customhouseregular
It occurred to me today that a number of forum members, like myself are in-betweenies. Why am I am in-betweenie?. I missed the first 30ish years of British speedway and have not attended for the past 30ish years, save for last year's British GP. There must be others like me, who caught the period in between. We saw many of the "greats"...Briggs, Mauger, Olsen, Penhall etc. etc., but missed the earlier greats such as Craven, Crutcher, Young and Williams. I and others also missed modern greats...Tony Rickardssom being a notable example. We all have a vast amount of knowledge and wisdom and many memories, but much of it not from personal experience. How good to have seen Peter Craven and Brian Crutcher et al, without having to be 80 years old!.
norbold
....er....excuse me, but speaking from personal experience, may I say you do not need to be 80 years old - or even 70 years old - to have seen Peter Craven and Brian Crutcher or even Jack Young, Split Waterman, Aub Lawson and Ron Johnson. BOBBATH
Well I'm 68, I'm decaying from the inside out(this cannot be!!) and didn't see any of the riders named in Norbold's post-but did see Briggs ,Fundin , Knutsson, both Moore's Ronnie and Peter,-saw my first World Final in 1965 and my last LA 1982(but not all the ones in between)-did see 1975 , 78 and 81 though. So I'm with CHR on this one. BTW 80 ain't old anymore -Chuck Berry is still performing at 88-apropos of nothing Honor Blackman is 89 but am not sure she still performs in any sense of the word anymore!!! OK OK so kick me off the forum for this ageist comment!!

I was being a tad "tongue in cheek" Norbold but you are right.
norbold
Hi BOBBATH. I'm younger than you, but saw all of the riders I mentioned.
Guest
I have seen many of the speedway greats having attended my first meeting at New Cross in April 1946. What wonderful memories of some extremely talented riders and some nostalgic tales that could be told about many of them. BOBBATH
Hi Norbold-that's because I didn't see speedway till Newport opened in 1964-wish I'd seen those I just missed-particularly Peter Craven. You being younger than me makes me feel even older!!

I never saw any of the above Riders Race. I truly wish I had though. My debut supporting Speedway was in 1974.
