Local Boy
Lets get this straight, do a club sign a rider, then apply for a visa for him, or do the rider apply for a visa then join a club, when we know the answer to that, we will know who is to blame. You have to ask yourself why are there less British riders in the sport now, and if you don't know the answer to that, your not paying attention, when you let sportsmen from all sports come into this Country, without any form of control, you get whats happening now, that Countrys sportsmen will suffer, you will get less and less has the years go on, at some stage someone with half a brain behind a deck in charge will see that, like this year, and do something about it, Speedway is at the bottom of the pile, has sports go in this Country, and it now seems, that is where they are going to start, when a team bins British riders in favour of riders from other Country's, then they must take some of the blame for whas happening. My understanding is that an employer applies for a Visa. The rules used to be that any job should have been advertised in the appropriate media/geography to attract suitable applicants. This must include the appropriate media in the EU/ UK; if the employer could show that there were no suitable EU/UK applicants they could look at suitable non-UK applicants and if they found someone apply for a visa. The appropriate media obviously varies from industry to industry.
Roger MARTIN
I think the clubs must take the blame for this, looking at the ruling, when a rider signs for a club on a three year visa, he must stay with that club, you can blame the clubs for not understanding the criteria for a visa, when signing riders from Australia and the USA.. Goodiepatchie
Â If Sedgeman and Masters face waiting till mid March to attain their visa`s, its fair to say all the other riders will be in the same boat, mid March is cutting things a bit fine for some clubs. very fine!! and what if they don't get granted visas or, as is the norm for most government agencies, it takes a tad longer than expected to be sorted Are Edinburgh or any other club for that matter prepared to take the risk? montie
This contradicts suggestions that all visas including existing have been cancalled.  Visa`s havnt been cancelled,as most actual;ly havnt got anything to cancel yet  Its the sponsors certificates belonging to the clubs that have, now they have to re-apply  You cant get a visa with a sponsor certifacte number
Steve55
Think one or two on here need to stop playing politics with this and looking to blame a certain Party (UKIP). Think their aim (UKIP) is to take us out of the EU to stop our borders being open to the EU migrants who come here claiming Unemployment, child & all the other benefits they can claim. Never mind the strain on the NHS & Education system. And lastly to stop all the billions paid into the EU every year. Â Speedway riders come here to entertain us & earn a decent living for doing so and it appears that the BSPA have taken their eye off the ball, but are being educated in how to correct what they have allowed to creep in. Â Hopefully once this has been done all will be ok. Lets not look to BLAME somebody because it makes us feel better, but look to the solution that'll put things back on track, as it were. :]
cheekycobra
Thing is though CC, it's not an immigration thing as HA and others would have you believe. With sportsmen, it is the right to play their sport to add quality to the sport. Footballers like Diego Costa, Suarez, Courtois, Alexis Sanchez, etc, are not emigrating into the UK, and in the same way, speedway riders should be treat in the same way, and accepted as being transient sportsmen not immigrants. Immigration, visa's, .. whatever. The thing is, this is only happening because theres an election soon, The British people have voiced their opinion, and the government are trying to show that they are doing something about it.... Only in a very "PC" way, because they don't want to offend the wrong people who have human rights. Another thing, speedway at premier level cant afford the "elite" so fill their team with equal ability riders, to match. So some of these quotes of riders having to be this and that are all wrong. I would'nt mind an all british team, but there aint enough British riders to go around, so we need them as much as they need us. If they contribute to the system then whats all the fuss about. Anyway Alex Harkess reckons it's all been sorted out now and ALL the riders involved will be here by March.
screm
very fine!! and what if they don't get granted visas or, as is the norm for most government agencies, it takes a tad longer than expected to be sorted Are Edinburgh or any other club for that matter prepared to take the risk? Â And as things stand at the minute there in lies the conundrum, I`m sure the clubs will do all they can to get to get the visa issues sorted but there is bound to be a rider or two left out when the season starts. BWitcher
So it's OK to allow in(note not emigrate) third rate footballers from all over the world, and employ them even down into League 2. I, and no one else, is saying Speedway should get special privileges, but sport in general is different. given who is allowed to play in other sports. Note again, this is NOT immigration, but allowing migrants? in to support and enrich a sport. Â Please give some names of these footballers. Â As has been pointed out there are stringent rules in place for work permit footballers. Edited January 22, 2015 by BWitcher
crescent girl
What about Elite League ice-hockey? At least two-thirds of the players currently playing in Britain are Canadian or American?

As cresent girl says about EL Ice Hockey, a lot of sportspeople who are in Football and Ice Hockey are NOT World class by any imagination/qualification. In Ice Hockey, the run of the mill US and Canadian players are only good standard playing over here. Even Football players qualifying for qualification to play over here, anybody who is player in the minor FL divisions are of dubious standard, and is the reason why there is currently discussions going on about the %age of foreign players playing in our professional leagues. It's only a few months ago where is was discussed on a thread on the BSF. Are you really that blinkered that you think the lower standard players are bringing anything to our game except taking cash out of it. Interesting that I'm just reading an article about Arsenal attempting to sign a player called Paulista who requires a work permit - which has been refused by the FA as he doesn't meet to required criteria for a work permit. This is a player rated at 6 million pound allegedly. Â It says the FA act on behalf of the home office, just like the BSPA do - however they dish out work permit willy nilly it seems. alang
Maybe the immigration authorities should also question how the Polish Speedway authorities can stop Polish riders racing in UK.The licence issue sounds like an excuse because surely there is supposed to be free movement of workers within the EU.
