customhouseregular
What a fantastic site and a must-visit one for all old Heathens. Can someone find something as good for West Ham?.

BOBBATH
Thanx for posting about this site-really enjoyed it and it brought back some great memories-good old Cradley-I must say I thought their best uniform was the old green and white with CH on it-much more calearly defined than the ones that replaced it which I thought were too busy
salty
Thanks for the link - lovely memories. I agree with you Bobbath, loved the old CH.
OveFundinFan
Yup, I enjoyed that. Amazing how wide the handlebars were in those days compared to now. And the riding style too
britmet
I was with George Major in '71 when he finally got a Jawa, one of the last to switch. He fitted it with the cow-horns from his JAP, and from being the Brummies top scorer he struggled with it for several mtgs. When we re-fitted the straighter bars that came with the Jawa he was back to his old form! In this age of multi-guests and doubling up, perhaps someone ought to explain to today's younger speedway followers what being 'cup-tied' meant, (v/v the note on the signing of Stan Stevens in '61.) And would they believe it? .
BOBBATH
Was interested to see the photo of Stan Stevens on the Heathens site-to be honest I'd forgotten he was a CH rider for a time-guess he joined them after Rayleigh. Stan always struck me as a true gent, and a super nice guy, friendly and unassuming to everyone. To me Stan epitomised what was great about speedway- he was interviewed on the TV segment about the closing of West Ham(you can see it on youtube), along with other riders and supporters, and again what a down to earth nice guy. I still get a chuckle when I think of the famous occasion he beat Barry Briggs in a race at WH
customhouseregular
I was there that night and remember it well. Riders like Stan were the stalwarts of speedway...every team needs a Stan Stevens in my opinion.
customhouseregular
I have just revisited this site and bringing back memories. I was at the Internationale in 1965 and remember Ivor's bad crash well. Tommy Sweetman was one of the first riders I ever saw in action...at Rye House, along with Mike Broadbank, Geoff Mudge, Clive Hitch, the McGillivrays amongst others. Is the football manager Dave Hockaday related to Eric Hockaday?. I only visited Cradley once, in 1967 but I do remember the day...one of many trips with Lacey's coaches of East Ham. Those were the days!.
