E I Addio
Cricket has probably produced more listenable and knowledgeable commentators than any other sport. Some have already been mentioned and I would add to the list Christopher Martin-Jenkins. You didn't have to know much about cricket to enjoy their well informed commentary. Outstanding as the others were, Richie was the best of the best and set the standard for others to follow. The great thing about Richie was that he somehow pitched his commentary at a level that was interesting to avid cricket fans but also informative to those new to the sport. Only Harry Carpenter comes anywhere near the same class. A sad loss.
pugwash
Sorry to upset the wake but I found him too dreary. You know I never heard Richie Benaud laugh. Prefered TV on with sound off & TMS on radio. Don't mind the current Sky TV commentary, Bumble, Walt, Mike H, Both. HadrianDog
A true legend, a sadly missed reminder of why I failed to revise properly on my 'O' levels. He and Jim Laker were the iconic BCC commentary team. The timeless test awaits Richie.
Dietbowers
He was the best at saying nothing..he didn`t need to most of the time...pity other commentators cannot follow his lead.
Humphrey Appleby
The great thing about Richie was that he somehow pitched his commentary at a level that was interesting to avid cricket fans but also informative to those new to the sport. I think the trick is not to jabber on inanely or shout all the time, but provide explanation of the nuances of the sport. Something that speedway commentators have sadly not mastered, although the sport admittedly lends itself less to a leisurely pace.

Would have to say for some reason Cricket has more good commenters than other sports thou I guess it could be because you can have 8 or 9 nine per match ....my favourites are Lloyd and Holding thou it's not always when there talking about cricket I just find them good to listen to ...the one I hate is Mark Nicholas he just come's across as so false and ott .

Agrotron
Such a smooth soothing voice like many others say the voice of Cricket. R.I.P Ritchie
salty
And an Aussie lover.. which you don't want to hear from an Englishman. At least now Nicholas spends large chunks of his year down under, which is good news for those of us who no longer use the words "golly" and "gosh". The current Sky team aren't too bad, with Bumble, Nasser and Athers having particularly good chemistry and Mikey having the best voice on TV. Nick Knight, however, has to be the dullest commentator ever.
van wolfswinkel
Superb commentator and cricketer, up there with Johnston, McGillvray, Arlott, Trueman. Could have done with him at the World Cup final than the Star Sports rookies, terrible TV. He put his brain in gear before opening his mouth. Humphrey Appleby
You forgot Botham. :approve: Botham was a great player and undoubtedly a character, but I don't find he adds much to the commentary. It's all 'I told you so' and 'in my day', and how much wine he had to drink the night before. The weakest link amongst the regulars.
pugwash
and Mikey having the best voice on TV. What a character. In 1976 'big mouth' Tony Grieg said that he was going to make The West Indians grovel, big mistake. Mikey gave him him a real working over and cleaned bowled him three or four times. Saw him pro-ing for Rishton CC in the Lancs League. Off a short run up the batsman were hopping about like rabbits, wicketkeeper was almost stood in the gardens over the road. Prime example of an ex-player going into a new career which they are totally unsuited for.

Personally I like what Ian Botham brings to the commentating table. THAT is only my opinion of course.
Bagpuss
Not keen on Botham myself. Atherton & Gower use too much jargon. Bumble is great and Shane Warne is pretty good when he has been involved. Nasser decent too.Paul Allott is probably the most irritating of all.
