Speedway Star - Can I Have My Money Back?

Recommended Posts

always worth a read, plenty of content that is relevant (even with t'internet to contend with) ...

as professionally presented, if not more so, as any sports magazine available....

in fact, the irony, sadly, is that the professional standard it delivers isn't reflected the same in the sport it covers.....

If the magazine reflected the way the sport was run you would be purchasing an old copy of the Star with a photocopied insert. The mag would be damp from being left out in the rain and have plenty of "guest" columnists. It would cost fifteen quid for about fifteen minutes reading.

As a regular subscriber of the SS mag, I think this morning's publication ranks with any this years. The article on Guests and the in depth interview with Larry Ross were first class. Hope we get more of the same over the winter months.

Mildenhall, Didn't realise it was that long ago, remember going there to watch Mel Taylor and the place was heaving.... although it was a scant location it had a fantastic atmosphere..... Wonderful times....

THANKS for those comments ... and I speak as someone who had no input into this week's edition. And, yes, there will be more in-depth features in the weeks ahead and throughout the winter and probably going on through the summer

Some great stuff in this week's issue. Especially liked the various knowledgeable views on guests, getting some top riders back and the fast track system.

Jon Cook is always good for an overview although I don't agree with his comment (aimed at Rosco) that it was only at Swindon that we saw 'strung-out' reserves! There was a distinct gap in abilities between most of the Grade A reserves and the rest - and that needs to be addressed rather than left as it is!!

PS. Not sure what the SS has to do to attract new younger readers, assuming that is one of its objectives - but long features on old (forgotten?) riders is not going to hit the right note in either the printed or the online version.

TAKE your point but it is also about hanging on to the ones we have and nostalgic features always seem to go down well.

how many of those pages are adverts? Most households have computers so they have a huge potential market.Speedway Star has a potential 'audience' of 30-35,000.I think its a great magazine.

10 pages in pc mag about 5 in SS

It might have a potentially bigger market but there are many more pc mags on the market for it to compete against

SS has no competition

in the shop where its sold there are roughly the same amount of copies on the shelf of both mags so carnt see how one out sells the other by a huge amount

Usually I get 2 to 3 hours enjoyment from the SS mag at £2.90 . Compare that to the £15 it cost to watch half hour of racing, I say the magazine is really good value....

I don't suppose they're many youngster's buying the mag, they would rather spend their money in downloads and such. If they were to read it, then no doubt their parents would have brought it any way. To aim the mag at that age group would be a detrimental development.

As for the long feature on Larry Ross, it was an inspired interview and one I thoroughly enjoyed. You may have forgotten him, but us old ones remember all the great riders. Larry was not only a seasoned international but someone who gave his all, never let anyone down and appreciated everything that British Speedway did for him. What a pity they're are not more like him today.......

Youngsters don't need to buy the printed version - they can get access to the online version. But as we know with all aspects of modernday speedway (apart from the riders) nobody embraces social and electronic media to any great beneficial effect.

I have no issue with the Larry Ross interview other than it wouldn't interest a certain age group.

For me a front page splash headline of Martin Vaculik calling Nicki Pedersen 'the most dirty rider in the world and an actor' plus a tagline of Jon Cook's pre-AGM thoughts might raise a few more views amongst the (ever-increasing number of) casual speedway followers?!

Still a good read though and I do still get it on subscription. :t:

OK, we'll get a guest instead.

I was away from Speedway during the Ross era, but despite that I thought this article was one of the best reads in the SS for a long time. Decent article about Guests, but some will have read it, forgot it and be bleating on here about why we have them within a fortnight.

THANKS ... our potential market has diminished significantly in recent years and especially over the past 12 months. And, of course, we have to live alongside the internet.

It's not easy and you will find over the next few months that the balance in content between news and features will favour the latter more strongly.

Think it has to Mr Rising, a weekly cant compete with the internet with local news, and only ever had a small chance against the local rag, many of these papers are going weekly anyway.

Although Larry Ross was really a bit before my time, I thought it was a good read. Only concern is that it's somewhat encroaching on the territory of Backtrack, when the Spar should really be more about the here-and-now, but let's not put a dampener on what was a good issue (what with Arnie G's guest analysis as well).
