Oceania Sidecar Championship

Recommended Posts

British sidecar speedway pilots Mark Cossar and Michael Stace are competing in Australia in the 1,000cc sidecar speedway Continental Championship of F.I.M. Oceania. The opening round was last night (Saturday, 7 February) at Gillman Speedway in South Australia.

Two World Champions, the Oceania Champion, and National Champions from four countries are amongst the riders who will contest the three round series this year, with meetings at Gillman, Mildura and Kurri Kurri.

Former world champions Darrin Treloar (NSW) and Mick Headland (SA), and the reigning Oceania Champion, Mark Plaisted (SA), will lead the Australian riders against the British (Mark Cossar), New Zealand (Paul Humphrey) and USA (Joe Jones) champions.

The multiple British Champion Cossar will be more than a match for them if he can repeat last season’s form when he became the first overseas rider to win a round of the national grand slam series.

Other multiple championship winning riders taking part include former Australian and South Australian Champion Mark Mitchell who finished third behind Treloar and Headland in last weekend’s Grand Slam round; multiple New South Wales Champion Grant Bond; and Victorian Champions Warren Monson and Byren Gates.

Darren Trealor was on fire for the whole season and aside from winning every round of the Oceania Title, also won the Sidecar Grand Slam series and a couple of State titles as well. He can be considered unlucky not to win another Australian Sidecar Title, as his bike expired just 100 m short of the finish line. This allowed Justin Plaistead from Adelaide through to win his first Aussie Title.

The international outfits that contested the Oceania Title are becoming more competitive, with the Cossar crew from the UK, the American Jones and The Kiwi Buchanan leading the charge. Other New Zealand crews like Humphrey and Gannon, also performed well. This made for some good racing and also added that unknown element that seeing international riders for the first time creates.

These crews have proved they can mix it with Australia's best, and their commitment and professionalism adds to the excitement and spectacle of the series.

The Oceania series is a great initiative and it would be fantastic to see it continue, as it is well supported by the spectators.

Could the series further expand with the inclusion of a competitive South African crew, and how would the Dutch and German sidecar crews adapt to the 1000cc speedway machines?

The Sidecar Speedway World Title should be instigated again as there is strong International support for this event. The successful running of the Oceania series in Australia has demonstrated that international sidecar racing can be competitive and draw crowds.

The World Final meet was well supported in Australia, and by Australian teams when it has been held in Europe. With continued international support and the developement of more international teams, the interest in this event should also grow.

The major problem may be in maintaining the momentum that the Sidecar Grand Slam, and the Oceania Series have generated. Successfully capitalising on that to promote the World Title is logically the next step. As a spectator it would be great to see these events grow. I will, as i have done in the past, continue to attend.

Unfortunately i have not been able to find any information about the current status of the Sidecar World Title.

As well as the FIM Oceania Championship round, Gilman is staging the FIM World Cup, ( both '1000cc Sidecars') . . . on consecutive days !

I suppose as a 'World' event, the latter trumps the Oceania, a supposed 'regional' but Open title, (USA & GB teams participating, and seen by many 'til now as the de facto 1000cc World Championship,) and that, as seen in 2-wheel FIM classes, the 'World Cup' is a forerunner to the re-introduction of the 'World Championship' for the 1000cc machines, as mooted above,
. . .but it must be confusing, - and undermine one of the 2 events, - which? - , to juxtapose the 2 competitions, especially if they're running the same field.

The 2016 FIM Oceania Speedway 1000cc Sidecar Championship has been won by the title defending champion of last year, Darrin Treloar.

The final of the first round at Gillman last Sunday was won by Treloar, and today's second round final at Undera was won by Warren Monson.

Overall top 3:

1st .... Darrin TRELOAR (& Blake Cox) - AUSTRALIA
2nd ... Trend HEADLAND (& Darryl Whetstone) - AUSTRALIA
3rd .... Mark PLAISTED (& Darcy Risstrom) - AUSTRALIA
