands.

Both Peterborough and Kings Lynn are north of Birmingham so why include them in the south.

By your reckoning there are a 20 or so tracks in the north if you include ones that are not in the north
