Coventry 2015

The 1st round pick is reserve 2014 league position, then the 2nd round is league position, so Coventry will get 3rd pick after Poole and Kings Lynn.

Will they ? surely if Cov choose a protected asset in group 1 as well as Poole and Kings lynn then they will have 6th pick in round two .

Poole get last pick in round 1 and first pick in round 2. Lynn get last but 1 pick in round 1 and 2nd pick in round 2. Coventry will get to pick in round 2 after Poole and Lynn.

 

TBH, in Garrity they have the 5th best rider (Auty, Blackbird, Kerr, Newman ahead of them) any way so if it is done on order of the 1st pick Coventry would get 4th pick in round 2. So they're 3rd of 4th. Leicester, BV and Wolves will surely want Bates, Nielsen and Jacobs/Morris back and Lakeside will pick Ellis. Meaning Coventry get Sarj anyway, The only way Coventry can lose Sarj is if Poole pick him.

 

To protect Sarj and possibly be left with Roynon, Birks and Boxall is madness. The difference between Auty/Kerr and Garrity is minimal while Auty/Kerr to Roynon/Birk/Boxall is quite big. Of the 2nd group, there not a lot between Ellis/Sarj/Nielsen/Starke who have all been named as "top 2nd pick". By average last year Sarj was lower than Ellis, Starke, Nielsen, Morley, Rose, Jacobs, Morris and Bates. Im not getting why he's some "must have". I enjoyed watching him ride last season, given a choice I'd pick him but not at the expect of Garrity who is going places and should next year be a second string - you can't say that of Boxall or Birks and I'd not want to put money on Roynon being there either.

It has since been said that in fact the 2nd round of picks depends on who picks who in the Grade A picks. I assume they will be graded themselves. The Linksport site had it slightly wrong, 'as it stands' Poole do get first pick in round two but if they pick Newman then there 2nd pick will be determined by where Newman is in the list. It has been added onto there website to be fair.

Can you not see the flaw in that statement? Let's assume that Poole "protect" Newman giving them effectively their first choice rider, you then expect Poole to get first pick of the B grade riders! Really?? So the team that finished top gets the best two reserves available. Min you that's probably how MF envisages it :wink:

 

You also mentioned (sorry I didn't quote it) that by average, Garrity was the fifth averaged rider. What averages are you looking at then? According to the next to last Greensheet (the last one doesn't include FTRs) he was 3rd (behind Blackbird and Kerr). Which ever way you look at it - he is a top pick - as you well know.

Spot on.

I fear we'll get Roynan due to centiment. Sorry but too big a risk and not at the same level of most first pick list riders. He should be in the second draft list.

Similarly, if Coventry pick a 'protected asset' from Group 1, then they will have the penultimate (or 4th from last?) pick of Group 2. If they choose to protect a Group 2 asset, then they will have the penultimate choice of Group 1 riders - assuming the playoff positions rather than the final league positions dictate the order - otherwise it will be fourth from last pick..

I think Jason Garrity is a real star of the future, especially with the right people around him. If I were Mick Horton I would be looking to make Garrity an asset of the club. On the issue of Club assets, Is Garrity and asset of Rye House ? And is Edward Kennett still a Coventry asset ? I have lost track a little, but perhaps if so something could be done here. It seems Kennett is happy back at Rye House. Would be interesting to hear the views of others.

Must admit i have read that somewhere too so i think you are wrong SCB.

It would be totally the wrong thing for Poole (or any club) to have protection over one of the best Group 1 riders and then get 1st pick of Group 2.

Hopefully it will work that by using a protection of Group 1 will mean you fall further down the selection process for 2nd pick.

For the record, I too believe we should protect Garrity. However, looking at the proposed draft riders for next season, a few things have stood out for me:

 

1) It's such a shame that we are talking about using other riders (even Jason Garrity) over Adam Roynon. Had he not received so many injuries, and his career progressed the way it could have, I am convinced he would be an EL heat leader by now. I believe an in-form Adam Roynon (and I'm talking the Roynon of old, at the top of his game) is by far the best rider in that draft. Better even than Auty. However, I believe the injuries have taken their toll and he is simply not the rider he was, never mind developing into the rider he could have been. It's a very sad set of circumstances and I sincerely hope Adam can prove me wrong.

 

2) How Auty's career has stagnated. This is a rider I saw flying around Coventry as a 13 year old (or thereabouts) in times only a few seconds slower than the EL times. This is a rider who was pretty much on a par with Tai Woffinden when they were sharing a reserve berth at Scunthorpe.

 

Although I think most at the time recognised Woffinden as the better rider and better prospect, who could have imagined that the gulf between the two by now would be so astronomical? I know injuries have held Auty back, but I think his biggest mistake was made in the winter of 2011 when he signed for Scunthorpe.

 

In 2011, he found himself as the least favoured doubling-up reserve at Brandon, with Alun Rossiter favouring Nick Morris, and he left Coventry at the end of that season. Signing for Scunthorpe effectively ruled him out of any chance of riding for Coventry due to the shared Friday race night. Obviously I don't know the ins and outs of what brought about that decision but, since then, he's drifted in and out of the EL and has made no discernible progress as a Scunthorpe rider or as a doubling-up rider in the seasons since.

 

The fact that he's even being considered for the draft shows this. Proof, if ever there was one, that doubling up does not work.

 

In my opinion, if riders want to be the best, they have to abandon the safety net of the PL. It doesn't develop anyone. Compare Auty's progress to Tai Woffinden, who did a couple of seasons in the PL and then showed some ambition and went full time EL.

 

As for Bees, protect Garrity and keep fingers crossed Sarge will still be available when our second pick comes around.

That's a little unfortunate if that's the case as I would have liked for him to return. However, if he is going to double up again, I'm not too bothered.

 

Having both Garrity and Howarth doubling up was a complete and utter pain in the backside last year with missing meetings.

 

We know, if we have Garrity again, that he will be doubling up. To be honest, that's enough for me.

Plenty of riders around the 6 point mark who will be looking for a new team, Michelsen and Woodward to name two. Fisher and Barker are likely to be in the frame and wouldn't be a shabby 2nd string pairing. Could we see Fricke move up into the EL and join the Bees? There are plenty of options yet.

How teams get to pick draft riders

 

Firstly each of the 8 starting teams can protect just ONE rider who must be an asset or with that track as a FTR in 2014.

 

Once these riders have been protected, teams will take it in turn to pick a rider from Grade A. These 10 riders will be ranked from 1~10 which then determines the orders of picks for the Grade B riders.

 

If as expected Poole choose to protect Newman (3), then Coventry could protect Garrity (4), Kings Lynn protect Kerr (2), Belle Vue protect Worrall (5) and this would then allow Lakeside to protect Ellis in the second draft and wolves protect Jacobs.

 

So the pick in Grade A will start with Leicester who may pick Auty (1) and in turn be last to pick in the second draft. Wolves would be next and may pick Blackbird (6). Lakeside then pick Wright (7), followed by Swindon pick Roynon (9). This would mean Birks (8) and Box all (10) are in the guest list.

 

 

So as Lakeside and Wolves have protected picks, the order of picks are Swindon, Belle Vue, Coventry, Poole, Kings Lynn and then finally Leicester.

 

 

 

NOTE I have given the Grade A riders a rating and these are only examples but it is the ranking of the Grade A rider that determines the order of picks in the second draft.

I think we need a change from Barker and Fisher to be honest. I would be reluctant to have Barker in Bees colours again after he turned his back on Coventry for Birmingham. As for Fisher, I think he would be a good rider for Peterborough in the Premier League, but not riding for Coventry as well. I think it was noticeable his performances dropped when he was riding a heavy schedule including abroad, although, I understand and accept he was trying to get his family over, but I suspect he was cutting corners on engine servicing. I hope the rumors about Howarth are not true, I was really impressed with him especially in the play off stages after returning from injury.
