Guest
Was any other BSF member - as I was - at this meeting: Wednesday, April 17, 1946? New Cross beat The Rest 46-37 in a challenge match. I wasn't even born! I think there was at least six recognised legtrailers in the meeting. It was deep cinders and spectacle in those great old days - top class, thrilling racing. By the way Norbold, thanks for explaining why you were not there! Guest
In case you are interested Norbold, the six legtrailers at New Cross that night were Phil Bishop, Mick Mitchell, Oliver Hart, Wally Lloyd, Jack Cooley and Ed 'Crusty' Pye. Bet you can tell some stories.

At the time of this meeting the track record for the 262 yard circuit was 58 seconds set by George Newton in 1938. The meeting's fastest time was 61.8 seconds in heat five by Eric French (New Cross) who won from The Rest riders Ron Clarke and Jack Parker with the other New Cross rider Les Wotton in fourth place. Guest
Speedway was cheaper in 1946: I paid one shilling nine pence admission (compared at current values as £3-29p) and sixpence for the programme (compared at today's values as 94p). Total in today's terms as £4.23p for my 1946 evening of speedway In case you are interested Norbold, the six legtrailers at New Cross that night were Phil Bishop, Mick Mitchell, Oliver Hart, Wally Lloyd, Jack Cooley and Ed 'Crusty' Pye. .
