A difference of opinion in this weeks STAR. Chris Louis (Ipswich) says, "It is truly exciting times for speedway in this country"

Brian Havelock (Redcar) says, "Can we increase the amount of money coming through the gate, I don't think we can. It's dog eat dog at the moment and I can see that in three years down the line there won't be many clubs left at this rate."

How about doing away with the TR completely, and replacing it with the "Golden Heat" What's that then I hear you all say? Well, a team 10 points down can nominate any heat between heat 6 and heat 12 inclusive to be a "Golden Heat" rules/points are, well all double, to any of the heats riders, so it also provides jeopardy for the team calling for the heat, either team could benefit, blow up for the losing team as well as providing them with the chance to pull back the score......!!

What do you reckon?

A good idea so that is the kiss of death with this sport.

I think Brian is right actually. With new money coming into the PL at Glasgow, the sky's the limit at the moment with riders demands. A lot of teams would be further down the road with signing riders, but a lot is going on trying to try get riders to relax their demands and accept wage rates that the sport can only just afford at the moment. I hear riders who now can't double up, are asking for higher rates in the PL to make up their earnings. Utter dreamland.

demands might be sky high but Glasgow can only sign 7 blokes - the rest of the league should pay only what they can afford - if Glasgow win the league by 20 points good luck to them - see what happens to the crowds with 5-1 after 5-1

TBH i don't see the big problem - Eastbourne, Cradley and Birmingham have found an answer and any other track can do the same

a competitive league with English mainly young riders - whats not to like frankly

Of course there's a problem. Fans expect, and pay for, a higher standard with a decent team. Everyone can't just drop down into the lowest league, after all the investment they have put in and fans then walk awaying reminding promotions of what they expect and pay for. Glasgow has raised the pay demands of a lot of riders, and that is a problem in itself.

did Newcastle turn them away from the gate when Diamonds were briefly BL? No and fans subsequently accepted Div 2 racing. I respect your opinion but there are "stars" at each level and are appreciated by the supporters.

My all time hero is Steve Wilcock - hardly world class but excellent at his level - the only level is saw week in week out.

I can't honestly understand the Glasgow point - if they can get a contract with them then great otherwise they accept the going rate. Don't be held to ransom - if they ask for Glasgow money tell them to go ride there - as i said only 7 will get that money.

Why can't PL riders double-up???

Don't see what Glasgow has got to do with pay demands if they can afford to pay .Only 7 riders can ride for them, the rest will have to take what's on offer or find something else to make a living .Every season we here of Teams paying "silly money" so what's different now.The Promotions have done nothing to try and bring down the costs and some are saying it was the best AGM for years, any problems with rider demands they have only themselves to blame.Lets face it Glasgow will probably run at a loss this season if gate receipts were the only thing that mattered. If they have found people to bankroll them fair play to them.I wish them all the best.

No rider is bigger than any club. And you have to have a ceiling.

As long as fans accept that, whilst others pay stupid and non affordable pay rates. Fans can be fickle you know.

Promotions can only basically bring down costs, if they pay riders less. Then you imply they should keep the costs down, but when the riders demands increase, the promoters only have themselves to blame if they have to pay it. Fans will not stand on the terraces watching a crap team, because they have a ceiling and they not going to break it. Len got away with it last year tho.

All teams are not the same Colin. Newcastle had brilliant years with Div 2 teams, but didn't want a losing Div 1 team for that one season and we closed. There are teams like ipswich and Peterborough whose fans decry PL, and cannot accept they are not in the EL. Snobs yes.

I agree - Brian is right. Only pay out what you can afford. To do anything else would be foolish in the extreme and lead to Track closures as has been said.

In Glasgows case for next season they are obviously paying out what they can afford from their budget for next year ,if it doesn't work out no doubt they will cut their cloth accordingly. Its not their problem if other Teams can't match their pay offers to riders, plenty of other clubs have done the same thing.

Do the riders that are asking for sky high payments not realise, that in doing so that they risk clubs folding when they finally run out of funds. Surely it is much eaisier for them to ask for a wage that all the clubs are willing to pay. Maybe it is time for the promoters to set a limit on what all of agree to pay the riders.

All the teams pay the same rates for the riders potitions 1 to 7 in a rising scale. If the riders are not happy with what they get, then they will not have a team to ride for, because the way they are going with these demands for extra money it is a sure way to see more clubs going under this year.

Yes we all want to see so and so ride for our clubs but in this day and age the way the sport is going, it is only asking for trouble.

What about this ideas as an alternative to the dreaded tactical ride???
