PETERBOROUGH Supremo Ged Rathbone hopes to start the Premier League season in style with a victory on his home turf.

The Middlesbrough-based supremo will have his shortest journey of the season to see his Readypower Panthers side take on Redcar Bears at the Media Prima Arena tomorrow (Thursday, 7.30pm).

And he will arrive with expectations of a bold showing from Panthers as they begin a busy spell of three meetings in four days. A length-of-the-country trek to Somerset follows on Friday in the Premier League Cup ahead of a first home league meeting against Rye House on Sunday.

Rathbone said: “It is an important meeting at Redcar as we need to signal our intentions in the league right from the word ‘go’.

“A poor start looks like it may well cost us the chance of qualifying for the latter stages of the League Cup and we can’t afford to have to play catch-up in the league.

“It won’t be easy by any means, but it is the sort of meeting we need to be winning if are going to lay down a challenge for the title.

“We have done well on the road so far this season and we again have to be professional and prepared. We are going there with the intention of getting a result.

“It is also a massive meeting for me on a personal level being a Middlesbrough man. I go to watch Redcar every week and I definitely want to watch my team win there.”

Panthers draft in two guests for their trip to the North-East.

Former Redcar man Richard Lawson gets the nod at number one while ex-Peterborough ace Claus Vissing slots in for Robert Lambert, who is on duty in the Elite League with King’s Lynn.

Adam Roynon is set to begin his comeback from injury tonight with a post-meeting practice at Redcar.

Roynon, who has been sidelined breaking ribs and puncturing a lung in a crash on the opening day of the 2015 season, also hopes to get in laps at Somerset tomorrow (Friday) following the club’s League Cup Southern Group clash there.

He also has a practice planned at Redcar on Saturday before having a further skid at the East of England Showground on Sunday following the visit of Rye House.

TEAMS

REDCAR: Lasse Bjerre, Jan Graversen, Rafal Konopka, Matej Kus, Ben Morley, Stuart Robson, Hugh Skidmore.

READYPOWER PANTHERS: Lewis Blackbird, Ollie Greenwood, Simon Lambert, Richard Lawson (guest), Ulrich Ostergaard, Michael Palm Toft, Claus Vissing (guest)

Panthers supremo Ged Rathbone is targeting a roaring start to the Premier League season despite a stack of availability issues.

The city team travel to Redcar tonight (7.30pm) for their league opener before entertaining Rye House at the East of England Showground on Sunday (5pm).

They also have their final Southern Group outing in the Premier League Cup at Somerset tomorrow night (Friday) although their chances of qualification to the latter stages could be over by the time they arrive at the Oaktree Arena.

A poor start – Panthers lost their first three competitive meetings - looks like costing them dear in that competition and Rathbone is anxious to avoid a similar fate in the league.

Rathbone said: “Being a Middlesbrough man, it is a very big meeting at Redcar for personal reasons. I go there to watch every week and it’s certainly a place where I want to win.

“I also think it is somewhere we should be able to get a result if we are serious about challenging for the title.

“We look like paying the price for a bad start in the League Cup and I do not want to be in a similar position in the league.

“We need a good haul of points from the Redcar and Rye House meetings to show everyone we mean business.

“The situation of having riders missing is far from ideal, but we have drafted in some excellent guests.”

Teen talent Robert Lambert misses all three meetings due to commitments with his Elite League club, King’s Lynn.

Club bosses have drafted in former Panthers man Claus Vissing to replace Lambert at Redcar and Somerset, while Somerset rider Brady Kurtz deputises in that position against Rye House.

Panthers continue to use guests to fill the number one spot with Olly Allen ruled out for the season and a search for a potential replacement so far proving unsuccessful.

Frequent guest Richard Lawson steps in at Redcar and against Rye House while the popular former Panther, Kenneth Hansen, gets the nod at Somerset.

Panthers are struggling to find a guest to replace Lewis Blackbird at Somerset when he has Elite League action with Wolverhampton. Their intended stand-in, David Bellego of Sheffield, has since been laid off with a hip injury.

Meanwhile the impressive Michael Palm Toft is prepared to extend his stay with the club if necessary.

The Danish ace was drafted in as a short-term replacement for Adam Roynon after he suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in a crash on the opening day of the season.

Roynon is set to begin his comeback in the coming days with post-meeting practice laps after all three Panthers meetings.

Panthers bosses could potentially reshuffle their pack to include both Palm Toft and Roynon in the coming weeks.

The Peterborough Panthers Speedway Supporters’ Club (PPSSC) have organised two collections for sidelined star Allen.

The first will take place at the group’s next social event - a St George-themed quiz night at the Post Office Club in Bourges Boulevard tomorrow night (Friday, 7.30pm).

And a second collection will be held during Sunday’s home fixture.

I am beginning to think there are no Redcar fans on this thread..In fact are there any Redcar fans at all to show an interest in their team?.

Getting fewer by the week - Bearstalk forum is very quiet too.

A lot of us have stopped going - would take a change of promotion to get me back on a regular basis.

No. the rules say his average should be last seasons EL average multiplied by 1.4. So about 7.5. Yet some how he's on 4.9 which is less than he averaged in the EL FFS!

They make it up as they go along, often breaking their own rules.

Not surprisingly, I have been told that 4 PL clubs have looked at Eastbourne's Bradley Wilson-Dean. He rides in the NL (as he has patriality) and under PL rules therefore comes into the PL on a 3.00.

One PL club has been told 5.00, another that it hasn't been decided yet :rolleyes::angry:

The sooner we get independent adjudication and decision making to force the BSPA to stick to their own rule book instead of interested and prejudiced parties making arbitrary rulings that are inconsistent with printed regulations the better.

I note in the local write up for tonight's match that Matej Kus is 1st reserve for the Czech GP on May 23rd...the same night the Bears are at Berwick who he rode and topped scored for last year...perfect timing yet again... :D

Redcar will get a guest for that one, anyway I like Matej will be in Prague that night to.
