2015 Euro's

I was a bit misinformed... it turns out that there are 6 permanent countries (Australia, Denmark, Poland, Russia, Sweden, USA). Each round will have a wildcard.

Torun - Latvia

Gustrow - Germany

Esbjerg - TBA

 

Great Britian will not take part, the pathetic BSPA did once again respond with a 'NO' to One Sport, although manager Alun Rossiter wanted to take part.

"The second change concerns the participants – national teams. “This year we have 6 permanent participants – these are national teams of Australia, Denmark, Poland, Russia, Sweden and the new one USA which is of course led by Greg Hancock. We will also give one wild card per each round – in Toruń the invitation will be given to Latvia, in Gustrow – Germany and the matter of the last participant of the tournament in Esbjerg will be cleared later. It won’t be definitely the national team of the Great Britain – this year we invited Brits again and, although riders and manager Alun Rossiter would like to start, BSPA has informed us that none of British riders will receive permission for starting in Speedway Best Pairs Cup also this season” – added the representatives of the organizer of SBPC."

The thing is, the BSPA are only concerned with league racing in the UK. As long as Percy Pensioner walks in through the turnstiles at Belle Vue and Buxton, then the promoters are happy. Anything else that goes on in the world doesn't earn them any money so they don't care. If the BSPA/SCB wasn't committed by FIM obligations they would be even happier not to take part in the SWC as well.

 

The SCB run the sport in the country, and they delegate the running of league speedway to the BSPA. Maybe in reality it's the SCB that we need to moan about for not looking after our national interests? The fact that the people that sit round the SCB table are pretty much the same as the ones that sit around the BSPA table (give or take a few referees) does sort of blur the issue though, so no wonder everyone gets confused.

 

What really gets my back up is the fact that there are a couple of British riders who could be earning good money in the Best Pairs. The sort of prize money for winning just one round would do very nicely thank you. The fact will be that foreign riders will be earning that money, probably re-investing it in better equpment, making themselves more competitive, especially in the SGP's and SWC, therefore further relegating the British riders down the international pecking order. The downward spiral of the fortunes of British speedway has been further accelerated.

What is their reasoning behind the refusal?

 

Nothing more sophisticated than good old fashioned and very petty, "not invented here" and "what's in it for me"?

 

Some folk in the BSPA & SCB still think that Great Britain has an empire and that everything to do with speedway should revolve around this country. This is a tournament, like the SEC that's basically being run by Poles, out of Poland, and so, to the tune of "boo hoo, a-waahhh a-wahhh" the BSPA / SCB stamped their feet, turned their backs on One Sport (the promoters) and decided not to play with their train set.

 

Meanwhile, whilst the likes of the Turbo Twins, Greg Hancock etc etc were earning big money from this competition, (was it about £12,000 for a win?) the British World Champion, Tai Woffinden, was barred from taking part, just to show the Poles that they can't mess with the British authorities. Sadly it also meant that Woffy (and partner) didn't have the advantage of the extra income that from one meeting alone could have paid for a whole new bike, or more, as he strove to defend his crown last year.

Unfortunately the British authorities have a lot of support from the fans as well.Lost count of the discussions i have had on here with British fans who see the old UEM and now these new FIM Europe etc comps as 'mickey mouse' and taking riders away from league meetings.For a decade or so i have been defending Euro meetings and saying what a great opportunity they would be for Brits(especially the younger riders) to gain experience.Like i have mentioned before when i asked a team manager here why they never picked British riders for their team they answered "because they have no experience of our tracks".......

 

The one disappointment in all that time is the gap between the best countries and the others seems to have grown and i'd guess this new money being pumped in will only enlarge the gap.Despite all the Euro meetings in places like Miskolc,Gorican and Lonigo there is now real sign of a new Zagar,Pavlic etc and no-one from Belgium,Holland or Bulgaria on the scene.Czecho seem to be on the slide and even in Germany we have had a lack of new talent after the Smoli,Hefe Wölbert period.I tried to set Huckenbeck up with a British berth last season,but he wasn't interested........ Now it is Poland,Denmark,Russia and Australia and nothing much after that.Finland can't even get a team together nowadays and Hungary are far behind....

Anyone know how best to get to Landshut without the aid of a car ? Thanks.

 

There's a regular train service to Munich HBF if you are staying in the city. The train line runs close to the airport but there is no stop there.

 

Munich Airport to/from Munich city is a 40min S-Bahn ride.

 

The 317 bus does the route between Munich city and Landshut and DOES call in at the airport.

 

BTW - correct pronounciation for the town is akin to Lands-hoot - NOT Land-Shut

It's worth mentioning that the speedway stadium is a little bit out of town. There is a train stop (Gündlkofen) near enough to the track (30 minute walk).

Can understand the decision as have good crowd at Ostrow but does this mean that no Togliatti this year even though had said two year deal when sorted in 2014.

 

Also SEC has always said they are looking to spread speedway but have just going to established areas which is a bit disappointing

The host of round 3 still have not been announced.
