dontforgetthefueltapsbruv
Sad news. One of the best commentators from any sport let alone just cricket. Easy to forget just how good he was when playing the game too.
R87
Very sad news. I knew he had had problems with his health in recent months, but still very sad. A remarkable career and a highly polished broadcaster. Without wanting to turn into an anti-Pearson and Tatum topic, they could learn three things from Benaud: (1) commentary is not a forum for personal opinion; (2) hyperbole is a poor substitute for an articulate and accurate description of the actual events unfolding in front of you; and (3) neutrality is everything. RIP Richie

BWitcher
Very sad. Grew up listening to his commentary, cricket was never quite the same once he retired.

The White Knight
I am very saddened by this news. I have admired Richie Benaud since I first started watching and appreciating Cricket on the Television. As a very successful Australian Captain it was amazing to me how he became so loved and admired here in England, a place where he had success for Australia. Most Australian Cricket Captains are hardly known as lovable characters in this Country, but Benaud transcended that, he became an icon in the Cricket world. He was an honest Commentator with a great way with words - he could be very economical with his words too - unlike too many of today's Commentators who seem to spend a lot of time talking about irrelevancies. Once again I sadly have to reflect that yet another part of my youth has gone and, to me anyway, will be sadly missed. "Stumps". R.I.P. + Richie Benaud - you were a good'un.

He played in an era before sport became an extension of Australian nationalism, when good performances of the opposition were appreciated on both sides. Unlike most Australian sportsmen, he was also quite modest and appreciative of good cricket, something that only Warne has come close to amongst modern day Australian cricketers. screm
In an age where todays commentators never seem to stop talking Ritchie Benaud seemed to say a thousand words by using only one, a true gent and cricketing legend. RIP Ritchie

keepturningleft
'If you can't add to the pictures - keep quiet!' So said Ritchie Benaud - sadly the likes of Sam Ermolenko will never learn from these legendary commentators.
