Rye V Ipswich 21st March

Recommended Posts

From a Witches perspective looks like some positive signs and some not so. Stefan it seems still prone to falls, and Manzares has picked up where he left off last year. Poor from Tungate too.

Major plus point is obviously Cameron Heeps. take a bow son. And a point away from home so not a bad start at all.

The result was tight but the green shoots of revival are there to see at Rye.

Was expecting more from Kennett, thought King would trouble him but he'd be otherwise dominant. Early season though, he'll win more races than he doesn't at home this year.

Aspegren impressed after his first race duck. His bend 1/2 cut back in heat 10 was fantastic. More of the same and he'll soon be a Rye favourite.

Early signs from Jakobsen are very good. He can gate for one. Had pace out front and once he gets to grips with the track he should do even better at home.

For the Witches Heeps looked very good. Nielsen would have won them the match had his machinery been more reliable.

Well Barbara Horley, what a joke, never know a ref to change their mind before, but she did. How she got a job as a speedway ref defies belief.

Cameron heeps, bloody brilliant, king, very good, Stefan, needs to sort his bikes out, gino, disappointing tonight, rohan, very disappointing, covatti, fast in front and tries hard when not, take not rohan, team manager, dear oh dear. Funniest thing, watching the team manager trying to put a helmet cover on nico

Very pleased with the result. Many Ipswich supporters were expecting an away win I'm sure.

Liked the look of the new guys. Nikolaj will be a star, Robin was super quick out of the gate.

Disappointed with Luke's performance and Anders looked slow in his first few rides.

I'd have taken that result before the start.

I fear our reserve pairing may be a weak link!

Some you win some you lose. Early days and there are more important matches than this (hopefully!) at the other end of the season.

Well done to the Rockets - enjoy it while you can - wink!

Agreed she continues to be absolutely awful. What on earth was she thinking about with heat 2. She then amends the result a few races later but I thought once a race result was declared it couldn't be amended during the meeting. I have seen a few exceptions to this though but never a race result being amended after subsequent races have taken place.

Pretty good meeting i thought, despite the bitter coldness! Jakobsen looks a good prospect for rye finally a 7 point rider that looks decent. Felt sorry for stefan who deserved so much more.

Look forward to making another trip to rye for more fish and chips and to see the improvements made around the stadium.

As I recall, Luke Bowen crossed the line in second place, but Babs announced him as third and awarded Ipswich a 5-1 after Kasper Lykke fell on the last bend. We assumed she'd stopped the race at the moment Lykke fell, which would've been a 5-1 to Ipswich, but apparently she hadn't. Communication problems between the refs box and the pits/start marshall was blamed, but as she was sitting next to the track announcer I find that very difficult to believe.

On the plus side, I heard reports that the Rye House fish has improved greatly.

hi Eddie, I saw heat 15 amended at Newport about 30 minutes after the last race. Video evidence was used to change the result, when the stadium was almost empty!

RYE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE:::
Rockets Rebound to Victory

Rye House 46 Ipswich 43
(League Cup; Saturday, March 21st 2015)

The new era at Rye House began in positive style, with the Restart Rockets reeling in an early six point deficit to secure an opening night 46-43 victory over highly rated Ipswich in the League Cup.

Successive 4-2s had left the Hertfordshire side stranded 12-6 at Heat 3, before separate falls by both Ipswich riders in the next race handed them an unopposed 5-0 in the re-run to set them on their way. They were in front on aggregate a single race later, and able to stretch their own advantage to as high as 33-26 (Heat 10) before finally clinching the victory with a race to spare.

2014 rider of the year Edward Kennett and fellow returnee Steve Boxall were instrumental in the success. Captain Kennett was paid for double figures (8+2) in a display typified by a daring swoop around the outside of the field to join his partner at the front and then fend off Gino Manzares in Heat 10, while Boxall finished just a paid point behind on 9.

New boy Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen also impressed in what was his maiden match in this country. The 3-time World U-21 Finalist claimed his first race victory in Heat 3, and weighed in with a solid 8 points in total to give an early indication of his undoubted potential.

The real game changer, though, was fellow Rye debutant Robin Aspegren, who hit early problems in Heat 1 but dropped only one further point thereafter for a fine 10+1. 26 on Tuesday, the Swede effectively celebrated his birthday three days early in a performance that left him grinning afterwards. “It was a great first meeting for me. I’ve not always scored that well around here before now, but I have found the right set-up right away tonight. You know, it can take four or five meetings to find the right one, but I’m confident I’m there already.

“It was also a really good result for the team. Ipswich are one of the teams that everyone is expecting to do well, but we more than matched them. So it’s a great start.

It has been a full season since was last seen in this country after last representing Berwick in 2013, with no enquiries for his services in 2014. “Nobody called last year, although I wasn’t really interested in riding over here either because of the other commitments I had in place.”

But circumstances change, as do objectives. “Then the opportunity came up because of Tyson Nelson (whose working visa application was rejected), which has given me the chance for more races every week. That’s important to me this year, because I want to take forward steps as a better rider.”

Those “forward steps” were key to the Rockets collecting all three match points in a winning start to their League Cup group. Their final three point margin could arguably have been higher, but for Aspegren’s mechanical issues at the start of Heat 1 and a second race where they felt Kasper Lykke had been impeded by the slowing Stefan Nielsen on the last bend. The Dane fell, with the Witches ultimately gaining a 4-2 result.

The Suffolk side had their own problems, too, with Nielsen in the wars and neither Witch finishing in Heat 3. A rejuvenated Cameron Heeps was a revelation for them with 15 points, with World Cup Lion Danny King (11+1) providing strong back-up. Nico Covatti was more hit-and-miss after road traffic meant a late arrival at the stadium, but his two race wins helped nab the match point they secured by losing by less than 7 points.

The night, though, ultimately belonged to the Restart Rockets, and especially new star Robin Aspegren. The next two stops will be at Ipswich (Thursday the 26th) for a quick-fire return fixture and Peterborough (Friday) before the action switches back to Hoddesdon for the next home match against Somerset (Saturday the 28th).

Rye House scorers:

Robin Aspegren 10+1 (5 rides), Steve Boxall 9 (4), Edward Kennett 8+2 (5), Nikolaj Busk Jakobsen 8 (4), Kasper Lykke 4+1 (4), Anders Mellgren 4, Luke Bowen 3+1 (4)

Ipswich scorers:

Cameron Heeps 15 (6 rides), Danny King 11+1 (5), Nico Covatti 6 (5), Stefan Nielsen 5 (6), Rohan Tungate 4 (4), Gino Manzares 2 (4), Ritchie Hawkins R/R

Match Points: Rye House 3 Ipswich 1
