jackofdiamonds
Just picked up a 2001 Glasgow programme. With it was a facsimile of an Ashfield v Hanley programme of 31 July 1951. There was a piece in the supporters club column :- "Gramophone records of the first Speedway International held at White City this season are on sale, price 11/-. The commentary was made by Johnny Kelly, and gives a heat to heat description of the races". I assume these would be 78rpm records and easily breakable. Has any seen any of these kind of records, or indeed has one. They seem expensive for the day, as the most expensive entrance charge was 3/- for the enclosure (4/1 for reserved seats).

I remember when I bought my first Record. The Rock Island Line - Decca Records - Lonnie Donegan - 6/4d if I remember correctly. Lonnie produced most of his Records through Pye Nixa. Happy days - I have all of Lonnie's songs on CD now - it isn't the same though.
Guest
West Ham's Canadian star Eric Chitty made several recordings which proved to be 'reasonable sellers."
Guest
Besides Eric Chitty, the West Ham 'record recording artist', didn't his team mate Howdy Byford also make a record?
norbold
Another former Hammer, Reg Luckhurst made a record.
customhouseregular
A slight divergence...does anybody remember the old speedway commentaries on reel to reel tape, presented by Wally Loake I think.

I still have a Tape of his somewhere. The 1972 World Final - I've no idea where it is now though. It'll probably turn up when I snuff it.
daveallan81
I must say I've never heard of gramophone recordings of speedway though familiar with the cassettes of the seventies and eighties. I always thought buying a commentary to relive the action was akin to voting for 'Goal of the Season' on the radio. Strangely I was recently clearing out old CD-roms and discovered an assortment of speedway related songs in a folder. Reg Luckhurst was amongst them along with a couple of other familiar names and seeing this thread I thought it might be interesting (and I use that word advisedly) to hear some of these leviathons of pop one more time. No requests please, I'll upload them as I have the time and I will not be responsible for any aural trauma sustained by repeated listening. If any of the contributors are embarassed by any of the offerings I post, well tough, you should have thought about that before you booked the studio So, ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome to the stage one more time Rockin' Reg Luckhurst... https://www.dropbox.com/s/wau0bndn57vnq9y/Reg%20Luckhurst%20-%20Your%20Cheatin%27%20Heart.mp3?dl=0 Download and play on your favoured media player. If you don't want to sign up to Dropbox click the 'no thanks, continue to download' link on the pop-up screen and all should be well.
