Rye House Raiders V Mildenhall Saturday 7pm

Really looking forward to this match. Always liked Robert Branford and think he'll go well around Rye.

It'll be the same for both teams with very little competitive practice and no meetings previously ridden this year.

I do feel Mildenhall will probably be favourites. But it's a funny old sport is speedway, let's hope for a Raiders win and some entertaining racing.

Tough one to call. I think Rye have the marginally better top 4 but I rate Mildenhall's higher.

Kingston goes well at Rye and obviously Halsey did the business in the NL Riders Champs.

If pushed id say loads of shared heats, heats 13 & 15 deciding the meeting and the Raiders to register their first win.

An extract from the latest Rye House Press Release (see Premier League thread): (On Saturday) == Restart Raiders are back in the City Gearboxes National League after a two season hiatus – and also looking forward to resuming a fierce club rivalry that goes back to 1975. 40 years on, it’s once again Rye House vs Mildenhall - this time in the National Trophy.

Look out for a full match preview on the dedicated Raiders’ website atwww.ryehouseraiders.co. The start time on Saturday is 7pm sharp.

Don't know a lot of these lads, let alone seen em race, so should be an interesting evening.

Can't call the result, but I fear it'll be a long drawn out meeting with plenty of reruns.

A lot of Mildenhall supporters are heading down to Rye House tomorrow so there should be a healthy crowd and plenty of support for both sides

I'm really pleased to see the Raiders back in the National League, Rye House v Mildenhall meetings have always been a bit special right back to the seventies, whatever the league

I haven't a clue what the result will be, lots of newcomers and comeback riders on show and I tend to agree with RocketBen1 when he says the reserves will play a big part, but it will be great to see the Fen Tigers get their 40th Anniversary season underway whatever the outcome.

I am well and truly disappointed tonight. The big changes that were meant to happen clearly havnt. I Paid £1 for a piece of double sided card. Which I paid £2 yesterday to read a 24 page full colour programme advert at Eastbourne.

For anyone not in attendance tonight I've made a slight list up (not that I'll ever be going again unless things change drastically!!!!)

-Pro's-

Rye house top 4 very good ( Sam Woods picked up couple of hard earned points)

Mildenhall- Halsey okay, mountain okay, Coles okay

Reserves showing promise

- Cons-

Rye house reserves woeful

Jack Kingston appalling

No atmosphere

No presentation

Long winded

To much of a difference in stranded of the riders

Loads of falls and reruns

Whole meeting just dragged on.

Bloody hell.Cheer up.It was the 1st meeting of the season.Give the riders chance will you.Rye's reserves have hardly been riding a speedway bike, they'll only improve.Hume especially.Hunter wasn't supposed to be in the 1-7 originally.

Too much difference in the standard of riders?

The 4 reserves this was pretty much their 1st actual meeting.Ruddick has never seen the place for example.

The falls and reruns were a typical sign of 1st meeting rustiness.

You obviously went to Eastie on Sunday.Everything went perfect with the run through of the meeting.Believe me every week won't be perfect,it's near on impossible, especially at this level.

The start of the meeting did take a while but once they got going they got the meeting done in good time.

I don't take much notice of the standard in the 1st couple of meetings. Will always encounter problems.

Keep on smiling :)

Press Release from Mildenhall Speedway - Rye House Raiders 51 Mildenhall Fen Tigers 40 - Fen Tigers open season with away defeat

A somewhat rusty looking Fen Tigers septet took came away from their opening meeting at Rye House with nothing to show from a performance that had flashes of promise mixed with some bad luck plus an unfortunate head injury that saw Liam Rumsey withdrawn from the meeting.

A bizarre heat one set the tone for the evening with the heat being run three times and ending with no Fen Tiger representative. After Captain Danny Halsey was discluded, the same fate fell on race partner Rumsey, unfortunately though an innocuous looking fall turned out to be his final action of the evening as a bang on the head resulted in his withdrawal with concussion.

Heat two was much more to the visitors likely with their new reserve pairing of Luke Ruddick and Tom Bacon taking a 5-1, Ruddick taking the chequered flag to record a victory in his first National League race. With the Raiders looking much sharper from the gate they soon built a nine point lead before Bacon and Ruddick combined again in Heat 8 to reduce the deficit with a 4-2 heat win. By Heat 10 Mildenhall were eleven points in arrears and a Tactical ride was given to the promising Connor Mountain. Sadly a fall for Jack Kingston negated any chance of a heat victory as Mountain finished behind Robert Branford and the heat was drawn 4-4. Heat wins for Halsey and Mountain, with a fine pass outside Luke Priest, in heats 11 and 12 respectively showed the Fen Tigers warming to their task but they could do nothing to reduce the deficit and the Raiders ran out deserved winners by 51-40.

After the meeting Team Manager Robert Henry was in philosophical mood - he said
“Tonight certainly blew away some cobwebs and it was good for the lads to get a meeting under their belts. The track was a little tricky but it was the same for both sides and the Raiders adapted better than we did. That said there was plenty of promise shown and pointers to the future, I thought our two new reserves Tom (Bacon) and Luke (Ruddick) really got stuck in and made pleasing debuts, whilst Connor Mountain continues to improve with every meeting and is a most composed young racer. It was good to see Connor Coles back racing and he will only improve with more meetings. Liam took a bang to the head but should be fine for our cup tie with Kings Lynn next Sunday”

Scorers -
Rye House 51 - Luke Chessell 13 (5 rides), Rob Branford 12 (5), Luke Priest 9+2 (4), Kyle Hughes 8 (4), Sam Woods 6+1 (4), George Hunter 2+1 (5) and Danyon Hume 1 (4)

Mildenhall 40 - Connor Mountain 12 (5 rides incl 4 point TR), Danny Halsey 8+1 (5), Connor Coles 6+1 (4), Luke Ruddick 6+1 (6), Tom Bacon 5+1 (5), Jack Kingston 3+1 (4) and Liam Rumsey 0 (1)

Mixed feelings after this

On the Speedway front yes it was disappointing that the first two heats took an hour to complete but after that i felt it ran pretty smoothly. Eastbourne did well with their Harley's for the parade on Friday but to be fair to Craig Saul he his head and shoulders above the Eastbourne bloke whoever he is (Not Kevin Coombes). The Rye track looked pretty tricky for the first few races but the top five of Rye looked exceptional. The reserves will be better at the end of the season than they are now which surely is the whole point of the Raiders and the NL. For me they boys at the bottom end of the team are beyond any criticism.

£10 to get in two quid cheaper for the opener than Eastbourne so fair play with an expensive Monday meeting coming up but that race card for £1 was a disgrace. The Eastbourne programme is better than many from the PL and EL and actually worth a read. The bit of cardboard should have been given away with admission at Rye.

The downside for me was the car park and the state of the stadium after the rain. The potholes are beyond a joke especially when they are full of rain but the stadium at the moment doesn't encourage anyone to come back. The club say it will be mid summer before its finished but with the view of racing being severely restricted and wellies being a must to try and get on the back straight makes me wonder why they weren't less ambitious and did it bit by bit.

Anyone coming to look at Speedway for the first time on Monday won't be impressed to be paying £20 to be watching from a refuse tip

Some of the comments are pretty harsh. Ok, it took a while to get going with the first two heats taking around 40 minutes to complete, but after the riders had sorted themselves out there was some entertaining racing.

What most fail to realise is that this meeting almost didn't go ahead. The previous days truck/stunt show added to the overnight rain had left the track in a terrible state. It was decided at 10.30 that they'd work on the track to get it in a condition to race. The track was patchy, never good for riders with little or no racing experience. They did a great job in the circumstances.

Crowd was pretty decent, swelled by a good few Mildenhall fans. Must've been 250-300 at least. Considering the weather and the fact there's a double header on Monday, that's good.

Rob Branford was by far the classiest rider on show and was harshly denied a five ride maximum by a terrible decision from ref Mick Bates (ex Fen Tiger) in heat 15 where he steamed under Danny Halsey and was adjudged to have taken him down. I didn't believe there was contact.

Impressed with the two Luke's, Chessell and Priest and Kyle Hughes who didn't appear for his fourth ride, presumably due to bike problems.

Too early to judge the Raiders reserves. George Hunter, the Raiders number 8, was thrown in at the deep end due to a licence problem for Alfie Bowtell. They were always gonna struggle in their first competitive meeting. Sam Woods looked like he'd never been on a bike in heat 1, but he got quicker with each outing. The NL points limit means that a three pointer has to ride in the main body of the team, never ideal.

For Mildenhall, Danny Halsey took a while to get going, I thought he'd clean up.

Connor Mountain looks a decent prospect. Liam Rumsey had a nasty fall. Hope he's ok.

Interesting to see how these lads do on Monday on a slick track after the PL meeting.

Does anyone know why Alfie Bowtell didn't ride?
