PHILIPRISING
If the GPs are such wondrous money making opportunities and they don't do anything the league clubs already do then why didn't the BSPA got of their backsides and run the British GP all them years ago when they had the chance? They could be making a fortune now. In fact, Sweden, Poland and Denmark have multiple GPs, why don't the BSPA get off their backsides now and run the English GP? THEY did run them at London (Hackney) and Bradford before John Postlethwaite bought the FIM rights and after a one-off at Coventry had the balls to take the event to Cardiff ... many people at the time thought he was mad, not least building a speedway track in what is essentially a rugby stadium. Terry Russell was part of that vision but did't have the financial clout to undertake what was a massive gamble and the BSPA individually and collectively were in no position to do so either. JP certainly didn't get everything right and many of his ideas never even reached fruition but he raised the bar massively. I have been lucky enough in my own journalistic career to attend World and European Cup finals (soccer) tests matches at Lords, Wimbledon tennis and many other top class sporting events and in my opinion Cardiff is right up there and even now sends a tingle down my spine when I enter the Millennium each year and see a speedway track lay out in such a magnificent venue.

Because there isn't any money in running an individual GP, and you're more likely to lose money by the time you've coughed over the licence fee. The money is in the series television rights, sponsorship and GP licensing fees. Why of course the BSPA and others didn't the whole shebang themselves, even if they had bring on board a commercial partner, is the more pertinent question. John Postlethwaite bought the FIM rights I think more precisely BSI bought the rights with Benfield money.

PRESUMABLY Warsaw, Horsens and Melbourne are staging GPs with some expectations of making a profit, Krsko are always champing at the bit to return, as they have done this year, Prague have been running for over 15 years and doubtless wouldn't do so if they continually lost money and Torun keep coming back for more. Warsaw, Horsens and Melbourne haven't run a GP yet, so there's no proof either way. Won't Horsens be mates rates anyway? Think Krsko was heavily supported by their local government before, and when that dried-up they dropped off the circuit. The situation with Polish tracks and the financial support they get is well known, although obviously things are not entirely rosy in the garden with tracks/councils losing interest in running GPs, not to mention the establishment of the rival SEC. Don't know about Prague, but maybe they're supported by the city, or have far lower fees because BSI wants to keep them on the circuit for some reason. Same with the Italian GP that no-one could understand why it appeared year-after-year. Edited April 11, 2015 by Humphrey Appleby
weatherwatcher
The whole SGP circit is now nothing but a huge money making circus. At the end of the day, there is someone out there making an awful lot of money out of it. That sadley is not going back into speedway. If the BPSA staged the British GP, I very much doubt if any of our clubs would see any profit from it. No doubt it would go into the coffers of someone elses pocket and they would say thank you very much. See you all again next year. That has paid for a good holiday for my family. Because if run correctly, with TV fee's, ticket sales and all the rest that comes with the event, there is a lot of money to be made. But no way on this earth is it going to help any British speedway club. If they get anything it will be peanuts, compared to what they take on the day. uk_martin
Why don't you ask the questions of the promotions/those in the know, and put the interviews in the Star? We would all be interested ☺ Speedway Star and investigative journalism simply do not mix. The whole British speedway media and multimedia scene is one big cartel. If you do what the BSPA / SloSpeed International (Terry Russell) say, and print their press releases, prevent your photos / videos from going onto the Internet, and lick the appropriate backsides, you may belong...if you ask too many questions, dig beneath the surface, expose the soft underbelly of the sport, then you are in trouble. Then you'll be invited to the SCB disciplinary committee for a meeting without tea and biscuits. Your card will be marked and you will be out. Phillip Rising and all at Speedway Star are at an age now where if that magazine were to fold, they would be too old to get jobs anywhere else (other than at B&Q possibly)...they have to keep their jobs at Speedway Star, so they have to keep that magazine running, so they have to be patsies to the authorities, print what the BSPA tell them, and do as they are told, and if that means looking the other way whilst the truth unfolds, so be it. What we need is a proper terrier of an investigative reporter in a tabloid newspaper...that would be fun.
