OveFundinFan
Surprised Hans Nielson not showing up in the 80's And nice to see Igor Plechanov rating well for the 70's. He didnt ride in UK too much, and the tricky Wembley track he got a hang of it real quick. Nice personality and still probably rates as the best Russian rider to grace a speedway track. 60's 1. Fundin 2. Briggs 3. Moore 4. Craven 5. knuttson 6. Mauger 70's 1.Mauger 2. Olsen 3. Collins. 4. Michanek. 5. Simmons 6. Jessup 80' Fallen away from speedway in the 80's and didnt keep my eye on things closely but up there would be Hans Nielson, Gunderson, Penhall

van wolfswinkel
For me started following speedway in '63 Ove Fundin was the greatest closely followed by Briggo, Mauger and Olsen late 60s, early 70s. Lost interest for about 30 years with Rickardsson, Crump, being the best in the last 10 years. Remember Briggo saying Martin Ashby was once the greatest rider in the world but didn't believe in his own ability!

waiheke1
No Moore? maybe in the 50s eh,a shoe in for me a legend.Oversight, slot him into 4 behind the other two kiwis.Would top my list for the 50s I took 1970/80 to mean 1970-1980, not 70s and 80s, which is why none of us chose Hans Nielsen.Exactly, everyone would have had hans penhall and eric on their list if it was 70s and 80s I suspect.
norbold
1950s is interesting. I think the top 5 in no particular order would undoubtedly be Jack Young, Ronnie Moore, Ove Fundin, Barry Briggs, Peter Craven. It's the putting them in order that's the problem!!! stratton
I think going by some of the riding records i have Craven had a good record against Fundin, my uncle said Fundin often hugged the line.
Guest
Can one actually designate "All Time Greats" into 10 year eras - as has happened in previous Posts - or should such findings cover all the major stars from the recognised start of speedway in Australia circa 1923? I think there was a list of 'All Time Greats' in the now long defunct 'Vintage Speedway Magazine' at least 10 years ago.

Same for 'BackTrack' and 'Classic Speedway'. Great reads - all of them.

And some great riders and racing! As the old saying goes "...them wuz the days....{
waiheke1
If we were to add the 80s to the discussion: I'll go: 1 nielsen 2 penhall 3 gundersen 4 lee 5 carter 6 s moran Though maybe jan o should make the six.

Did either of you see Vic Duggan at his peerless best? And I have a friend who I know will extoll - and rightly so - the merits of Tommy Farndon. norbold
And I have a friend who I know will extoll - and rightly so - the merits of Tommy Farndon. Who's that then, Gustix? Personally, I don't think Briggo was the greatest of his time, let alone all time. I was at my most active as a speedway supporter in the 60s and early 70s and I'd say, as someone who was there, that without a doubt Ove Fundin was the greatest rider of the period, if not all time. But it's all a matter of opinion of course and I could name at least a dozen riders who have a claim to greatest of all time: Vic Huxley, Tom Farndon, Bluey Wilkinson, Jack Parker, Vic Duggan, Jack Young, Ronnie Moore, Ove Fundin, Barry Briggs, Ivan Mauger, Hans Nielsen, Tony Rickardsson......
