Deano
Martin, classic car clubs, once the mantle of the old retired British gent class have managed to grab the student population. The clubs found that a classic car is very cheap to insure for 17 year olds, also with a screw driver, big mallet and spanner to hand, the cars when stopped get going again very easily. The clubs have created an avenue for students to get even cheaper insurance by being members of the relevent classic car club this also gets them cheaper spares, the clubs also supply tuition on servicing and repairs. To the point now, youngsters gather in larger numbers at old car rallies. The classic car scene is therefore looking quite healthy at the moment. So, how do we transfer this very similar story to Birmingham Speedway?
SCB
Bollocks! Anyone can receive Berwick's e-Newsletter. Go to their website, enter your e-mail address and click. You go on their list, and receive every issue of the Newsletter from there on in, absolutely free. Quiet in close season, maybe only two or three issues per month, but up to three or four every week of the season. Secretive my pretty backside......... Which is more fuss than just putting the news on the clubs website for everyone to read. Then send people an email when the page is updated. It's a stupid idea that makes no sense what so ever. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise though.
waiheke1
I guess the logic is that if u get an email you read it. Whereas u may nor bother logging onto the website? How many non berwick fans would randomly log onto the website? tbh, no reason why the info in the newsletter couldnt be recreated on the website. email is hardly social media though is it? TonyMac
In an interview Retro Speedway did with Martin Rogers a couple of years ago, he made the point that he would love to have promoted in the era where social media was a device tool to attract new customers and keep existing ones updated on a much more regular basis via the likes of Facebook and Twitter. I understand that e-zines or e-newsletters are commonly used by professional football clubs today, emailing their season ticket holders on at least a weekly basis. It is unthinkable that ANY club in ANY of the three current British speedway leagues, or the BSPA itself, would not use those two sites (and possibly others) to better inform their public. Woz01
A couple of years back Coventry wanted a mailing list so they can email fans. I signed up as did others but I don't think i got a single email off them.
Deano
How could you get a proper decent speedway relatied advert/piccy to pop up on peoples facebook feed? Particularly people who wouldn't normally look at a motorbike related feature. We all hate them adverts, but, I have to be honest I do read some of them..... And how many non-Berwick fans do you think have signed up to the Berwick news letter on the off chance that in 2 years time they may want to read their news. Or how many local of Berwick who one day having seen the speedway on Sky from Berwick had signed up previously in case they one day heard about the sport? Now if everything was on a website, on twitter and on Facebook that local who had never heard of speedway could stick "Berwick Speedway" into Facebook twitter and google and find all sorts. But not so now as Berwick have it all hidden away. Madness. Also, logging onto a website? Thats the point, there should be no logging anything. click a link is the most they should have to do. A news letter take time, albeit maybe only a minute, to sign up for. Floating fans won't do that. But give someone a link to click on, people will do it. Particularly people who wouldn't normally look at a motorbike related feature. We all hate them adverts, but, I have to be honest I do read some of them..... Create a facebook event for every meeting, invite all the fans. It pops up on a persons news feed, "Joe Bloggs is attending the Slough Vikings super invitational speedway meeting" - Joes friend clicks it to se what it's about.... WOW he thinks seeing all them photos of riders ridings sliding around a bike and crash. I'll go and see that, he clicks he's attending too. But no, speedway prefer to moan about social media. And when it does have stands like at the NEC bike show recently it has photos of Havvy and Garrity hunched over chatting, looking like they're doing a drug deal on a Middlesbrough council estate. Crashes are spectavular and grab people attention. Two guys having a chat, doesn't. Then on twitter you have a poster made up with " the Slough Vikings super invitational speedway meeting...." and a huge photo of a rider sliding the bike (not last years podium photo with profile pics of the riders - frankly most rider are ugly so won't attract anyone's attention!) and tell everyone that if they retweet it they'll go into a draw for free entry. Takes people 5 seconds to retweet it and if 250 people retweet it to there 200 followers you have just advertised for the price of one ticket to 40,000 people, easily. Tom Turner
The guys at Go Speed know that they are lagging behind and they are commited to playing catch up. There are some really exciting things planned for this season that will address a lot of these issues. These things won't happen overnight though and will take a couple of seasons to roll out, but they are on their way.

How many seasons do these guys need? Time to get rid and get someone in who knows what they're doing I think!

Time to get rid and get someone in who knows what they're doing I think! And that's exactly what they are doing. There is far more in the works than simply a few facebook pages! These things will take a little time because there is only so much man power available to them. The right people are moving in to the right places and these things will start to take off. Pirate Nick
The only actions I've seen them take is to threaten forward thinking promotions when they post videos on their website or you tube? If they haven't got the manpower after all these years then surely it's time to hand it over to someone who has?

If they haven't got the manpower after all these years then surely it's time to hand it over to someone who has? Well first of all it isn't just a few facebook pages. Maintaining a social media presence for an entire sport is very much a full time job for several people and that money has to come from somewhere. It's not just the staff that need paying, there are several other aspects that need to be financially accounted for as well. It's all very easy to sit back and say do this, do that, but there is very much more to it than that. There is much more in the pipeline than just social media and a lot of it has been ongoing for many months. Unfortunately there are a lot of individuals and companies out there with their fingers in the speedway pie and a lot of these things cannot progress until they have all given their nod. It's a gruelling procedure but the ball is moving. Just bear with them a little longer and I am sure you will be pleased with outcome. There are some really exciting things planned for this season that will address a lot of these issues. These things won't happen overnight though and will take a couple of seasons to roll out, but they are on their way. There have been "exciting things" planned ever since 1) every team had to have Columbian registered web sites and 2) every web site had to agree to prime site advertising space being dedicated to GoSpeed, exactly for their exciting plans that would be the next big thing. That was some years ago. It's still not happened. I always share stuff on twitter and Facebook, ain't that the best way of letting nearly all the world know? See, it's as simple as that. One lady in the middle of Norfolk does a better job of promoting her team than the massed ranks of the BSPA / SCB / AP Mafia / GoSport / Orville et all, all put together. And that's exactly what they are doing. There is far more in the works than simply a few facebook pages! These things will take a little time because there is only so much man power available to them. The right people are moving in to the right places and these things will start to take off. Good job these people aren't running the NHS or commanding troops on the battlefield then isn't it? ...Unfortunately there are a lot of individuals and companies out there with their fingers in the speedway pie and a lot of these things cannot progress until they have all given their nod... Now that bit I can well believe. The first thing that a burocracy has to do is to protect the burocracy. Good luck with getting your "nods" lol. I recall in 2011 when there was a World Cup on, plus Wimbledon, plus a Royal Wedding, plus, plus, plus...etc the Birmingham promotion needed "the nod" from GoSpeed to show a promotional video for Brummies Speedway in the advert breaks on "The Big Screen" in Birmingham's Victoria Square, where tens of thousands of people would have seen it. Anyone who was at the Birmingham City ground at the start of that season would have seen something similar...but according to what Mick Bratley told me at the time, all was ready, but as copyright holders, GoSpeed needed to give their permission to show the video...and it never came.

Negativity isn't going to help anything. All I can say is that I believe Go Speed have the best interests of British Speedway at heart and it's not always as clear cut as it seems. I'm a full time Professional Sports Coach working longer hours per week than most people, I've built and maintain my own personal website and manage all my own social media outlets. I always try to maintain a high SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for everything I do and fortunately I’ve been very successful on the old internet! I have 2 friends that are in the same work area as me and I’ve built their websites and advised them on what to do social media wise. All of the above I’ve taught myself to do! Now if I can do all that with a full time job how come Go Speed need several staff and lots of money?
