Tsunami
MEETING OFF. Just left the track and it is very soft, despite two hours of pumping water off. Forecast has changed again with rain extending more to teatime so meeting has been cancelled. No date arranged for replacement meeting as dates are getting scarce with our record this year of 3 meetings on and 3 meetings now rained off. Can't race tomorrow of course because Scunny have their own meeting tomorrow. See you all next week.
jackofdiamonds
Never sure where the promotion gets its forecast from, but as usual, as soon as its called off, the weather brightens. BBC forecast just about spot on, as was Elliot Hunt. Thought they could have hung on a bit longer, especially as this third call off must be crippling financially, would have left another 5 hours for track preparation. Perhaps the damage already caused by the rain meant 5 hours wouldn't have been enough? Met Office site says rain beyond 3pm until about 4pm, leaving 2 hours for track prep. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/gcybsr236#?fcTime=1427587200 Oh yes, leave it a bit longer and have to pay full stadium rent, meaning a bigger clout financially, even if you call it off later. jackofdiamonds
Maybe, worth the effort though don't you think?

Tsunami
Maybe, worth the effort though don't you think? Understand your point Keith, but a lot of thought went into the decision. As you say about rainoffs, another one early in the season is not desirable for anyone, so they are not going to make this decision at the drop of a hat. They had been taking water off for 2 hours, and the forecasts were wavering between the rain finishing either at 2.00 or 5.00. I have been monitoring the same 4 sites, and the situation was not stable. The sun was appearing later and later with very little wind, so there was not going to be a drying effect. I walked the track, and even the outside track was difficult to walk on so a lot of work would have been need if it could have been saved. It was decided by a guy who we all understand is an expert with our track, Jonny, and he said he couldn't get it on in and it was agreed by George. We knew straight away the moment the rain stopped, there would be calls that it could have been put on but believe me, it couldn't.
ruffdiamond
Maybe there should be some kind of appeal for the recent weather atrocities, and it may help the financial deficits,,, Edited May 3, 2015 by ruffdiamond
HadrianDog
Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but can someone explain to me how the promotion loses money if a meeting is called off before the stadium is opened? No tickets have changed hands other than on-line which carry forward. Do we have to pay money to Scunny for cancelling, for instance? Or is Brough charged for by W. Hill even if not used? ruffdiamond
Is the bar and restaurant/cafe run by Hill's or some other staff, so maybe they need some kind of compo, if their not required at short notice ???

Think they work for William Hill and are hired out as building staff in the same way catering staff would be supplied if you hire a venue for a function, so its possible. If a meeting is called off near the start time, amongst the cost that the home promotion incur are :- - Redundant programmes - travel costs of both teams - Stadium rent - Referees travel costs - Medical facilities In addition you might not receive the sponsors fee for the evening, if they decide not to switch to a later meeting. If you call it off well before the riders and the ref travels, you might get away with a reduced stadium rent and the cost of the unsold programmes. Hope that helps.

Sure I was at a Worky meeting a couple of years back where an insert/come cover allowed them to use an aborted matches' programme to save their costs. Cert no prob. to me if the same route was used for todays' programmes. Edited May 3, 2015 by HadrianDog

It is a good way of saving on losses, but this year the programme is reprinted with new content from George in his column, etc.

DIAMONDS
Ahhhh All of the 'track experts' casting their opinions and of course they are right you know? They have all been to the track and inspected it this morning and given a professional view and clearly the meeting should have ran... Just unacceptable, how dare the club not put the riders LIFES at risk for people's entertainment, lets all sit behind a computer screen and call them out on it .-. Sorry, I have finished my rant now Haha... If the track is not fit to race on, it's simply not fit to race on, no point in arguing over it
ruffdiamond
After seeing the rain from 7.00 am this morning (when I got up) anyone with half an ounce of common, would've been safe to assume it might be off,,,, I would've called it off last night and give the lads a lie-in ;-)

I called off the training school so that Jonny could work on the track without us being there, so the training school lads and track staff did get a lie in instead. Not exactly a sporting spectacle.
