Halifaxtiger
What has really gone wrong with the Club? Won the PL league, Won the NL, made playoffs, track of the year many times, always a competaive team and paid the bills!!! Not a great deal wrong with that record i dont think Problem is alot of the time is folk contiually puliing the club[not just Scunny, speedway clubs in general] down Nothing wrong on track, clearly (and I would be the first to agree with that). What June refers to, though, is off track. I have little reason to doubt what she's saying and, as such, she makes a very good point. Now more than ever, promotions up and down the country should EMBRACE their supporters, make them feel part of the their club. Too many fans fallen by the wayside because of ill feeling or whatever. Its these we need to win back, we can't afford to lose anymore. Dead right. Sometimes I think that some promotions regard supporters as a necessary evil to be tolerated but not embraced. Guest WTF1
You got the point Montie! I now consider myself having been told off!!! ......The promotion, the track the racing & riders are all very good and Rob is brill with the mike. You keep making your suggestions and ideas "June" and others on this forum and don't be put off by the odd person who tells you off, we aren't putting down or slagging off Scunthorpe speedway but hopefully giving constructive ideas which is a guide to bringing in more punters , better that than an epitaph a few years down the line of "Well at least we won the PL NL and had the best track"

I fail to see to be honest what else RG and the promotion can do to put punters through the gate Press and Practice wont make a rats ass different to the crowds, its a waste of time---what you need is an open day, your average newby doesnt give two hoots about a press day---but it it was an open day folk may just come for a look PA system----put 3k in and you will get a new PA sysem--simple Lights to fill a program in??? ive never struggled to be honest!! It is the best race track in the country, Mr Godfrey is one of the best presenters and there are as few delays as possible. That's what people want. I have never had a problem with the PA system at EWR or completing my programme either. There's an awful lot that Rob Godfrey and Scunthorpe can teach a few other tracks. What June is saying, though, is that the connection with paying customers isn't as good as it was. She's saying that the return of the days when there was interaction between the promotion, the riders and fans has almost gone and bringing them back might help. That's not knocking the club, its trying to help (and you're right, Scunthorpe are not the only ones to whom it applies). There are a lot on here who have all the ideas in the world about bringing fans back, but her point is one of the best and most practical I have seen. Moreover, it doesn't cost a penny. Surely its got to be worth considering ? Edited January 8, 2015 by Halifaxtiger
June
Montie, Yes winning the N/L twice & the P/L league was absolutely brilliant and we all know that. Everyone of us know we have the best men working on our track and of course we all know the racing is better than at most other tracks. must be because we've helped produce a "World Champion" His 2 years racing for Scunny gave him a good start, including all the extra practise time. Hopefully Tai will win the title back next year. There are many other occasions when the fans of Scorpions & riders have had good times. Like the first function at the Baths Hall. A very successful evening when riders and fans mixed enjoying the evening dancing, joking and laughing . a great night. The Pig Roast held at the track, another good day enjoyed by all riders and fans. The nights at the bowling Alley with riders and fans, again successful. Social evenings at the Polish club. Quizzes at our own track club. Horse racing night at our club. All this helped create a good atmosphere with fans and riders on friendly terms. Being a fan of speedway since the mid seventies. I know what its like to lose speedway. Quibell Park, our family was heart broken to learn it was to be closed down. The council gave us another home at Ashbyville years later, but it happened again. we lost that track. Yet again the council gave us another home EWR, something like 20 years later. Its thanks to Rob Godfrey that we enjoyed all the above mentioned and some of the best racing. For my grandsons sake I sincerely hope that this doesn't happen again. He would be devastated as he is obsessed with the sport. Good luck I hope to see speedway continue in Scunny!!!

All these events you speak about are needed yes,but im sure they were all organised by a supporters club, not the club directly Where is that club,? do we have one? You cant expect RG and Gail to spend anymore time [or money] organising this type of thing, there simply isnt enough hours in a day to do it Most of the work done as Scunny, and other clubs is done for no reward and sheer love of the club/sport, everything from familys putting over seas rider up,sponsoring, meeting compnays to bring in income etc all done out of good will The club needs a functioning supporters club, with decent folk running it to set up these events, Paul Duff is the perfect man for the job but like the rest of us has family and full time job to work around---its not easy, but it needs to be done One last thing is the connection between the riders and the supporters,to my eyes there is one big difference to the old days, National League and Premier League, wether it right or wrong,Premier riders are a little different to a group of kids that we had in the NL Take Klindt for example, how many of the fans met him, very few i guess, but he is the most approachable rider ive ever met,a genuine lovely guy,but he was riding in many leagues and after most meetings was legging it to catch a plane, fix his bikes or to see his young family David Howe is another, will take to anyone,no drama..but alot of time was is riding else where the following day, many in France,so again would have to get away quick after meeting, also again a young family to spend time with. Compare that to the NL boys of old, daft a brush,no other commitments, single, like a drink etc..easy to mix with fans as a NL rider once said to me---"to get a woman here, all you need is a set of kevlars and an average", after walking about of bar later was heard saying " if she fits in the van i`ll do her" Brilliant Different riders now!!! On a serious note things are being done to help the situation!!!

On a serious note things are being done to help the situation!!! Not sure a supporters club does exist anymore...there was one resurrected in the early days of the Scorpions, I myself served on the committee. We certainly wasn't embraced by the promotion at the time. I remember sat in a committee meeting in the presence of the then joint promoter Norman Beany.....he couldn't of made it more obvious that we wasn't really wanted. He was livid at the thought of us making our own badges to raise funds, not that it was his decision to make. I resigned shortly afterwards. Others carried on, some left, other people joined...sadly it faded, probably beaten into submission. Not sure it exists any more. It is heartening however to hear you say one is now needed The supporters club always used to fund its own functions (end of season do's / trophys etc), as far as I know, the promotion didn't pay for any of that.... no one expected them to....except for the odd year they ran their own do. Every little bit helps, especially in the situation we find ourselves in. If a new supporters club (call it what you want) is set up, perhaps it could help in many little ways. The Sting Fund group runs the raffle but does it do anything else?, yes it did run some functions a few years back, very good ones at that. Maybe Sting could be expanded to incorporate a supporters club? A group which could assist and help the promotion in whatever tasks deemed appropriate, not necessarily just raising money. Most supporters aren't that naive, they realise some of the financial burdens promoters have....if they can raise a few bob and help in any little way, it can only be good. Just need people to support it. For me, David Howe is the perfect captain. He is in touch with the supporters...as is his wife and daughter, everyone has time for them and vice versa. Hopefully he can get the boys gelled and build a team spirit both on and off the track. I have no doubt that Rob, Gail..Montie, Paul , David Howe and others have a few ideas on where the club is heading...hopefully with some assistance from the supporters we can look forward to a good season and beyond. I'd just urge any Scunny supporter that is willing to help attends the meeting on Tuesday. Together we can do some good.
EC Rides Again
as a NL rider once said to me---"to get a woman here, all you need is a set of kevlars and an average", after walking about of bar later was heard saying " if she fits in the van i`ll do her" Brilliant I don't want to sound all PC, but I think that in the light of the recent events at Oldham Athletic and a certain footballer using the word "Brilliant" isn't really appropriate when added to this anecdote. Paul Johnson
What i would like to see is the return of race night filming, couldnt the media studies students from either colleges or schools do it? would do their course work the no end of good and make a few quid too...people keep mentioning how friendly and approachable the riders are,,do people know they can go in the pits before a meeting and say hello? i personally stand next to the pit gate looking in and watching whos there etc, but loads of times people have said to me " is it ok for me to go in"?, when they do they seem made up,Maybe we could do an Asda and have a Meet and Greeter to stand near the programme window to welcome everyone and assist in anyway they can, answer queries and give directions etc, make people feel welcome, maybe a retired person with a persona about them. if people seem they cant approach Rob they could use him or her as a go between, give him ideas or what not, then when the racing starts he/she could walk around and ask if everyone is ok? do they need anything?Like June said. a Kenny type character the fans can relate too Edited January 10, 2015 by neck brace tony

Albert
There's loads of local village/county shows in early summer, Scunthorpe Speedway should be represented at these.....tell people who we are, what we are, where we are and when we ride. We've had stands at certain shows in the past, Julie with the aid of some of us supporters, and with the help and assistance of a few amateur riders have generally been well received.. But.. To do it proper and to make more of an impact, if we could get a team member or two, with bikes to answer all the techie things, have photos taken etc. Get some freebie give aways for kids, balloons or something... show them videos, show people what they've been missing. Give some free tickets out or give people chance to win tickets....if its hot, sell cold drinks, always a winner.
Paul Johnson
Ryan and Ellis would be living in Scunny so going to shows etc shouldnt be a problem, all the others would be too far away or working as in David.im sure some of us who volunteer at the amateur meetings would hand out flyers at the stall? Not sure where Nike is living but he would be a hit with the kids i bet!!!

duffyscouse
Noticed this over the weekend, and as I was directly linked I feel it my place to respond and offer. Sure there are some good and valid points - the free ones are mostly very good, I completely agree that we need a better bond between supporters and the riders, Montie is spot on with how approachable the guys are ! and honest with his admission some have to get away after a meeting so can be a little busy but ever willing to say hello. HOWEVER the pits are always accessible before a meeting - up to 30 mins before the first race I believe. Ample time to get the family in to see their favourite riders. Why not encourage the kids to get back into autograph books - I used to love it collecting autographs - or, as stated, the cards to hand out could be a good and relatively cheap option The theme tunes for riders is a good idea, as is racing around after a win with a chequered flag Daft as it seems (and likely sexist) we have to market the product - chiefly, young fit men racing bikes (What lady can resist) Get them to the local college for an open day - take a bike to wow the lads, take a rider or two to wow the ladies I agree that we need to resurrect the off track functions, I can speak on behalf of the STING fund that costs are pretty much covered and there is usually a bit of profit (costs to cater, provide trophies, hire venues, discos, bands etc.) I have to be honest though - it is unbelievably difficult to find time mid season, with the unpredictability of weather (outdoor events) and the ever changing race calendar - you won't believe the headaches involved in trying to get a night the riders can attend and there not be a clash of dates with a fixture ........ Im more than happy to take a role, but honestly, it needs a good few ]people involved (many hands make light work) - I'll do almost anything to support the club, but my time is not infinte, unfortunately. Perhaps the meeting we have planned will see some fruits born. Unfortunately I am at work for the Warren meeting We must do what we can to make it a go-er, the thought of no speedway is one I dont want to come to realisation. Promo, by us the fans is a must Paul
thebaron
Not sure what happened on this thread yesterday; but thank Mod for sorting it. See my post on rider "backing tracks" has taken the chop. If it was anything to do with posting those URL's to YouTube clips; then I most humbly apologise. But if anyone is interested the tracks were SOUND TRACK FOR THE SCORPIONS 2015 David - Rocket by Def Leppard - I referred last season to David's bike being "The Rocket" Ryan - Land Down Under by Men At Work - has become Ryan's signature tune at the EWR. Wilko - Going Back Home by Roger Daltry & Wilko Johnson - seems appropriate; as Wilko goes home again to the EWR for 2015 Nike - The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum - Fun Boy Three - Lunna is very very marketable and this is magic Ellis - New Sensation by INXS - keeping with Aussie Bands ...Ellis the new sensation Alex - Thunderstruck by AC/DC - again sticking with the Aussie Bands - Alex "The Thunder" Davies. Josh - I had gone for Atomic by Blondie (but this may be a tad slow). Then I heard Automatic by Niki Minaj - very "catchy"(by the way there is also a "male version" of the track as well as the Minaj version). But it is one that gets into your head. But I also heard Automatic by Tokio Hotel which is a great track. Anywhich way it has to be something with Auto in the title I think. I won't post the URL's for the tracks on YouTube just in case it did cause a problem on the thread. But YouTube them yourself; have a listen and see what you think. You may have your own ideas or indeed the riders themselves may have. We used to do this at Bradford; where the "backing tracks" were soon associated with the riders when they won a heat or were introduced to the crowd. I recall Gary Havelock choosing his track - The Dominator; Joe Screen - Cotton Eye Joe; Sean Wilson - Little Willy by Sweet; but the best was Jimmy Nilsen - Jimmy Jimmy by the Undertones. Realise this is a small thing; but it is an idea worth putting forward to help market the Scorpions riders to the public. Hoping the support turn out in good numbers tomorrow evening and it proves helpful to the club going forward. Noticed this over the weekend, and as I was directly linked I feel it my place to respond and offer.
