Sports Injury Insurance?

Recommended Posts

With the recent spate of injuries in particular long term ones (Olly Allen and Simon Stead) does anyone know if riders are able to get sports injury insurance whilst they are not riding and recovering from injury. I've often wondered how they manage to make ends meet when they are not earning from speedway meetings and possibly not from other jobs they may do between meetings?

A rider pays a small premium for every race they ride in, and it is deducted from his wages. Doodson are the insurance company, and they pay out a set weekly figure for the absence, until the rider is available to ride again. I believe there is a qualifying period before the rider receives the payments. In addition, riders often take out additional personal accident insurance(Combined America ?) to take care of other fixed payments for loans, mortgages etc. The bigger the payouts, the bigger the premiums.

Thanks Tsunami. I also would it would be a special type of insurance as I would have thought the premiums would be pretty high considering the likelihood of injury! Still makes you wonder how some riders make a living ?

A friend of mine sent me this 'Link'.

https://www.caunceohara.co.uk/commercial/motor-sports

It specifically mentions Insuring of Speedway Riders.

Just for Information.

EDIT: I am sorry I can't get this 'Link' to work on the Forum. You will have to key it in if you are interested.

Used to sell accident insurance to the speedway riders, footballers, jockeys/stable lads, sportsmen of Swindon and Reading in Wiltshire and Berkshire via Combined insurance of America and also Alico(don't know if they're still going).

Small premium for such high-risk activities £42 for 6 months cover but the payouts weren't great. more surprising was the amount of riders that didn't want it! And it guaratnteed free entry at Blunsdon and Smallmead..brill!

you cannot get sports injury insurance any more . if you already had a policy as long as you dont let it lapse you can renew 'but no new policies can be bought not from American Combined or anywhere else .. gone are the days when riders could get a scratch riding in an end of season challenge and holiday the winter away on the insurance

That happened when Doodson took over the contract previously operated by George Burrows Insurance. Their analysis showed that there was a Southern based group of riders fiddling the insurance by getting injured in very late meetings in the season. As you state, that entitled them to be officially injured during the winter period, when in fact they were usually in full time employment out of season.

So it looks like they started the rot, and fellow riders don't get their top up insurance anymore.
