Should Tai Woffinden Ride For Team Gb ?

Recommended Posts

Not all people have the same make up, the likes of Pederson and a few others thrive on trotting from place to place nearly every night of the week. Keeping fit must be so hard for them, getting a few hours sleep on a plane or in a van is not the same as a good nights rest in a comfy bed. It is obvious that Tai just has not got the ability, body wise to manage to get his mind in full focus after going as last year to the GP's the EL, Poland, sweden etc. Plus he was doing so much last year raising money for Ormand Strret, with his bike rides. I think he burt himself out physically and mentally. From what was said earlier this year he was on the verge of a break down. So what do you chose to do make big money in Poland and Sweden plus the GP's and sacrifice having to fly back again to compete in the EL for less money, or take the easy route and just race at tracks and the GP's.

He seems in a much better frame of mind this year. I hope he goes on to win the world tittle again this year, he is looking good this year. Only time will tell if he can stay on top it is a long way to go yet.

He may just make it back here next year if he gets the win he wants. If he does win and they put him on every newspaper and tv show, I don't think it will make one bit of difference to people coming to see speedway over here. The whole product needs a big shake up.

All the best to the team in the world cup, don't for one minute think they will get anywhere near the final. But at least it will give a few young lads who wil become the future of our British team a bite of the cherry. Hope they do well.

What do you mean, the likes of Pedersen?

He doesn't ride in the UK.

People still think it's all about the money in the UK. The reality is the schedule keeps riders away more. Many have said, including Tai and Hancock that if it was fixed night racing then they would race here. That doesn't mean we have to change to accommodate them, but it illustrates that it's the schedule moreso than the money that keeps some of the top guys away.

They'd probably cope if they knew it was 1, maybe 2 meetings every week. But some clubs go 2 or 3 weeks without a meeting, then have 2 or 3 weeks where they ride 10 times. It's madness. The fixtures should be spread out evenly. I know someone with a fixture compiler that could help fix that :D

If that is not blowing your own trumpet SCB, then I don't know what is. By the way have you had any offers for your software, or are the powers that be just to blind to be able to see that they could make you a good offer for your product or are just to damn mean. Think it may be the last one

Of course Woofinden should support his home league, in the same way that Pedersen finds time to ride in the Danish league. It is not in his own long term interest to snub the Elite League.

There is a difference between riding in the British Elite League and the top Danish League.

In the Elite league you may find yourself riding;

Belle Vue on the Monday

Poole on the Wednesday

Swindon on the Thursday

Coventry on the Friday (providing there is no GP)

The Danish League is run only on a Wednesday.

The Elite League asks for a high commitment level for little financial reward.

That is why the likes of Pedersen, Hancock, Hampel, Jonasson, Kasprzak, Jensen do bothered with the league and Jonsson who appears after starting in the league has now turned his back on riding in the league.

Look at the GP standings so far the top 4 riders all have given the Elite League a miss, the Elite league far to demanding, and until Promoters and fans alike accept that top level speedway in this country should be run on one night only the top riders in the World are more likely to give riding in the league a miss.

Did he Not ride in the Elite league when he became world champion & also was holder not at Poole in the elite league when he became world champion ? Holder chasing another world title & racing in England.

Not very successfully it appears at the moment.

Perhaps Tai has struck the right balance after all.

All you have to do is look at their relative positions in the GP Series.

Ridiculous statement!! Only 2 and a half rounds completed!!!

We shall see.

Provided there are no injuries involved I would expect Tai to finish ahead of Holder in the GPs at the end of the Season. Should he do so, then perhaps Tai's decision to miss the Elite League this year will have helped.

Holder is starting to look very fast again,it must be due to him riding in British speedway ;)

He was riding in British Speedway when he was riding slow...

However, he has started racing in Poland and Sweden regularly now so that must be a massive gain :)

I agree. Holder is showing more commitment to the Elite League than their own world champ.

And why is the league structured like that. There are not many other professional sports run on every day. What is the problem getting a more user friendly draw operating.

I don't understand this either. Poland and Sweden operate small top-flight leagues on a set race day so why not us. If every Elite meeting was on a Thursday say we might get the top riders back.

Where will the money come from to pay for these riders?

Stadium availability is also different in Poland and Sweden.

Maybe naive, but maybe gates would increase if the top boys were here.

I take your point about availability though...that is a problem.

  • 10 months later...

Should British speedway turn its back on Tai riding for Team GB after he turned his back on British speedway this year.

I would like to see him left out of the pairs, the world cup and the British final until he puts British speedway first again.

Anyone else agree or do you think he should ride ?

It seems fans are starting to change there views on tai now.

British speedway is partly in a mess due riders having the power to do what they want and to demand what they want and it needs to stop.

tai is not bigger than British speedway but he seems to think he is because of happy clappers who don't see the long term damage.

A few posters on the BSF doesn't constitute 'fans changing their views'.

However, as you've brought it up, what is it that Tai is demanding from British speedway this season that is causing the sport to be 'in a mess'.

Unless I've missed something he doesn't race in our leagues so there is no pandering to him whatsoever.
