markyb
Just read the news about the farce in Oxford re the rejection for planning permission for homes etc and the potential for a speedway return. wow what a fantastic prospect ! So many memories of Friday nights at Cowley. Plus the days of Hans and Simon. With the latest issues with the Aussie riders fiasco, so good to have some potentially great news. However realise it's very early days !
25yearfan
Fingers crossed hey! Oxford Cheetahs in the Premier League with an Academy side in the National League would be good and viable!

Popular Post lucifer sam
All we can do is hope at present. Indeed. Sending out the Press Releases on behalf of Oxford Speedway, I've tried to avoid giving anyone false hope. I have to say there were points where I thought it was pointless. Standing out in the cold outside the Kassam Stadium on a cold winter's morning collecting signatures, wondering what the point was. Fortunately, the likes of Ian Sawyer and Rob Dunn ploughed on (I dread to think how many phone calls Ian has made), to bring us to where we are now. They've worked hard to make sure we have complete support from the local council. Now there is a chance that it could happen. Of course, it might not either. But there is at least a chance. Things do look better than at any time since 2008. Fingers and toes and other bodily parts crossed. All the best Rob Edited January 30, 2015 by lucifer sam

A ORLOV
If they did start up at PL or NL level I am sure some fans would travel from Swindon especially when we have a two or three week gap between our meetings.
hagonshocker
Really really hope someone has the balls to start Oxford up again even if it is NL level (and i mean no disrespect to NL) ...little steps but would be amazing to have the Cheetahs back...when you look back to the days of local derbies with Oxford and Reading it really is hard to fathom why we havent got them to look forward to anymore....a disgrace
MattK
How much would it cost to get speedway going again? The last time I went there was for the short-track which was 2012 and the pits looks pretty wrecked, there was a tractor parted in the forth bend bar and the terracing on the third and forth bends looks ready to be condemned. And that was three years ago! Obviously, the main grandstand was still usable and it would be suitable if you're only looking at crowds of up to 500 (which would be OK for NL level) and you could have a make shift pits area in the second bend/back straight (as they did for the short-track). It's nice to talk about a speedway revival but who is going to finance the venture? How much would a prospective promoter be looking at? Are those who backed the campaign going to each chip in a couple of hundred pounds each? I doubt it - supporting a campaign is one thing, paying for what money is needed is another matter surely? I still haven't given up hope altogether at Sunderland after FORTY ONE years. Gatwick Rocket
I really enjoyed my visits to Oxford in the early 1990s when I was living in High Wycombe. A really nice race track. I'm so glad the developers are losing their battle to build houses where Hans Nielsen, Simon Wigg and many others ruled the roost.
25yearfan
I think there will be parties interested in getting the Oxford Cheetahs speedway team going again cause the BSPA have been keeping a close eye on developments hence the reason why this latest news was on their website! I'd say that if Oxford speedway reopens next year then after 9 years of no League action, interest will be high for a while which will mean decent crowds and decent returns for the promotion who take the plunge, so their will be interest! The 1984-92 top flight glory years with messrs Payne, Crapper, Nielsen, Wigg and CO when Oxford were one of the better supported tracks shows that getting 1000-1500 average crowds in 2016 (which in modern times are decent crowds for British speedway) are obtainable if things are done correctly! As for Sunderland speedway at Boldon, it has been investigated more than once since the 1974 closure but the two biggest obstacles there are the extortionate rent the owners want and Newcastle speedway being against it cause they think it will impact on their crowd levels, something I'd dispute! I think theres scope there for a viable NL operation cause I'm sure there'd be enough people who don't currently go to speedway in the hugely populated Sunderland area interested and Newcastle and Redcar hardcore speedway fans looking for an alternative speedway day out would be interested - Mildenhall have always got a fair old scattering of nearby Ipswich, King's Lynn and Peterborough fans in the crowd enjoying some NL scrapes! Now an Oxford V Sunderland speedway League fixture in the future would be nice! Edited February 1, 2015 by 25yearfan

brianbuck
My very best wishes to the people who have worked so hard to bring speedway back to Oxford. May their efforts be suitably rewarded with a new team next season. It's my belief that Oxford is well ready for a speedway resumption and that it will be well supported, and my own recommendation would be to go for the National League which is the place I think that speedway stands the best chance of stabilising itself and creating itself a platform from which to expand again. I'm sorry to say that I haven't been to Oxford Speedway since Good Friday 1958 (the night that Jack Young made his British comeback with Coventry and won the meeting with 14 points) but I'd certainly try and get there again if the Cheetahs do make it back. EnglishRoundabout
Enjoyed my visits to Sandy Lane and the notorious Blackbird Leys estate which backed onto the stadium. Great local rivalry with Swindon. Was always good to see the Cowley stadium mostly full of Robins fans too! Remember seeing the great Ole Olsen score a sublime 15 point maximum riding for Coventry in the mid seventies at Cowley. Fairly scorched the track he was so fast. Tidy little circuit. Sadly missed. Never really enjoyed the racing at Cowley ER,was always great to go there though in local derbies great atmosphere the three team tournaments were great.Often a 11.olock start with another fixture at 7.30 great days really.I went regular to Oxford for about three years when Nielsen really was the business, was never a fan but i changed my mind about him his record overall is embarrassing so good.
