Bonus Points

Recommended Posts

Indeed, but it could be argued that's part of the luck of the draw, although for European competition, you could use group results and/or seedings to favour a particular team when deciding who plays at home in the second leg.

Maybe away goals really should count double, just to give TWK a coronary... ;)

I don't think so Humphrey.  ;)

Bonus points should count in a riders average ...it's a team sport and the best ride can be shielding a rider who is winning the race to get a 5-1 that would never have been got otherwise.....for that rider to get 2 on his average compared to the race winner's 3 is stupid.....team strengths should be reflected at the end of the season to reflect bonus points....a paid max is equal to a full max any day of the week.

Indeed, but the fact remains that bonus points inflate averages and penalise team riding if used for team building. They also make wages unpredictable, at least with respect to standard points money.

So on the one hand you think team riding should be rewarded then on the other hand you suggest massively penalising riders and teams that do it.

Take a 45 all draw, team A wins every race, team B secures every 2nd and 3rd place.

For team A they are bang on the 42 combined team points, the promoter, if he wished, could keep that team together next year and he has only had to pay out for 45 points

For Team B however this is 56 points combined team average points on top of paying out an extra 15 points compared to team A

If team B repeat this scenario every match they would be the best part of 14 points over the permitted 42 team average and woul have to be decimated the next year.

You actually have it completely the wrong way round. Not including BP for team building is rewarding riders and teams, not punishing them

For me, the scoring system in team speedway should be changed so that points are only awarded for beating opponents, then the problem of bonus points goes away.

'Strewth ! That's so blindingly obvious - why has no-one thought of it before (including myself in half a century watching speedway)?

On second thoughts, not so obvious or clever. What could be simpler to the uninitiated than 3-2-1-0?

No need to mention bonus points in the programme or match report - they only affect the riders' pay, not the match result.
