flipper11
Although I am a southerner it has to be Joe Owen, what a rider.

Veterancub
Joe Owen ....and I'm a Teesside fan!....There were a lot of top number ones around in that era including Tom Owen, John Jackson, Steve Lawson, Lou Sansom, Dave Perks, Martin Yeates And, of course Steve Wilcock but Joe was outstanding. There have been many others over recent years but Joe was an attraction at every track he rode at.....pure class and I booed him at every opportunity.....he was that good.!
RedcarRacer
what about Martin Yeates ??? was Rod ever a no.1 ??? For me Hunter was the best number one I ever saw at Cleveland Park, his one year he was incredible - 1990 I think...the year Poole beat us to everything...sure he averaged over 10 or if not very close. cyclone
Have to agree with others that the best performance in a single season (1976) at second tier level, was Joe Owen. Liked watching his distinctive style which along with Rye House's Bob Garrad, were the most pleasing on the eye.
Leicester Hunter
Joe went full time BL in 77 and but for his life threatening accident would have stayed there. He became a solid 2nd heat leader at that level. What you also had that you don't see now was the same promotion running a BL and NL track and I suspect Joe was leaned on later in his career to ride where his name would make the promotion the most money. That would be the NL where he was a huge draw. On talent alone, he should not have dropped down I agree and would not be allowed to these days. According to an interview Joe did with I think the Speedway Star some years ago, he was offered good terms to move to Birmingham for the 1980 season after Hull went sailing over the points limit the previous year. He turned the move down out of loyalty to Ian Thomas and Bryan Larner. Joe did admit that with hindsight it wasn't the brightest thing for him to do, as the move would have given his career a further boost by going to completely different type of circuit. Joe Owen was bloody good round the old Perry Barr, and I would have loved to have seen him there.
FAST GATER
At 2nd tier level it was Joe Owen. No contest. Go and check his 1976 stats. Joe Owen speaking to Tom Owen "don't let Jacko gate YOU will never catch HIM" I was there and the diffence between Joe and Jacko was Joe was a little too brave for his own good .Would not argue with stats but it is not as clean cut as they may lead you to believe but that's just IMO. lucifer sam
was Rod ever a no.1 ??? Not at a big club ! Chewbacca, well Rod Hunter was Newcastle's No 1 in 1989, so obviously you don't regard the Diamonds as a big club All the best Rob
Cliffeboy
Magnus Zetterstrom... 1 season 9+ Average and 2 seasons 10+ Average, as well winning the Fours and Champions Chase during that time too. When Zorro joined Somerset he changed the whole club from a team that was usually down the bottom to a club that actually had a chance of winning things. He left and Jason Doyle came in and proceeded to impress even more over three periods with the club. Call me bias but I think if he had been riding this season there would have been a few more trophies in the cabinet and that is no disrespect to Edinburgh who were worthy champs or the other 2014 Rebels who were superb this term.
