Tai Woffinden`s Crash Yesterday-sunday 12th April

Recommended Posts

Scary stuff, has the yolk gone with the forks and bars, or stayed with the diamond? A well unusual off..... Bad welding possibly??

Thats what I would suspect happened, but rarely does a weld not show signs of being compromised, a small crack starting to appear then getting bigger before completely separating. It may be a freak but I suspect signs have been missed in the visual inspection of the diamond

Would it be welded at the point where it's failed? Excuse me for not using the correct technical terms but the failed seems to be where the same and engine attach at the front. That appears to be bolted together, not welded. If that nut/bolt comes apart then a structure has been broken and the weight won't be distributed correctly so will snap the top - and probably not here is has been welded but a little further down.

If you imagine the part of the frame that the fork goes through with the other two tubes welded to it, just like on a bicycle, well that weld seems to have failed and the forks have detached, with that part of the diamond still with them

But it's not snapped there. It failed at the bottom. When that failed all the structural integrity of a frame has gone. That caused the whole thing to collapse. If you take one of the cables off a suspension bridge the actual roadway will collapse but the roadway is perfectly adequate if the cables work. This is the same, the weld itself is perfectly adequate as long as the bolt holding the frame at the bottom is fine.

If you look at the picture it is the weld that has failed on the bottom right-side downtube. The engine bolt is still in place complete with the lug that it goes through. A crack on this part is not unusual. The clean break through the top tube behind the headstock gusset is though.

But if you look at this photo the downtube has gone. http://www.sportowefakty.pl/zuzel/zdjecia/galeria/7367/upadek-taia-woffindena/6-330042#photo-start

There comes a point where they can only go so far with trying to lighten the speedway bikes. As a plater welder by trade, it looks like the fault lies with the frame work tubing being so thin, that there is no integrety left in the strength. It looks like the frame was so thin that when he hit the rut, the frame just snapped in half.

If that is the case, than how many other riders are using frames, from the same manifacturer. Was it a one off frame or one off the shelf, what ever the case may be, there will be some very sorry people with egg on thier faces.

Time to think more on the saftey of the riders, than trying to cut coners by making parts for the bike that are not up to the job.

I am sure we will find out soon, what was the cause of the frame failing.

He was very lucky.
