New Science
Wildcat ,You're seriously not comparing Cardiff to Torun ?
Wildcat
There are very different reasons for venues. Clearly Torun has (nearly) everything; great racetrack and good atmosphere. But for size, Cardiff will always better it (a one-off world final should attract vast numbers). Looks like Warsaw would be a potential venue too now. But, as I said, for very different reasons different venues will offer something. You could easily have one-off's at Copenhagen, Stockholm, Gorzow, Mallila, Bydgoszcz. Just depends if you want a good track or a good stadium! Edited December 2, 2014 by Wildcat

bill94d
I can't see Chris Harris on anyone's list. With Tai's departure we in UK are paying a terrible price for this GP thing. At least in the old days every rider got a chance. Isn't it ironic that the biggest night in Speedway is Cardiff and yet only 2 or 3 of most people's lists ride in the Elite League. We put on the biggest night for all the riders who don't ride here.

Think Walsaw has topped Cardiff staduim and going to be a 52000 sell out. UK really is dead now for top line speedway. Hear big European meeting coming to UK next year and SEC 2016 so will get more of a chance to see the top chaps Edited December 3, 2014 by theknow 2

bill94d
If you mean the "old style" world championship that's far from true.In the 50's and 60's there were rounds of the World Championship at every track in UK. There were similar on the continent. The qualifiers amalgamated culminating in what people are remembering with fondness at Wembley in September every year. Every rider got a chance. In fact they got 2 chances, since there were 2 meetings in each round till the later stages. I don't understand your comment.

Each British track put through selected riders to the UK-staged world championship rounds. How many reserves riders were involved? In the European rounds, countries put forward a few riders - I think at one-time Holland put two riders into the world championship qualifiers. I cannot remember, although they were staging speedway at that time, any riders from Bulgaria, Romania or even Hungary in many 1960 qualifiers. The old world championship qualifiers were very muddled in their organisation - and the GP system is far superior. The format works well in other forms of motorcycle and motor sport and speedway's acceptance of the GP system is a step forward for the sport. norbold
I don't know what period you are talking about, Gustix, but when I started going in 1960, the early rounds were held on all the Provincial League tracks for Provincial League riders and National League reserves. Every rider in the National League was entered into the World Championship. Also in 1960 continental rounds were held in Yugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Germany and there were certainly Hungarian riders taking part. And of course there were rounds in all four Scandinavian countries. It sounds pretty comprehensive to me.
