I agree OM - I hope strong sanctions are taken against Jim Lawrence for his total mishandling of the situation.

From the sound of things, the situation would have been better handled by a ref like Dave "chuck em out" Robinson. ;)

On this occasion I have to agree with Hamish McRaker, I think Dave Robinson would have handled it better and avoided the incident that followed. Didn't think I would ever say that!

Another thing I would like to see again on the video is when the red lights actually came on. I didn't have a good view of the clash between the two of them on the home straight but my intial reaction was that the red lights came on later as a reaction to the bike being parked across the track rather than the clash itself. Still I guess strictly speaking you don't need to stop the race to exclude someone and the white exclusion light may have been switched on earlier.

Could anyone confirm that?

The YELLOW (Nathan Greaves) exclusion light definitely came on during the race although I cannot say for sure at what stage the race was actually stopped.

The situation could have been even worse with a Moron like robinson , the bloke should not be allowed to ref at all let alone an important one like this was ,

The sport needs controversial incidents like this every now and again.. As it generates reaction .. It proves it when this topic now stands at 6 pages.. Not many threads in this section have that many pages

It's small fry in comparison to a BSF debate elsewhere about Darcy Ward.

Thanks for confirming that Gambo.

Yes it was the Yellow light. Whoops! It would have been a bit harsh on Cleggy to exclude him from a race he'd already been excluded from. Whoever came up with that 15 metre nonsense anyway.

No criticism to the Ref for any delays with the exclusion then.

Cheers.

It dosent matter who was to blame just fine the riders and move on. They shook hands tonight so obviously they are over it. What happened off the track just get them to shake hands and move on. It should stay within speedway, we dont need anybody else involved (police etc) because if that happens we all will suffer in the future .health and safety is already poking its ugly head into speedway and we dont need it

Nathan Greaves

The majority of you will know what happened at Coventry on Friday. I've seen a number of different things on social media this weekend and just felt I should let everyone know how I feel about what happened. After this statement, I don't really want to have to comment on it further unless I really have to. I've got some important meetings coming up in the next few days and I want to be fully focused on those matches. Nathan Greaves Statement- 28th September 2014

Nathan Greaves has released the following statement in regards to Heat 10 and the events that followed during the Cradley Heathens’ National League Knockout Cup Semi-Final 2nd leg against the Coventry Storm on Friday 26th September 2014.

“It all started before the heat at the tapes when James (Sarjeant) wanted to be on the very outside of gate one and I wanted to be on the very inside of gate two.

“We were both slightly in each others starting gate but the start marshal kept telling me to move and said that James was fine where he was- even though his handlebar was over the line.

“So I stood my ground and kept pointing out that if I’d got to move over then so had James.

“The start marshal wasn’t interested though and said I’d got to move over otherwise I’d be disqualified for delaying the start.

“At this point, even though I didn’t agree with him, I had no choice but to move over.

“We made an equal gate but I outmuscled him to the first corner and led for the first few laps.

“Coming down the home straight, he tried to pass me and obviously tried a late switch of line, caught my back wheel and pulled up.

“He then just parked it in the middle of bends one and two and the referee had no choice but to put the red lights on.

“At first I was ok because I thought it was going to be awarded and I thought I was going to get the win.

“But then my exclusion light came on and I was going to go back to the pits to ask the ref to explain his decision.

“What confused me was the fact that the ref allowed the race to continue and only decided to put the red lights on when James had parked his bike in protest.

“If the referee thought my racing was dangerous, then why not instantly stop the race and put the exclusion light on as soon as there was contact?

“As I was on my way round, James came over to me and started having a go at me saying I’d turned left on him.

“He came right up to me and leant his helmet into mine and I did the natural thing which was to try and push him away from me.

“Then he said something which I didn’t quite hear, kicked my bike and started riding back to the pits.

“I wasn’t happy with what he’d done so I started running back to the pits to ask him why he’d done what he had.

“As we were heading down the path to the pits he sent my dad flying to the ground.

“We were more shocked with this than anything because my dad did James a favour a few months ago by helping him out in the pits for a meeting when his normal mechanic was ill.

“Shortly after he’d rode into my dad, people suddenly came out of nowhere and a fair few people got involved.

“The next thing I knew, someone had got their hands right around my neck and I could barely move.

“I managed to shrug this person off and a couple of the boys took me back to the pits to help me calm down.

“After a few minutes I heard that someone who’d got involved had been hurt so I started to make my way back down the path to see if they were alright.

“As I was part way down there, a member of the Coventry management made a remark about my dad which I obviously wasn’t too happy about.

“As I was asking him what he meant by what he said, someone in the crowd shouted something horrible to me and that was when I jumped the fence and went into the crowd.

“At this point I was starting to get pretty wound up again and I just wanted whoever it was who shouted to say it to my face.

“The whole experience wasn’t nice at all and it’s still not very nice to think about it now.

“Since my speedway career began I’ve always aspired to be like Greg Hancock in every way possible- not only to be a top class rider like he has been, but also to be liked by as many people as possible.

“After this incident, especially with some of the messages I’ve received, I feel like I’ve made a few enemies and it’s not a nice feeling.

“This whole experience will hopefully benefit me in a good way later on in my career.

“In the heat of the moment and when the adrenaline is running, things do happen every now and again.

“But hopefully I will learn from this and if any similar incidents do happen in the future, then I won’t retaliate- I shall just let the other rider do what he’s got to and sort it out in a much more calm manner back in the pits.

“Even a few Coventry fans who were stood right by where it all kicked off have come up to me and agreed that I personally did very little wrong.

“I’d like to thank all the fans who have taken time out to send me messages of support and I’d also like to say a big thank you to all of the Cradley fans that were at Coventry who were there for me and helped calm me down.

“At the same time I’d also like to apologise to any fans who feel I have let them down. As most of you will know, this was totally out of character for me, but I just wasn’t happy with how James tried to handle the situation.

“I’d also like to say sorry to my younger fans and their parents as well. I never meant to scare or upset anyone when I made my way into the crowd and I really am sorry if that is how I made anyone feel.

“The incident between me and James has been reported by the referee and I know that the SCB are going to review it very soon.

“It could well end in a fine or maybe even a ban for myself- something which I would be very disappointed with.

“But as I’ve said, I’m still young, I’m still learning and I will definitely take a lot on board from this whole experience.

“Whatever does happen though, I will be back on the bike as soon as I can and will continue to do everything possible to make sure I keep progressing as quickly as I can to reach my ultimate goal of becoming a future British and World Speedway Champion.

The yellow exclusion light came on almost immediately following the clash on the home straight. The red lights came on a little later.

Good to see James and Nathan shaking hands tonight.
