World Champion Crowning

SENIOR moment ... forgot I was on Polish time so 10 it is. Would agree about having final round in Oz for the next five years. Also think it is a gamble for them too.

 

is it a gamble on the attendance also ?

it would cost roughly 3k to go to this event from the UK. BSI must be counting on a lot of Australians travelling across the country to see this.

I don't think bsi need to count on anything - my understanding is that the local promoter will be the one bearing all the risk...

QUITE right and any attendees from Europe, and indeed New Zealand, will just be the icing on the cake.

 

The Etihad stadium owners believe that they can attract a viable audience on the back of the venue itself.

No more gamble then any other track.

The vast majority of the spectators at any GP are locals anyway so there isn't any difference between Australia and the European GPs.

Is there any difference then a few people from NZ or Sydney flying to Melbourne then a few Brits flying to Stockholm?

Distances are much bigger for the 'locals' in Australia than in any European country, and even NZ is 3-4 hours away by plane. In addition, whereas the majority of active speedway fans are in Europe and can travel relatively cheaply to several GPs, far fewer will be willing to travel Down Under.

Or you could take the interpretation that the stadium owners are desperate for business. For various reasons, the stadium is not popular with either teams or spectators, and has lost both its NRL and A-League tenants in recent years, with some or all of the AFL teams threatening to leave as well.

I know flight time from Auckland to Melbourne is approx 3,5 hours which is about 1 hour longer then a flight from Heathrow to Stockholm-Arlanda but

I don't think it really matters that much if the flights are 2,5 hours or 3,5 hours long and they do have low cost carriers down under just like we do.

 

The distance from Sydney to Melbourne by road is "just" 200km longer then the road distance from Stockholm to Copenhagen (and an additional 300km

to Vojens from CPH). Then MEL and SYD are each the same size as Stockholm and CPH together.

Yes, but Copenhagen has also been dropped because of poor crowds.

The size of population centres isn't highly relevant for speedway as its strongholds are often in rural or semi-rural areas. If they were, the likes London, Copenhagen and Warsaw would support regular speedway, and the German GPs at Gelsenkirchen and Berlin should have been successful.

 

I don't think Melbourne or Victoria has had much of a solo speedway scene for many years, so the GP is going to be heavily reliant on travelling and casual punters. With the latter category you might get people going out of curiosity once, but whether it's sustainable for the next four years is another matter.

 

The Sydney GP reportedly drew around 20,000 fans (although that was probably exaggerated) some years back, and that was an area with a reasonable active speedway scene at the time. I therefore wouldn't really expect anything more in Melbourne, although it'll be a good effort if they do better than that.

No its not, the Premier league is an ENGLISH league...the World Cup goes all over the World!!!!!!!!!!

 

F1 and Moto GP and Superbikes go all over the world, usually in the same order...Speedway needs to compete for world wide sponsorship or it will die.

I agree that it is good to take the GP to new locations around the world, it would be great to see one back in LA (and Wembley for that matter) but I think the GP is where it is because European fans have supported it. It just seems very unfair that for the next five years European fans will be denied the opportunity to see the Champion crowned.

 

I am not denying the Aussies or anyone the right to have the final GP, but it should be shared around a little more, surely that is only fair and right to fans?

They've never had a NRL team I think. The storm play out of another stadium in Melbourne.

The Storm now play at AAMI (sp?) Park, and previously at Olympic Park, but I think played for some years at what's now the Ethiad and until quite recently still played a number of matches there each season.
